I read it to be not just for one concert, but for a significant period of time. Which brings up a good point...like what would be the point of bringing back Jerry if he was just going to have a heart attack or OD the next day or week ? But let's set that aside and assume they would be around for a significant period of time.
love the Strummer idea, maybe John Bonham for a Zeppelin reunion, but to throw another name out there I'll say Kurt Cobain.
I wasn't a big Nirvana fan, but he was so young and just starting to peak.
I was just debating the Bonzo pick on FB. My response was "Really ? You're going to waste the pick on a drummer ? I would take Moon then, for entertainment value."
Yes...I thought of that one and a similar joke about "Bob Dylan before he went electric" but he's been too great (other than as a live vocal performer at times) then and since, so the joke would have worked a lot less.
Jim Croce. I think he would have been a superstar had he lived beyond 1973... Croce is one of those almost forgotten musicians from the 70's that went off stage much too quickly.
Syd is a poor choice because he was fried and lived for decades without any contributions. Why would he have anything to add now, given his mental state ?
Jim Croce. I think he would have been a superstar had he lived beyond 1973... Croce is one of those almost forgotten musicians from the 70's that went off stage much too quickly.

Moon would be awesome too and I named Bonham simply for a Zeppelin reunion, but they have to be in their 70's or close to it which brings up the wrinkle in this plan, some of these people would be really old if they weren't dead.
I would probably pick John Lennon, but only because I would have liked to see a Lennon/McCartney reunion. We would have needed to bring back two to have a Beatles reunion.
This is probably the best pick to benefit the most of mankind. I chose to be more selfish. If I had a while to consider and research it more, I would likely agree.
a few years ago, he's pretty good. But Zappa would have been amazing to see. Such an underated Guitar Player, and one of my top individual personalities in all of music. Talk about someone ahead of their time, love watching old interviews of him, especially against the FCC.

That would be Dweezil and his Zappa plays Zappa tour, great show but it's not Frank, on Halloween, in the Palladium. My first concert was Frank Zappa in the RPI field house in 1977. I was spoiled for life.
I also would have considered Hendrix. As someone else said, there's way too many great, talented musicians that died too young! I think the same can be said about comedians too! (John Belushi, etc)
no doubt...my first thought was Jimi but I was and am a big Harry Chapin fan...and of that kind of music...
Allow me to suggest Steve Goodman, under appreciated, never made it big ( he used to open for Steve Martin) but I respect him as I respect Zevon as a clever and witty songwriter and performer. Died much too young.
What he did while he was alive was absolutely fantastic. I can't begin to imagine what he could have done had he lived a long life. Marley was such a political force, his music was a call to revolution. He was the whole package.
Close behind Marley would be Hendrix. He just died too young and he was an amazing talent. One wonders what would have become of Joplin. I often think that Janis is the only woman who ever really sang true rock-n-roll. Tough to see her as an old bird rocking it out on stage.
I love Jerry - I will always listen to and love his music. He lived a long life, he played and recorded a lot of music. I miss him like he was an old and dear friend.
Well, since David Bowie is already picked and dead,
no doubt...my first thought was Jimi but I was and am a big Harry Chapin fan...and of that kind of music...
Allow me to suggest Steve Goodman, under appreciated, never made it big ( he used to open for Steve Martin) but I respect him as I respect Zevon as a clever and witty songwriter and performer. Died much too young.
He did write the perfect country and western song.

It was FOLK when Arlo did it ! Lol
Willie sang it well also. Not bad for a Jewish kid from Chicago.
I'd love to hear his perspective in these challenging times - but I've always been fascinated with how Jimi's career would have played out. Duane Allman is a close second.
Jim Croce. I think he would have been a superstar had he lived beyond 1973... Croce is one of those almost forgotten musicians from the 70's that went off stage much too quickly.
Jim Croce is a GREAT choice. His last album before he died was like a greatest hits album - so many GREAT songs. And, again .... he died when he was young - who knows what he would have came up with if he lived.
for picking someone who died young, at their suspected peak or before their expected peak. And also someone who wrote great songs, much so than a performer or even an amazing performer that was "just" a solid composer.
And that helps me see it as making a "selfish" choice, vs. a choice that would benefit the most people. So I picked Garcia for selfish reasons, but Mozart, especially since his influence would have altered music for several hundred years between then and now (and throughout all time going forward for what he would impact), is the kind of choice that is somewhat unimpeachable. Not that this needs to be anything other than a selfish exercise.
and had long, storied careers. Hendrix died young but also left his mark.
With that in mind I'll say Shannon Hoon or Bradley Noel. Hoon was such an underrated talent and Blind Melon would have gone down as one of the best bands of the 90s had he stuck around. He was an incredible writer and great front man, Change, Toes Across the Floor and Galaxy are great examples.
As for Noel, he *was* Sublime and he was gone just as they were about to turn a major corner with the self titled album. 40 oz's to Freedom is still one of the best albums of the 90s.
people are throwing out names left and right, each person has their own taste and that's great. I am just really baffled that so many criticize the Jerry GArcia choice. What is with the utter hatred that the mere mention of his name conjures among non fans???

