NFT: NYY: Cano wants out of Seattle

tbonfig : 11/23/2015 6:28 pm
....and back to NY?

Link - ( New Window )
IF they didn't want to pay for him for that long a couple of years ago
Matt M. : 11/23/2015 6:53 pm : link
why would they now? He can want out of Seattle all he wants, but Seattle has to find a trading partner willing to take on his contract. I have a feeling the length, as opposed to the annual salary, will the bigger issue.
Strait up for Elsbury

But they have to throw in and pay King Felix.
Hey, he made his bed

He is 33 and has 8 years left on his contract
DCOrange : 11/23/2015 6:58 pm : link
Not happening.

He blew it when he left. He would have been an all-time Yankee with all that comes with it. Instead he chased the money to a baseball wasteland. As much as I loved him, no sympathy.
Let the Mariners eat $50M or more
JonC : 11/23/2015 6:59 pm : link
and take Ellsbury.
From what I understand
old man : 11/23/2015 7:01 pm : link
Feelings mutual.
If he wants out why shouldn't he eat some money instead of the team?
steve in ky : 11/23/2015 7:03 pm : link

I don't think the player's union would sign off on it, steve
JonC : 11/23/2015 7:06 pm : link
similar to ARod to the Bosox in 2004.
Cano said he walk back to New York
Stan in LA : 11/23/2015 7:09 pm : link
Figures, he certainly wouldn't run...

That figures. A player can take an obscene amount of money and then basically emotionally/mentally bail on the team and they are left with no recourse.

The Choice Was Take The Most Money or...
Jim in Tampa : 11/23/2015 7:39 pm : link
Take less money and be happy in NY. He chose to take the most money.

Enjoy all the coffee and watching them throw that stupid fish around the market.
Did the yanks even offer cano a legit long term contract?
djm : 11/23/2015 7:44 pm : link
I don't remember
Don't Remember the Numbers...
Jim in Tampa : 11/23/2015 7:49 pm : link
But I believe the Yanks offered more per year, but for fewer years. The total $ offered was significantly less, but still enough for 10 lifetimes.
he could have been in New York
NoPeanutz : 11/23/2015 7:52 pm : link
where Jeter just gave up the game, leaving swaths of territory that could have been Cano's.
Instead he took the money to go to Seattle, where not even the QB can get laid.
The rumor was the Yankees offered
arniefez : 11/23/2015 7:55 pm : link
175 for 8 years. Cano is a fool. A rich fool but a fool.
The only way it would happen is
illmatic : 11/23/2015 8:00 pm : link
if Seattle accepted Ellsbury in return for Cano, paid some cash to the Yankees AND Ellsbury waived his no trade clause.

So yeah. It's not happening. lol
If memory serves the big difference was the 10 years
mfsd : 11/23/2015 8:03 pm : link
Cano wanted that, the Yanks said no. Thankfully

Would love to still have Cano at 2B right now, but not for $25 million a year until he's 40
Supposedly ...

This is the number one rule for your set
In order to survive, gotta learn to live with regrets
If through our travels we get separated, never forget
In order to survive, gotta learn to live with regrets

No answers to these trick questions, no time shit stressin'

Once it's too late, gotta learn to live with regrets

You used to hold me, told me that I was the best

Now he should have the integrity to try to earn it.

Sounds like the type who will mope and just collect it. He'll play the victim.
If this is true
Dave in PA : 11/24/2015 8:12 am : link
seattle is screwed and they should have known better about Cano's attitude and fortitude before handing him the franchise. Again, if true, it is embarrassesing for Cano to play the role of spoiled brat a whopping 2 years into a 10 year deal. Man the fuck up and try leading for once
as others have already said, why now if not 2 years ago?
Victor in CT : 11/24/2015 8:17 am : link
They were right not to give him 10 years. The last thing they need now is another A-Roid contract on their hands.

JonC mad a good point, SEA taking Ellsbury and kicks back $50 million is a good starting point, but even then, I can't see Cano being productive in his late 30s.

Good one. Never liked this kid. Hope he enjoys the Seattle weather at least.
Even if we had an 8/$175 offer on the table...
Dunedin81 : 11/24/2015 8:38 am : link
and I'm not sure that was ever confirmed, would you walk away from $65 mil? Goodwill? We don't need the guy back, don't get me wrong, but I certainly don't resent him for leaving.

Not that he's the end all, but Michael Kay has been saying for quite awhile that people that are connected to Cano have been telling him how miserable Cano is. Say what you want about Kay, he is fairly well connected, and he's been saying this long before this stuff came out the past few days.

You can randomly declare "rumor is BS and not true" all you want. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire...

He got a better offer somewhere else. I don't blame him for leaving.
Isn't Ellsbury from the Northwest and played at OSU?
Jim in Hoboken : 11/24/2015 12:14 pm : link
Cano + 65M for Ellsbury. Let's do it.

The CBA doesn't allow MLB contracts to be renegotiated and result in a loss of money.

Hell, even football contracts that are renegotiated don't really result in loss of money, or at least total value. Salary 9not guaranteed) is converted to bonus (guaranteed), allowing a team to reduce the annual cap hit (at least up front) by amortizing more of the money.

Nobody is really blaming him for leaving. But, nobody is going to have sympathy for someone that left and now decides it's a terrible situation. If I'm not mistaken, the Yankees offer was actually for more money annually, but for less years and thus less overall value. He was dead set on 10 years and went to a crappy team. this is what happens. I don't like when players bitch about situations like this when it was 100% their choice as a FA.

There are people who absolutely resent him for leaving. It's the very Philly approach where someone who makes an understandable business decision to part ways is a jerk because he didn't stay with the org. Cano didn't owe us anything, certainly not an estimated $65 mil discount.
he may have ran his mouth to his friend
