NFT: ACC Hoops- Miami

HeftyLefty : 11/23/2015 5:00 pm
Been on this Miami train all off-season. This team looks for real. Just rolled through very good teams in the Puerto Rico Tournament starting wiht Ben Howland and Miss St, to Utah who was 16 in country with a lotto pick, and then Butler.

This team has some some great senior pieces in Angel Rodriguez, Sheldon and Tonye. Davon Reed and Newton great young pieces, transfer big men Ivan Cruz Uceda and Kamari Muprhy who was at Ok St and was a high end recruit.

They also secured 2 top 30 recruits last week and have a top 10 class for next year, Larranaga is ageless it seems and this can be 2013 all over again in the Gables.

ACC will be real fun with Duke, UNC, UVA and Miami and some real nice teams behind them.

Nice to see national writers such at Rothstein, Parish, Goodman, Davis, Gottlieb think so highly of the team also.

Should be fun.
Yeah they look

They were wildly inconsistent, largely because Angel Rodriguez was wildly inconsistent. Time will tell if things are different this year.
Last year UM beat Duke by 16 in Cameron & had a winning record in ACC

The same ACC that went 15-5 in the NCAA tournament. They had the same conference record as NC State who got in and won a game before losing to Louisville (also beat NC State head to head). If Rodriguez didn't hurt hist wrist and miss games down the stretch they probably would have had the better resume and gotten in, instead they went on to almost win the NIT.

The inconsistency last year was lack of cohesion & roster balance. Rodriguez/McClellan were both trying to be lead players in their first years after sitting out due to transfer and behind them they were extremely guard heavy so guys struggled to find roles - Reed, Newton, Lecomte and Burnett - the latter of 2 who have since transferred. At times it worked and at times roles got a little confused, like when Rodriguez hurt his wrist at the end of the season.

IMO this year's team is much more balanced, with guys in clearly defined roles, and possibly even more talented than than last year's. This team is much deeper than the Canes team with Larkin a few years ago, though maybe not quite as good from 3.
and sorry - ACC was 17-5 in NCAA tourney last year

highest winning % of any conference with every team advancing to the 2nd round, and the only team that didn't advance to the 3rd round got knocked out by another ACC team. Miami was the next team in from the ACC and I believe one of the last 4 out in the final bracketology, but don't remember.
Larranaga

is a very, very good coach and I think this is a talented Miami roster that will give teams fits all season long. With the emphasis on FOM this season ,Rodriguez should have a lot of fun slashing to the hoop.

I didn't see the games but it was a great week for Syracuse
Syracuse can really shoot it
BigBlueShock : 11/28/2015 8:00 am : link
They shot almost 50% from 3 in the tournament. They have 4 guys that can light it up from 3pt. land. Incredibly fun team to watch. They will have their games that nothing is falling and they will likely lose those games, but when the shots are falling, they will be a bitch to beat. The one problem they have is size on the front court. Coleman is the only space filler and he's constantly in foul trouble. They really need him to step up if they want to be a contender