Garcia is a real love him or hate him musician for the most part. Plus, people like to be douchenozzles ?
Was not very good before he died. Downhill quick after Brent passed. As much as he's one of my favorite musicians of all time, I would rather choose someone in his/her prime. See where they go.
Jimi is intriguing because he had plans to record with Miles. That would've been sick.

I hadn't mentioned anything about Garcia but I doubt people are critical because of any hatred. It's more likely they think that there is really nothing new he probably has to offer at this point even if given a second chance.

As a songwriter I think he was hitting a stride again. Days Between and So Many Roads were fantastic songs. But, compared with musicians who didn't show everything they had yet, I totally agree with you.
I'd probably have to go with Hendrix or Zappa personally.
He was so crazy he probably doesn't even realize he's dead. There is a reason why the members one day drove past his house to pick him up to go to a gig and decided to keep driving.
I'd go with John Lennon (whom I believe still had a lot to give)
Tops my list,....I saw him in the late 80's.
Johnny Winter...saw him in Santa Barbara early 80's he freakin ripped it up.
Albert King...I saw Albert King a few weeks before he died @ Kimball's east in Oakland, Ca.
who were already past their prime and did most of what they were going to do in music anyway? Not that's it's not sad they died.
I'm flabbergasted. Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix??
Kurt?
C'mon man....wasn't Jerry Garcia near death for years and like almost 70 when he died?
wow
Kurt Cobain was past his prime when he died???? did dave grohl's career end with nirvana?
you're misreading my intent (my fault). I was grouping Kurt in with the obvious choices to bring back instead of people like Jerry Garcia...Jimi Hendrix is an obvious choice, along with Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison
Simply because they had come out with a new sound, he was still young at 27 and I've always thought that the songs from LA Woman would have sounded GREAT live. The Changeling, Love Her Madly, LA Woman, The WASP and Riders on the Storm......are you kidding me???!!
as a musician, but my college roommate would start and end this conversation with Aaliyah. He was beyond infatuated with her and crushed when she died in the plane crash.
Such a shame they never got a chance to tour with those songs
who were already past their prime and did most of what they were going to do in music anyway? Not that's it's not sad they died.
So the older ones would just croak again pretty soon? Shit, this game is no fun then. Since we are talking about raising the dead, I thought they would be immortal.

Morrison was only 27, but his liver and heart were 92.

So the older ones would just croak again pretty soon? Shit, this game is no fun then. Since we are talking about raising the dead, I thought they would be immortal.
The point being that they pretty much had full careers....it's not like their creativity DIDNT reach its full potential because of an early death....I just don't get why somebody would want to bring somebody back when they already had a full career as opposed to somebody like Jimi Hendrix...makes no sense to me
Best flow ever for a popular mainstream rapper. That unique delivery/wit really gave him a one of a kind sound. Unlike most old school rappers, Biggies verses still sound great on modern beats because of that flow. I've heard all sorts of background music for Biggie, from his original smooth 90s BK sound to ridiculous electronic/trap beats of today... It always sounds good. His flow works on anything. Makes me think he would've found a way to adapt and stay relevant/good for longer than most.
But he's not a musician he's a rapper whine whine whine. Suck it. He was a musical talent who never had the time to put out a massive volume of music.
who were already past their prime and did most of what they were going to do in music anyway? Not that's it's not sad they died.

The way the OP is phrased though, there's no criteria for selections so it's basically asking who is your favorite dead musician. It doesn't say who would accomplish the most by returning or who would the world benefit most from by bringing them back.
Not that I disagree with that train of thought, I said Frank Zappa because I miss Frank Zappa not because as a genius and an innovator he would continue to break down barriers and continue to contribute and influence multiple types of music.
Maybe you should start your own thread and define the parameters as bringing back someone who would contribute the most, someone who died young and could have been immortal. It would probably cut down on the answers but it would be interesting discussion imo.
will always be my #1 choice. He was a guitar genius who was really just in the second inning of his musical career. Unlike some of the older guys that some of you have mentioned, there was so much more to see from Randy.
I would also add Jim Morrison to the list because he also died so young and essentially was before my time. Would like to have seen him.
Tony Iommi - The riff master. I have a bad feeling about him. I don't think he is doing well with his cancer. When that guy passes I am going to take it hard.
I'm not saying I don't love some of The Doors music (some is dogshit)
A few years ago, I decided to watch the movie Ian watched the night he died: Strozak (sp?). And listen to Iggy Pop's The Idiot, which is what he listened to. Fuck. Talk about depressing.
Frank Zappa...really miss that guy, musical brilliance and intelligence about life in general. He would have a field day with some of the buffoons that have lead us to where we are right now.
I agree, as long as you make believe that Steve Marriott never existed.
Damn forgot about Marriott, he was the real deal. He was so good that when the original zeppelin made inquiries about him, they threatened Page with a beating. Also some interesting mob ties (Sharon Osbourn's dad) to Humble Pie and Peter Frampton (Frampton comes alive) in which both acts were ripped off to the tune of millions.
inevitable post.
Great choice I did not consider and that has not seen on the FB choices yet.
inevitable post.
Damn you!

