NFT: NY Rangers Vs. Montreal Canadiens - 11/25 7 PM Game Thread

Huge early season meeting...

16-3-2, 1st in Metropolitan Division

v.

16-4-2, 1st in Atlantic Division

Let's try to continue my winning streak of 1.

Some fond recent memories. Rangers are currently incapable of losing. Not playing well and this is a good team. I will be realistic based on the recent struggles in games that the Rangers have had. Not going to be easy at all.

4-1 Rangers.

Still a loaded roster we go against tonight highlighted by Price/Pacioretty/Subhan/Galchenyuk. Eller/Deshamais/Markov aren't slouches either.

So 4-1 is what you deem realistic Seth? They shut us out in the first tilt of the season. You're the ZGiants of Rangers hockey..The ultimate homer. Nice pic of the hockey savant Zuccs.

Still, I'm feeling good about this game. Recent history shows we play them much better in the Garden than up North.

I can see the Rangers winning, but 8 - 0 would be a surprise. Montreal could lose big if they get down early, like they did to the Avalanche who are terrible.

Montreal's 3rd line is carrying the team. Desharnais, Wiese (who as much as I want to hate for his goofy looking face, he's playing well) and Fleischmann.

Rangers (like the Lightning) are one of the teams whose speed gives the Montreal D problems. Markov is almost 37 and Subban is not a defensive stalwart. that's their #1 pairing.

If Price is on his game he should keep it close (and he has come back from his injury pretty rusty). the Canadiens are without two top 6 forwards, one top D, and their biggest off-season addition and I just don't know if they have the roster depth to handle that.

Rangers are the least injured NHL team so far, if that keeps up they'll be tough to beat.

My prediction, close game, and a thread full of complaining about the refs, whining about Montreal diving, and a whole bunch of misguided testosterone.

I'll do my part.

NYR's defense has really struggled - and for a team with such great speed upfront, their D struggles with faster forwards (Girardi, Staal, and Boyle simply don't have the footspeed). The team's really struggled with the puck in the defensive zone - the Habs have enough speed to capitalize if those struggles continue. Should be a good game.

those aren't exactly bold predictions bud. The refs don't call penalties against teams that play the Rangers, the Canadiens dive like pros, and its better it's misguided testosterone than guided testosterone.

I really think the NHL needs to modify its playoff format. I'd have 3 teams from each division make it, fans do like the playoff rivalries -- but after the division winners, all teams including the wild card, are ranked based on points. So if the 3rd team in the division is worse than the WC team assigned to that division... the 3rd place team drops to 4th and would be away if they face the WC in a later round.

And i'm assuming MTL will end up facing NYI or Pitt in round 1. Their road wont be easy - and unless TB trades Stamkos, which i continue to doubt, then its hard to believe TB won't right its ship at some point and put together a long winning streak... like we've done in december/january the past few years.

Because I grew up in northern NY without cable. We got CBC Hockey Night in Canada off air. So we would have the Habs or Leafs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It was a thrill when the Rangers were on. It may not be a rivalry in the true sense of the word but it brings back many memories for me.

No excuses, and the misguided testosterone was my playful commentary on the Rangers fans on here, LOL, not the players. they're fine.

Semin is awful and I prefer he be a healthy scratch.

the off-season acquisition was Zack Kassian (traded Prust and a pick), not a top 6 forward, but they didn't add anyone else (other than the flyer on Semin, and the flyer on Fleischmann) so relatively speaking Kassian was their off-season add)

NHL expansion was 1967
Deej : 11/25/2015 12:55 pm : link
Does anyone under the age of 60 really care that much about the Original 6? I cant get into a rivalry that totally pre-dates my fandom. Obviously if we're a rival for 50 years and continue to be a rival because of more recent events/division alignment, Im on board. But to tell me that we're rivals with Detroit or Chicago because 50 years ago we played them a lot more... Im pretty meh.

I wouldn't guarantee anyone but the division winner a playoff spot.

I don't think the bottom half of the Eastern Conference playoff picture is as good as it was last year. I think it's slightly more top heavy this year - I think MTL/NYR/WAS are a cut above with TB as a wildcard.

