Jets waive Coples

jlukes : 11/23/2015 12:06 pm
Never thought he fit in a 34 defense. Would love to give him a shot in a 43
he's a 4-3 imv
JonC : 11/23/2015 12:08 pm : link
.
Great pick
jeff57 : 11/23/2015 12:08 pm : link
Vernon Gholston II
I mean, he hasn't been awful.
Curtis in VA : 11/23/2015 12:13 pm : link
Hell yes.
There were questions
JonC : 11/23/2015 12:15 pm : link
regarding his character and maturity in the draft as well.
He mis def hasn't been a bad player
TyFromQueens : 11/23/2015 12:15 pm : link
Let's just get it out the way......

We should sign him!
4-3 DE
JonC : 11/23/2015 12:15 pm : link
.
Besides,
Curtis in VA : 11/23/2015 12:17 pm : link
its always great when we can take someone away from the Jets and make them productive.
Yes
spike : 11/23/2015 12:22 pm : link
I would give them a 7th rounder
He's got same issues as Moore
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 11/23/2015 12:24 pm : link
with dumb penalties.

You're gonna give them a 7th rounder for a player they waived? Brilliant!
He has all of his fingers

right?

Like Victor Cruz?

Hell yeah!
Exactly!
Curtis in VA : 11/23/2015 1:26 pm : link

Ehh I agree he's a 4-3 DE but...
Torrag : 11/23/2015 1:36 pm : link
...does this defense really need another undisciplined knucklehead drawing flags to extend drives? I'm not sold that his upside is worth the baggage that comes with him.

Can he rush the passer? Better than Moore?
What do we have to lose?
Giants2012 : 11/23/2015 1:46 pm : link
He's a 4-3 DE.
The Giants lack
Emil : 11/23/2015 1:47 pm : link
a sufficient number of impact DEs that I would think they consider a claim. DE is a critical position in a 4-3 defense and Coples was always a poor fit in the 3-4. He might thrive at LDE in a 4-3.
I'd say he and Moore are fairly comparable results wise on the field
Torrag : 11/23/2015 1:47 pm : link
...
He'd need to go to the active roster though
jcn56 : 11/23/2015 1:47 pm : link
He seems like a guy who might benefit from a change of scenery, but who would we drop to pick him up even if he does make it to us or clear waivers? I don't think he's guaranteed to be any better than Selvie.

Just going by numbers, seems like there's upside here.

had 16.5 sacks in his first three seasons, including a career-best 6.5 last year.
Is the

waiver wire order off of last season (i.e. the draft order) or is it now off of current standings?
Couples is better than Moore
SGMen : 11/23/2015 1:53 pm : link
But he doesn't know our defense.

Barring injury I don't see us pursuing him.
I'm sure the tires are getting kicked.

He doesn't know any defense though, more than likely.
Actually if you compare snaps played to production...
Torrag : 11/23/2015 1:56 pm : link
...of tackles and sacks their results are eerily similar.
As is their high profile for drawing flags...
Torrag : 11/23/2015 1:57 pm : link
...
Moore is also better suited to 3-4 OLB
JonC : 11/23/2015 1:59 pm : link
Coples should be the better fit for NYG, but the off-field components must be vetted as he's been viewed as a problem child from UNC to the Jets.
Coples
stretch234 : 11/23/2015 2:04 pm : link
Coples was the 16th overall pick in 2012 - and people here bitch about a R 6th rd pick being a 'bust'

Sprechen Sie deutsch?
You know the Giants are asking Nicks
jlukes : 11/23/2015 2:31 pm : link
about Coples.
What is the risk in signing him right now?
Biteymax22 : 11/23/2015 2:43 pm : link
He may be better suited to a 4-3 and we are borderline desperate for pass rushers even with JPP returning. You could sign him at the veteran minimum for the rest of the year and cut bait the second you think things aren't working out.

If he would take a practice squad spot I would definitely jump at it.
No way this guy clears 20 teams...
trueblueinpw : 11/23/2015 3:14 pm : link
Doubt we'll even get a hack at the guy. But if we did, its unusual for the Giants to gamble on guys with questionable character. Does anyone know what the problems were with him with the Jets?

No it's not.
You need to qualify said risks
JonC : 11/23/2015 3:24 pm : link
They've definitely been more strict in recent years.

Christian Peter is 10+ years ago, times have changed.
What character questions have we taken on?
trueblueinpw : 11/23/2015 3:33 pm : link
Not saying we haven't, but I can't think of anyone recently. Now my Jets friends are always quick to throw Christian Peters in my face, but yeah, that was a long time ago.

Stephan Hill, Coples and this guy Devin Smith all are poor. These are top pick misses. At least Reese hits on top picks.....

Will Hill. If the risk is low (eg not a first round pick or a FA with guaranteed money) then I think the Giants would take on a guy with character concerns if they felt he was basically beyond them.

Coples is virtually risk free right now. 2016 he has a big cap number (7+M) but it's 100% cuttable.

Coples
stretch234 : 11/23/2015 6:52 pm : link
His number for next year is 7M and it is injury number. if you sign him and he gets hurt this year, you are on the hook for that 7M. He most likely will not get signed this year with that. Same reason Skins will not play RGIII
He's likely to get claimed
DavidinBMNY : 11/23/2015 6:53 pm : link
Plenty of teams that are out of contention can afford to let him eat a roster spot and build to next year.
Why would anyone claim him???
Big Blue Blogger : 11/23/2015 8:16 pm : link
You pay him $100K a week in 2015 while he learns your defense. Then you get the exclusive right to overpay him next year. Unless you think he's worth close to $8MM on a on-year deal for 2016 (guaranteed for injury), all you're really getting is a big potential liability if he gets seriously hurt.
Sounds like a