I considered Harrison seriously. I thought of Buddy Holly as well, but did not seriously consider.
I wasn't a big Nirvana fan, but he was so young and just starting to peak.
Fantastic choice. I give a lot more weight to songwriters than players.

Love the Buckley pick and considered it very seriously. Can you imagine the songs that might have come ?
For the same reason, I seriously considered Elliott Smith.
I think I stand by it though, but definitely in the other scenario, he was only 24.
Syd is a poor choice because he was fried and lived for decades without any contributions. Why would he have anything to add now, given his mental state ?
Not if would deny us listening to David Gilmour
Great f-ing choice I am ashamed to not have considered !
I can respect that choice.

Yep. Hadn't even hit his prime yet.

A back up sax player in a rock band ? Try harder !
So many died so young....
He was just so far ahead of everyone else. Arguably, rocks greatest guitarist ( along with Jimi and Peter Greene).
Ha same except other way around
I'd say Bon Scott but AC/DC didn't seem to miss a beat.
No Where Man : 2:22 pm : link : reply

Sadly there are far too many that fit the category.
No Where Man : 2:22 pm : link : reply
What can I say? I'm lazy.
Great choice kiddo, knowing I'll never see him perform "Watermelon in Easter Hay" live again makes me a poorer man.
There are several I'd bring back before Harry but I like the pick. Would also consider Jim Croce along the story teller train of thought.
Are we considering Keith Richards dead?
That would be Dweezil and his Zappa plays Zappa tour, great show but it's not Frank, on Halloween, in the Palladium. My first concert was Frank Zappa in the RPI field house in 1977. I was spoiled for life.
And Ozzy
That is a potato chip question though ... can't be just 1.
Anyway, I'll second Bon Scott.

Didn't even think of Duane .... EXCELLENT CHOICE.
The truth is out there. From what I read, she died of a heart attack. There was a ham sandwich on a bedside table, but it hadn't been eaten.
If not, Hendrix
In all seriousness, depending on the situation. To experience a concert or go back in time?
Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek
John Lennon and George Harrison
Frank Sinatra.
A lot of other considerations either did it to themselves, were monsters (Brian Jones), or died a little later in life (Bolan, Lennon).
Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix (even John Lennon) - the world lost a lot of good productive years and was rob of potentially GREAT music.
(I hate typing).
Allow me to suggest Steve Goodman, under appreciated, never made it big ( he used to open for Steve Martin) but I respect him as I respect Zevon as a clever and witty songwriter and performer. Died much too young.
The musician you offer up has to be of equal fame to musician you are saving.
And Go!
And give you David Bowie
Close behind Marley would be Hendrix. He just died too young and he was an amazing talent. One wonders what would have become of Joplin. I often think that Janis is the only woman who ever really sang true rock-n-roll. Tough to see her as an old bird rocking it out on stage.

I'll save John Bonham and send Phil Collins to Jesus ( he knows him)
I agree, so I guess we're asking
Do you feel like we do?

he may have looked 70, but he was only 53
I saw Alice Cooper a couple months ago at the Quick Trip. It's like a West Coast Wawa.
I was walking in and he was walking out with his family.
because he was 73 when he died!
If you bring him back, what more is he gonna do?
Bob Marley
Jimi Hendrix
John Lennon
George Harrison
I'd love the last two together and a reunited Beatles, but that's another story;
I didn't see that one coming.
Great choice!

Dude, relax.
...and just to throw another name out there who died way before his prime, Bradley Nowell.
it would be interesting to bring back someone who in their time was an innovator to see what they would do today.
It has already been done.
And that helps me see it as making a "selfish" choice, vs. a choice that would benefit the most people. My vote too. Get ready for Beethoven's 10th, performed by a full symphony orchestra augmented by some heavy metal rock bands.

I agree, as long as you make believe that Steve Marriott never existed.
Not sure I've ever been that amused, apalled and nostalgic hearing a band for the first time.
Check them out. But not if you don't like spandex, hairspray, parody and misogyny.

Absolutely thread worthy, you could title it "The He Man Woman Haters Club" and vote Spanky as president.
I just pictured an older Spanky in spandex, with the little beanie thing going on....that'll give me weird dreams tonight.
I would also add Jim Morrison to the list because he also died so young and essentially was before my time. Would like to have seen him.

Bissonette
and Starr
I'm not sure if they're doing Eat'em and Smile cover to cover, or will do more..eitherway, I'm sure they'll rock Shy Boy!
micheal jackson

Yes. I wonder what he wouldn't have sounded like during the post-bop period? He still would have been relatively young at that point.
shit.. I can hardly get my head around his music NOW..nevermind if he evolved more. Jeez
