any recs?

Every single one breaks. I've tried the digital pen type....with the readout on one end and the little display on the other....they last about 2 months.

Then I tried the name brand one (looks like a little laptop) where you plug the probe into the side, you can set an alarm, min/max temps, etc etc....I just need to take a temp...I didn't need all the bells and whistles...that lasted about 1 year.

In frustration, I got one of the old fashioned mechanical types....the round face with a spring underneath the readout and a long single spike that protrudes from the center underneath....I used that one exactly once before it stopped reading accurately resulting in some tough pokk chops last night.

I don't care how much it is, I just want one that won't break.
Damn I wish i could remember the brand

I have a digital one, the needle folds out and that turns it on. It is real accurate and has been reliable, going on 3 years using it and I do use it often. I'll check back when I get home with the brand/model.
Thermapen

Thank me later. Nothing else compares. I use it almost daily, most accurate reading you can get.

I have the same problem
Deej : 11/23/2015 1:41 pm : link
Thermometers might as well be disposable in my kitchen.

All the review sites recommend the Thermapen but at $100 Im just too nervous to buy one and have it break like these things always do.

that's the one I have! lol It really is the best one I've owned to date.
I use a Taylor digital
RobCrossRiver56 : 11/23/2015 1:43 pm : link
Its about $15-20 from Target. I have used it countless times with the smoker and oven. Its has saved several meals and never broke. When cooking I now use 2, one to check the meat and the other to check the oven/smoker temp.

I got it as a gift.

I had no idea it was that much money. Worth every penny as far as I'm concerned.
You have to work hard to break a thermapen
jcn56 : 11/23/2015 1:43 pm : link
I've had one in my kitchen for over 10 years, and we use the thing a LOT.

There are knockoffs on Amazon (Lavatools makes a decent one, IIRC) - but they're not as good. Not as accurate, not as fast. If money isn't a concern, get the Thermapen.

I've been using the same model for over5 years. Had to replace it once after it got rained on when I left it outside after grilling. Otherwise it's been great.

I've had this one over 10 years
GentleGiant : 11/23/2015 2:20 pm : link
and still haven't changed the battery. I bought it back then because I heard it was the same brand issued to health inspectors.

Thanks!

Rob Cross - The Taylor is the one I had before this last one...the best I've had for sure, but still only lasted a year......
Bought my Thermapen from amazon about a decade ago...

Ditto: Thermopen

Ask Santa for it - its really expensive piece of equipment. But worth it - especially if you love a good steak.
I started baking recently

I wanted to take water temperature. I didn't want to spend more that $10 for a digital thermometer but bought a Lavatools @ $24.99 on Amazon. Instant read, accurate, works great. You open it and it instantly read the temperature.

this is the one that I have and its fantastic. I got it as a gift so I don't know if I would have dropped the $$$ on it myself, but if it ever does break I would probably do it again. had it almost 2 years without a problem. same battery too.
Go to the Thermapen website

Something must be in the air. My William Sonoma knockoff thermapen died last night while making yogurt, it's reading at least 20 degrees off. I wish I had just spent the $100 on a thermapen.
I bought a Lavatool

I even dropped it in the sink and didn't realize it and it was soaked. I thought it was a goner, but it dried out and is still working.
I have a couple knocking around the drawer

pretty basic types that are working ok, most recently for checking water temp for a Mexican cream not to >100% for a chipotle cream sauce for fish.

Received as gifts a couple of the fancy Williams Sonoma things that were supposedly remote reads--insert thermometer in the meat, inside the oven, carry the remote on your belt/in your pocket--could never get it to work, so appreciate this mention of the Thermopen when, not if, my dinosaurs give out. One has already partially melted lol
I was looking at our Williams Sonoma

I almost got this one, Weber

I'm pretty happy
Mike in Marin : 11/23/2015 10:22 pm : link
with this one so far, but I have only used in 10 times maybe. It is #1 rated on Amazon.

I also, have blown through a bunch of the other cheap ones that are just simple analog dials. Either the glass cracks or I leave it in the food on the grill accidentally and the glass/plastic lens melts.

If you leave a Thermapen exposed to heat, it's going to melt and be ruined just like the ones you have. It's a great device, but it's not immune to abuse.
just wanna say thanks to those of you who steered me towards
