Rock Newsday: Blackburn's advice to Nicks "know your role"

Defenderdawg : 11/24/2015 2:40 pm
"It was great for me to get back there and I'm sure Hakeem feels the same way getting another opportunity," Blackburn said. "He's going to play and do his role. Those are the guys the Giants bring back as much as anything, the guys who understand that their role is important and will do anything to help the team. I think Hakeem is the same way."

I don't really agree with his take on Jacobs and Ross

as good stories until they got on the field.

They weren't at the level they formerly were, but they both played well when they returned.
No....

references to the Rock? Tom "Rock" wrote an article with "Know your role"..
....and shut your mouth. Tom Rock says...
I don't think anybody is expecting to see the dominant

Hakeem Nicks that we saw in the playoffs in 2011.

But, I think he has a distinct role on this team. This team badly needs another outside receiver opposite Beckham. OBJ is the deep threat, so we don't need Hakeem to play that role, and I don't think his body would allow that anyway.

Seems motivated as well. I hope he's in a position to make a big play for us.
Actually,
Gman11 : 11/24/2015 3:01 pm : link
resigning Blackburn might not be a bad idea the way the Giants linebackers have played.

Blackburn III, the sequel to the sequel!
I don't think...
RC02XX : 11/24/2015 3:03 pm : link
We're expecting 100+ yards with 2 TD games from him. A couple of key redzone/goal line targets...and some 3rd down conversions would be great from Nicks. More along the line of 3-4 third down and redzone targets...for about 40-50 yards a game.
If Nicks can be to the Giants
GiantNatty : 11/24/2015 3:06 pm : link
what James Jones is to the Packers, that would be fantastic (and would get our minds off of James Jones).

Bull...James Jones will never leave out minds (or at least some posters' minds)...he will forever be another Jonas Seawright.

exactly - Nicks probably isn't running away from anyone at this point, but he still should be big enough to catch some 3rd down passes
Best case for Nicks is
AJ23 : 11/24/2015 3:15 pm : link
he plays a role similar to that of Amani Toomer or David Tyree during the 07 stretch.

I see similarities to that team in that we have a stud No. 1 (Plax/OBJ) and an up-and-comer 3 (Steve Smith/Dwayne Harris).

But there are questions when it comes to having "there when you need them" kind of players like Toomer and Tyree were during that stretch.

At WR, some would say Randle remains too game-to-game (even though I really like Randle as a No. 2). I like what I've seen recently out of Myles White, but he's unproven.

And unlike 07, you won't find any kind of consistency at TE - like we got a bit out of Boss in 07.

It's clear the Giants seek some more comfort at the WR position. And we had the spot open, so who better than a guy who has a history with Eli?
Obviously I should have mentioned
AJ23 : 11/24/2015 3:16 pm : link
that Vereen has definitely proven to be one "there when you need him" kind of guy.
Wow, um... Blackburn did not say 'know your role'

Defenderdawg, wth man?
At best I hope Nicks can provide what Toomer did at the end of his
Larry in Pencilvania : 11/24/2015 3:17 pm : link
Career...sure hands big body and dependable. At worst just someone as a body for practice. I don't expect him to do much, but it would be nice if he did
Should have dropped the quotes
Defenderdawg : 11/24/2015 3:31 pm : link
Although the meaning is roughly the same

"figured out in the first few weeks what my role was going to be and how we were going to play and be placed, what position, and I bought into that. Once I was there, it was no big deal."

"who understand that their role is important and will do anything to help the team. I think Hakeem is the same way.""
Chase is an inspiration.
Ira : 11/24/2015 4:13 pm : link
He's a guy who made the best of the talent that he had to help make football history. When Chase speaks, everyone should listen.
Yup, a David Tyree type of play would be good

Or a replay of the Hail Mary catch in the end zone would be good too.
Wait, the Giants only had a mild interest in bringing Blackburn back
Reese's Pieces : 11/24/2015 6:01 pm : link
in 2013?

Vacchiano:

Giants had mild interest in bringing Blackburn back at first, but only on a one-year, minimum salary deal. He got two years from Carolina.

Says here that he had pretty good season in 2012.

Led with 98 total tackles, tied for third in solo tackles.
Had 3 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 1 pick, 6 pass defenses and 3 tackles for a loss.

Reese and Coughlin thought they could let him go because of all the other talented linebackers on the roster?

I disagree. He is well rested coming back much like Blackburn did
Uninjured rested and will dominate

I watched him closely at Indy last year
Since Indy cut Hakeem they are lost
Not saying it's all Nicks but he reall demands you assign a lot of coverage and he is great in the red zone

I wish Tom would stop calling it the green zone
It's been an iron barrier since he started with that nonsense
Nicks looked good in preseason
mattlawson : 11/24/2015 8:16 pm : link
Surprised he never caught on with the Colts. Very James jones of them. And I'm surprised it took this long for us to sign him

Because Seawright went on to have a huge impact Yeah Jones hasnt helped the Packers win at all this year. And he was Beverly impactful as a player. Yup they are exactly the same. Great post.

Nicks did not have a good season with the Colts last year.
Reese's Pieces : 11/24/2015 9:39 pm : link
To Luck, Nicks was his Randle while TY Hilton and Reggie Wayne were his Cruz and Nicks. Nicks played in every game last year but was targeted only 70 times compared to 130 for Hilton and 116 for Wayne. Even tight end Coby Fleener was thrown to 91 times. By the end of the season rookie Donte Moncrief was taking more snaps than Nicks.

I don't know if Nicks was having trouble getting open or had some key drops, but since Luck was averaging almost 300 yards a game passing, it's not a surprise that he would stick with his vets.

Having Manning as his quarterback should make a big difference.

I am surprised and mildly disagree
grizz299 : 11/25/2015 2:20 am : link
I thought he was a dog his last season and a malcontent once Cruz got his money, Left under a cloud, threw Eli under the bus with remarks about Luck, failed with Luck, looks like he's completely lost it, doesn't know Macadoo's system.
All pointing to desperation and maybe the fact even that Randle is hurting worse than we know. Otherwise I don't get it.
Moncrief
Dragon : 11/25/2015 5:22 am : link
Is going to be a very good receiver if he can remain injury free which seems damn near impossible in today's NFL.
I don't think knowing the system is
Gman11 : 11/25/2015 10:54 am : link
as bad for a WR as it might be for other positions.

The route tree is the route tree.
Was Blackburn on the 2007 ...

Championship team? I forget.
Blackburn made that key interception in the 2012 Super Bowl.

Grabbing the ball in front of Gronkowski.

Oh, Chase - You could not beat out Keith Rivers for a roster spot in 2013? - ( New Window )
I watched Nicks a decent amount last season for the Colts.
Jimmy Googs : 11/25/2015 5:03 pm : link
His main issue is that he just ran short & medium routes and really was not getting any separation. Luck threw it to him when it was the convenient/safe toss because of the quality of defender on him.

Maybe his familiar surroundings will give him more of a boost this time...
