The best conditioned athletes in the world, in their twenties and the best medical staff and trainers.
And the defense plays for some forty plays over three hours and each play lasts say twenty seconds average...that's forty times 20 / 60 seconds.
Or 13 minutes tops because I think the 20 seconds per play is high.
So 13 minutes over three hours and THEY HAVE TO BE ROTATED. No, assuming my math is decent, that's pretty wacky and testimony to how violent the sport is.
You have to rely on patient's description of symptoms and the symptoms are mostly things, such as headaches and lightheadedness, that can also be caused by anxiety, dehydration, and a number of other things.
There are physical signs of dehydration that register in the blood. So, Pugh may very well have had one. Also, if you have ever had a serious concussion, you know how much of a factor anxiety can be.
So, I don't know if this is a case where we can ding the Giants doctors.
Seriously? This is a lineman this isn't 160 pound desean Jackson getting destroyed going across the middle. Like others have said I wouldn't be surprised if he's out for an extended period. The Giants injury list over the years is truly something out of a movie - car accidents, spinal issues, gun shot wounds, fireworks accidents, the best group of wideouts they ever had all never the same after injury (nicks manningham smith cruz). You could write a novel off the injury issues with this franchise.
If I remember correctly, there were reports that he was in concussion protocol before the Patriots game. Then we heard he had an illness, and now its back to protocol?

Really bad concussions can force players out for most of a season and the worst even end careers...don't fool with them
I gather MMA plays a significant role in Pugh's training regimen... Â
...he might want to rethink that going forward. Absorbing repeated head trauma is to be avoided if you have a concussion history. The data surfacing on this issue is scary.

Even if he does MMA train, I doubt he's ACTUALLY fighting or taking blows to the head. Even Sparring, you don't do that. And there's lots of padding and gloves and head gear.
He'd have to literally be having MMA matches in his free time to be taking shots to the head.
Even well padded mild repetitive blows to the skull can have serious negative effects according to the latest science. When you factor in the contact he absorbs in the NFL and his concussion history he would be wise to avoid any unnecessary contact.
With Giants Medical Staff, Pugh's Going To Be The Guy On The Right Â
How bad this medical and training staff is. Yet nothing is done year after year, the same old cover-up and deny bullshit every year. I put this on the owners 100%, they are in the position to be able to evaluate it and correct it and choose to do nothing but tell us they have the best.
How many years in a row does it take to lead the league in games missed by players before they do anything, I don't think they will do anything no matter what happens, if they do then they admit they made a mistake, and it has become obvious that they choose to look good rather then correct the problem, and probably don't have a clue on how to correct it either, so just deny and do nothing, eventually they think it must change and yet it doesn't.
I am sick and tired of discussing this topic because It does not change a thing and only adds to our frustration. This will be the third year in a row we lead the league, so if by years end we are 28th, or if we do lead the league but then next season we finish 23rd, then they can say we are improving, isn't it a pleasant thought.
that the NYG medical staff is doing a bad job here? Any shred of proof other than some dude getting hurt. Thanks.
I think with beatty, beason, behre, cruz, fells, prince (2-4 weeks) and countless other examples, there is just a very low level of trust with the medical staff, both in terms of diagnosis and prognosis.
In the trenches, the hazards are less obvious but, perhaps, even more prevalent. Offensive linemen engage with an opponent on pretty much every play—when they don’t, it usually means they’re not doing their job.
“We’re backpedaling while someone is coming at us full speed,” Giants right tackle Justin Pugh says. “You use your technique, you try to use your hands as much as possible, but obviously the head gets put into that, and there is a lot of hand-slapping [against the helmet]. A lot of stuff goes on in the trenches you can’t get penalized for, and probably a lot of guys get hit or hurt.”
Must be bad to persist.
Damn. I hope he's OK.
Yes, they started with that same diagnosis on Beatty, Cruz, Beason and a few others as well...
another on the mark evaluation.
Dangerous. He would have played last Sunday if it werent for the bye.

I called BS on the Giants story when they first mentioned "illness" when the inactive list came out last Sunday.
Knowing our luck, he probably won't be on the field another game this season.

Concussions are bad news

I would be absolutely shocked if Pugh went at it like that. You can be into MMA training without full contact fighting.
Jay Glazer runs an MMA training program for NFL athletes, but they don't hit. It's physical fitness training, not full contact.
If the Giants discovered Pugh was fighting in his free time, I'd imagine that would be a contract issue.
