“Do you get emotionally angry after a game yesterday?” Cataldi asked Kelly. “Do you transmit that anger to your players?” “I don’t think you have to yell at grown men,” Kelly responded. “I think every single play in that locker room is as disappointed, or more disappointed, than anybody in this city in terms of how we played and what the outcome of this game was. So for someone to have yell at them or raise their voice, they’re not two year olds. They’re grown men. They know exactly what’s going on. That’s Harry High Schoolstuff. That doesn’t flow and that doesn’t work and that’s not what people talk about it. If that’s what people want, if people want a screamer and yeller, then let’s hire you ’cause you’re really good at it.” “I’m not sure I’d be worse than 4-6,” Cataldi said. |
Honestly I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if he goes back to college as soon as this season ends.
Angelo is probably a Giants' fan. He grew up in Connecticut and is a Yankee fan. I'm pretty sure they reference his sons as Giant fans on his show.

Where in the city do you live St. Jimmy?
That's the problem - these radio blowhards mistake themselves for actual football people. Even the 'draft analysts' we get around draft time would be lucky if they could ever hang in the NFL, let alone as GMs.
Cataldi wouldn't last 10 seconds as a coach.
Another "genius" who was supposed to reinvent the game bites the dust.

radio host thinking he wouldnt do worse than 4-6. 0-10. Guaranteed. NFL coaching is at an insane level right now.

You guys are taking this way too literally.

LOL, yeah there is no way the guy meant this seriously, it was a shot directed at Kelly and nothing more; and a pretty good one at that.

two of the best football weeks in Philadelphia since I moved there. Chip Kelly has gone from Chipachick to a guy who runs 5 plays and cannot evaluate talent. It is marvelous.

When Cruz blew his knee out in Philly, Kelly took time to go visit him in the hospital. He is okay in my book.
The reason I want Chip to fail and go back to college is simply that if that happens, the Eagles fail. And bigger picture, the Eagles ownership made a decision to back Chip and give him full power last year when it looked like he might go back to college. They gave him the keys. If Chip implodes, that sets Philly back at least 2 years. This thought makes me happy.
However, the point the guy on the radio was making was a simple and visceral one, and one which is big with the fans. IE- is your coach showing passion out there and is he as pissed as we are. If the coach isn't showing it on the sidelines, then they think he doesn't show it at all...and worse, doesn't care. He is equating caring and getting mad with wins. That's not the case. How many times did you see Tom Landry lose his shit on the sidelines? What about Bill Walsh? Even Belichick is pretty calm.
Years ago, Ray Handley got in hot water because (among other things) he said the following:
Essentially, Chip is saying the same thing here that Handley did. An NFL coach doesn't need to go crazy and yell on the sidelines or at the players. These guys are professionals and adults, this isn't high school or college. Handley believed that a coach was a teacher and put together game plans. Kelly actually had an advantage because the Reid team crashed and burned in 2011 and got worse in 2012. Handley took over a Super Bowl champion which was build for Parcells.
Remember this, Handley was at one time looked on as a top young coach by none other than George Young and Parcells. They both picked him over Belichick as the better man to lead the Giants as Parcells' successor. Kelly, somewhat similarly, has been looked on as a bright young coach. Coughlin wanted to bring him in on his staff years ago back when Kelly was at New Hampshire. Which leads to an interview I saw years ago with Steve Young. Young had taken over for Montana and he got heat from fans because he didn't win Super Bowls like Montana did. He got heat for how he looked like he didn't care (ie- didn't win). In a game in which the Eagles killed the Niners, something like 40-8 in Candlestick, Young was benched as the game got out of hand. They showed Young, throw his helmet and start yelling on the sidelines. Young said he was frustrated and did it because he was pissed. He had no idea that the cameras caught him and said he got a lot of positive feedback afterwords that so many people were happy because it showed "he cared as much as we do". And Young said it was at that moment he realized that perception was reality and he had to change some of his actions for the team and camera, even if he didn't feel that way.
What I see here is Kelly pulling a Handley. Not realizing that unless he wins, people will get on him and it will eat away his authority and result in him going back to college. Hopefully he doesn't have that Steve Young epiphany and get the fans and media back on his side by giving them what they want so he can help stabilize things and get hte Eagles back on track.
But we all know those two wins will be against the Giants.
I'll never look down on the Eagles or gloat about their failure while they continue to kick the Giants ass every year.
Don't know how the team agreed for Kelly to go on first thing Monday morning with a shit-stirrer like Cataldi. It just seems like bad PR to me.
I call bullshit. You wouldn't bet your mortgage.
He believed his own bullshit about Bradford. He thought that the Titans wanted him and he would flip him to get Mariotta. Remember the rumors that he was offered a #1 by Cleveland for Bradford? That was planted to try to hype up his value.
Essentially his whole plan was to get Mariotta and his plan B was hoping Bradford would click. He failed on both accounts.
Meanwhile, in that same stretch, we have had the same excellent QB and are 18-24.
If Chip Kelly is so bad, then we are doing a terrible job of exposing it.

The Giants not being able to beat the eagles does not mean the Eagles are going well. They gave away a second round draft pick for a broken quarterback. The BBI servers would be liquefying if this happened here. This place goes to shit if they dump an old 4th WR who can't even separate from coverage.

I'm pretty confident he would have done a better job with Mariota than Washington did with Bob.
But I acknowledge that Jackson, Mathis, McCoy and Maclin are a different story. That is definitely an elite group of players he lost for nothing.
This stuff is silly. The media doesn't run off coaches.

if you are trading barbs with a known loud mouth radio personality. If Chip keeps it up, he'll be packing his bags soon enough.

Depends on the ownership. If their coach is frustrated enough to lower himself to making snarky remarks to interviewers on live local radio and majority of fans and local media would all turn on him, for some owners it can be the straw in the canals back so to speak.

I doubt Chip is stupid. He won't get sucked in to that stuff.

All true, but there's a twist to all of it.
Most of that 24-18 came with Andy Reid's players, in a system that was completely new to the NFL. All we heard was how Chip was going to change the NFL with is offense and extensive playbook.
Fast forward to year three and Kelly is 5-9 in his last 14. And that extensive playbook....everyone is now saying that the Eagles offense only executes a handful of plays. More damaging.......no snap varying counts, no audibles. Complete predictability. On top of that, he's totally wrecking the team from a GM perspective.
The issue with beating the Eagles, from the Giants perspective is, we can't block them up front on either side of the ball. Lose the LOS, and you'll probably lose the game.
