NGT: Jets Waive Quentin Coples

Old Dirty Beckham : 11/23/2015 12:06 pm
Doubt this guy passes through waivers.
Could make a decent 4-3 DE, no?

I wouldnt be against it.

He has to be better than Selvie.
He was a 4-3 de in

North Carolina I believe. Definitely a kick the tires kinda guy.
I don't know if it was a big surprise he got waived
jcn56 : 11/23/2015 12:14 pm : link
I remember reading awhile back that the number of snaps he was seeing kept diminishing, he was probably in Bowles' doghouse.
Reese is investigating...

I'd take a shot on him
dpinzow : 11/23/2015 12:15 pm : link
he's really a 4-3 DE playing completely out of position first in Rex's 3-4 and then in Bowles' 3-4

However Coples always had a questionable work ethic and committed some dumb penalties like Damontre does
Is he free to sign anywhere?

Have to admit that was the 1st thing I thought of too. If nothing else pick his brain and if it does not work out,get rid of him.
Aren't his issues effort based?
Jim in Forest Hills : 11/23/2015 1:06 pm : link
Its not a drug issue like Will Hill (who we knew could play). Physically he's likely more gifted than any DL that's not named JPP, but HUGE red flag that they outright released him. Don't want a guy that dogs it, TC would throw a fit.
He has to pass through waivers before he can sign with just anywhere
jlukes : 11/23/2015 1:06 pm : link
Both the Bill and Patriots are after us in the waiver order.

Teams before us that might look to claim him are

Colts
Redskins
Eagles
Raiders
Saints
Jaguars
Lions
Yet Another

Failed pick by Reese!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow
Jay on the Island : 11/23/2015 3:58 pm : link
very surprised by this. Definitely would be worth a look as I believe he is a much better 4-3 DE than a 3-4 OLB.

he was at his best as a defensive tackle in a 4-3 system...that said, who knows where he is at right now with his weight and strength.
I would give him a shot.

Can't be any worse than what we have out there now.

Please explain. How would he, who couldn't master their scheme, help relay the nuances?

You say the dumbest shit.
He will find a new team, but probably not via waivers.
Big Blue Blogger : 11/24/2015 3:27 am : link
With the Jets having exercised his 2016 option (salary of nearly $8MM guaranteed against injury), his contract is a significant obstacle to anyone claiming him.

Ironically, Coples would be more appealing if the Jets hadn't exercised his option last year. Not that a six-week-rental at $90K per week is a bargain for a player who doesn't know your defense - especially if he were switching from 3-4 to 4-3. But he might bolster a weak line for the remainder of 2015, and he would draw enough interest as a UFA to produce a decent 2017 comp pick. On the other hand, if the Jets had passed on the option, they probably wouldn't have waived him.
He could help us, but probably not this year
Bob in Newburgh : 11/24/2015 9:19 am : link
He is not a good LB, but that is what he body trained for this year.

Best position is LDE in a 4-3 playing at around 290. He is plus in a lot of facets in pass rushing, just not phenomenal in any thing. His combination of strength, quickness, and speed make him about a 10 sack guy in a great year, many of the coverage variety.
Terribly miscast at NYJ.
Section331 : 11/24/2015 12:55 pm : link
He's a DE, not a LB. BBB brings up a great point about the money owed, but he'd definitely be worth considering.
