NFT: AARP - Worth it or not?

tony stg : 11/25/2015 8:10 am
Hey big brained people... is joining AARP worth it? Do the benefits you get outweigh the cost of membership? How so(or not)? I'm interested in hearing the experiences of folks who are members and like it as well as those who were once members and stopped.

Thanks in advance and, as always, jokes and funny stories are welcome.

good article breaking it down

so you are asking is it worth around $11.75 a year? What if it's not( it is) to you? What is the downside?

Based on the article you linked, AARP definitely offers an additional possibility for discounts, although they may not always be the best option.

But as the article also points out, most companies offering senior discounts usually start in the 55-60 yo age group (or higher) whereas AARP starts at 50.

I'm 56, my wife is 61, and she recently signed us up. The cost is cheap enough to see if the membership is worth it over the next couple of years.

I remember looking into it at one point and not thinking it was worth it. Really depends on the individual and if you personally would use any of the discounts to places or services.
The one downside...
BamaBlue : 11/25/2015 9:17 am : link
when you join, you will be bombarded with junk snail-mail and junk email. AARP sells your information and there is a lot of money (for them and vendors) to be made off aging people... If you love hearing all about hearing aids, mobility scooters, life insurance, hurry canes, reverse mortgages, prostate medicines, or adult diapers, go for it.

This is double-true for Publishers Clearing House. DO NOT ever put a valid email address on anything responding to their crap!
As mentioned, the

cost is cheap enough, so there's really no reason not to take out a 1 year membership to see if it fits your needs. What is it, $13 for one year?

I was a member for about 5 years before I dropped them. Other than a nice magazine they mailed out, they didn't do a single thing imho that makes being a member worthwhile.

The discounts they offer for car rentals, hotels, etc are miniscule and any insurance offer (home, car, health) never came close to matching what I have now.......not even in the ball park.

You also have to take any product endorsement they make with a grain of salt, because when you read the fine print you'll see where the company in question has paid a fee to AARP for the right to use their name in the ad.

It's been years since I've been a member, but I'd be surprised if anything has changed since I've left.

I have heard that the magazine is all ads
Steve in South Jersey : 11/25/2015 9:28 am : link
and that you get a ton of advertisements in the mail.
what about
GFiLA : 11/25/2015 10:16 am : link
AMAC as an alternative? AARP has been sending me applications but i am in denial. Those organizations are for old people.
What scared me about the AARP....
njm : 11/25/2015 10:27 am : link
is that I started getting snail mail asking me to join within 2 weeks after I turned 50. Where did they get that information? And what are they going to do with any further information I provide?

Pass.

I found that weird too. I was bombarded around my 50th birthday.
The only time we've used AARP
Gman11 : 11/25/2015 10:49 am : link
is to get a discount on hotel - my wife is a member, I'm not. I really think the discount is available to anybody that asks for it, but it makes us think that the AARP membership is worth it.

Otherwise, we don't use the membership for anything.

Now, get off my lawn!

There are 2 sides to their business, the commercial money making side, and the other which is not (obamacare, etc).
