of mine from high school (34 years old) just died this morning because of cancer too. Cancer is a motherfucker.
Sry for your loss.
This year will be my11th year dressing up as Santa for Kids with (issues) cancer, etc at a Connecticut hospital. It's a wonderful experience yet i always need quite a bit of time alone when it's over.

You're a good man, Giants2012. The world is better off with people like you who give back and give of themselves. Well done.

I hear you 2012. Recently, because my myeloma doctor was situated in different part of hospital from cancer center, I had to pass by the pediatric cancer ward and see children going through this. It kills me to see innocent children going through. I could see it in some of their eyes as to what is happening to them.
I left my appointment that time and sat in my car for awhile just tearing up and having to gather myself from this.
It's a wonderful thing your are doing for those kids. I know it's hard on all.
My wife works in cancer treatment research. I tell her a great day would be when she doesn't have a job anymore because there is a cure for what she's researching (pancreatic). I don't think that day is anytime soon unfortunately.

but as this thread shows, there is still a long way to go. Our thoughts are with the Monk family and all those suffering similarly this holiday season.
there has been lots of progress, in lots of areas, as I understand them:
--Earlier detection
--Immunotherapy treatments
--Better matching between the specific type of cancer and the medication used to treat it.
--Use of viruses to attack cancers.
The challenge, as I understand it, is that cancers in any given part of the body are so biochemically diverse that a lot of different new treatments will be needed to make a very large dent in mortalities. Also, as in Monk's case, rapidly growing, aggressive cancers will be among the last to succumb.
So sorry to hear that, Nick.
Is it just me or is cancer treatment struck in neutral? Chemo is still the best option, or so I understand.
Condolences to anyone who has lost a loved one (my father died of cancer) to this terrible disease and RIP Quincy Monk.
Sry for your loss.