Our 13th forward would be playing on almost every team (without doing a roster review), and would have played on any of the previous post Cup Era Rangers teams if Im recalling them correctly. As a top 6 on a bunch of them. Really not sure what is NHL playable for forwards at the AHL level. Glass is probably 1st up. Gibbons, Menga, and Adam have 50-100 NHL games but seem meh. Nick Tarnasky has 250 games, even though I have no recollection of him whatsoever.

With a quarter of the NHL season in the books, let's run down the top candidates for all the major awards:

Hart

Winner: Henrik Lundqvist, G, New York Rangers
Runners-up: Patrick Kane, RW, Chicago Blackhawks; Tyler Seguin, C, Dallas Stars

There's no way that Lundqvist can continue at his current pace, with a league-leading .946 save percentage, but there's not much argument that he's had the greatest impact through the first quarter of the season. That's not to say that Kane and Seguin haven't been great, because they are both on pace for better than 115 points, and the last time the NHL's leading scorer had more than 115 points was in 2006-2007 (Sidney Crosby had 120).

Vezina

Winner: Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
Runners-up: James Reimer, Toronto Maple Leafs; Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins

It's easy to pick the first quarter winner, since Lundqvist has been so great, but the challengers are a little more wide open. Fleury has covered for a lot of the Penguins' flaws, while Reimer has taken over the Leafs' starting job with his impressive start to the season. Detroit's Petr Mrazek, and Montreal's Carey Price, who missed time with injury, are other viable candidates.

HA!! i wish! 1 in 4 is Rangers in 1994 numbers. Thats way high. THink they are at 19-20. 1 in 5. Rangers usually need 3 games to get 5 pps/
Price Out

But what happens? Give it up and Canadiens score immediately.
What is that play by Staal?

Blindly throwing the puck behind you out of the defensive zone?

Two horrible defensive plays in a minute.

Not very sharp today plus poor defense is not a good combo against a top team in the league.
Nice period

Pretty shitty sports night in the NHL

Hopefully this is a bit of a wake up call - team has to be better than this. Burn the tape and play well in Boston

got the biggest loss in this game, that looked like an ACL for Price. And I still can't figure out why he was sliding across that way.

Same issues, different result due to a pedestrian Lundqvist/less puck luck. Girardi and Staal have been absolutely brutal this season.

Why did Price finish that period if he got hurt?

I read he was warm and didn't realize the extent of the injury until he rested after the period and cooled down.

hopefully it was just a precaution, but if you watch that video it looked like one of those NFL non-contact injuries.
Thanks.

I saw rumors he was hurt on Twitter during the commercials in the second but the Rangers announcers didn't mention it at the time so I assumed he was fine. I haven't seen a replay of when he was hurt yet.

You do realize the Rangers are the #1 defensive team in hockey?

So obviously neither Staal nor Girardi has been brutal. Staal struggles with speedy, elusive forwards, so there are certain teams like Montreal and Tampa Bay that will give him problems. But he is far from "brutal." He is a solid second-pair d-man

Lowest GAA=/=#1 defensive team. They're a bottom five team in shots allowed and high danger scoring chances against. They've been saved by their goaltending.

A reminder at how they will come through as usual and choke in the playoff matchup. Maybe Kreider can wipe Price's balls for forgiveness.

Sorry if I took this loss bad, at my age and as many times as I have seen this replay, it's tough not to. I guess I should be happy they won 1 fucking cup in the 50 years I have been following them.

What Brett said. Henrik, prior to tonight, was performing at a record setting pace (granted its early). I don't watch the Rangers like you guys, but their D gave the Montreal forwards a lot of space and a lot of freedom to move around, in addition to turning it over.

yes, they asked the NYPD to issue a warrant for his arrest.
Was really excited about the Thanksgiving lineup of games starting

with the Canadiens ... but last night was just horrible. No pressure on offense. No puck control. And Canadiens were walking free 10 feet in front of the net all night long. Not a way to start a Canadiens/Bruins/Flyers weekend.
For the love of god get staal and Girardi a game off each
MetsAreBack : 11/26/2015 9:51 am : link
This weekend. The undertaker needs burn.

I'm not even saying those guys are terrible - but they don't need to play 82 games plus playoffs anymore. Save 'em (I also think mcilraith can help us more this weekend than they can)
