NFT: Our oven just died in the eve of Thanksgiving

steve in ky : 11/25/2015 9:45 pm
Well that sure puts a damper on Thanksgiving.

Relatively speaking there certainly could be far worse things in life so I don't want to complain but it does stink.
OK, that sucks.

Just to make you feel better, many years ago, at my in-laws, I locked the turkey into the "oven clean" cycle.

Everyone survived.
That happened to me

once. We were able to get it fixed early on Thanksgiving day! It was the heating element and the repair company had one in stock. Good luck.
Grill time, baby!

steve in ky : 11/25/2015 10:08 pm : link
My wife and kids loading everything and taking it to her mothers about an hour away and cooking and they eating it there with them since they were going to come to our house before the ovens timely death. My neck and back have been giving me fits and their seating would be like some type of twisted Chinese torture on me so I guess I'll just have to wait for them to bring me leftovers in the evening.

LOL I'll probably end up being the pathetic looking middle-aged man people will feel sorry for all by himself buying food somewhere on Thanksgiving afternoon.

Wow, bummer. You have to lay around and watch football all day, by yourself, and the somebody brings you a bunch of awesome food that you have to eat without doing any work to make.

I really feel for you :)

Yeah when you put it that way maybe it isn't so bad after all. But seriously I really enjoy the Thanksgiving meal with my family and reheated turkey and stuffing is not near as good but it seems to have all worked out considering. At least I think she got a pumpkin pie that will be left with my name on it Hmmm.

Now I just have to add repairing the oven to my to due list.

I don't drink but if I did I do have a 20 year old bottle that I got when I was in a friends wedding. The brides father was some big shot at one of the big distilleries down here and he had bottles of supposedly "their good stuff" made with their names and wedding date on the labels for gifts to everyone in the wedding. Not sure what I'll ever do with it but it looks nice on my book shelf.

I have a lot of serious back and neck trouble and it has been out of sorts lately and I'm in pretty severe pain. They really don't have any seating that would be suitable for me when I'm like this and the pain would be pretty bad. My wife understands when it is bothering me like this I have to be careful. There are times it can get so severe it will cause me to vomit just from the extreme pain so I try and avoid it getting to that point if I can.
Don't get me wrong I love my family

but some of the best holidays I spent were the thanksgivings and christmas eve's and christmases I spent alone in my mid-twenties.

one of the christmas eve's I was at Camelot's (a strip club in Georgetown - and that was awesome), but most of the time I was alone, watched good tv or movies, ate take out and just relaxed.

far cry from my family holiday craziness. maybe make the best of a bad situation and enjoy yourself (even though you'd rather be with your family)

The old adage about families and Holidays didn't become an old adage for no reason. I love my family also ... but, I know exactly what you are talking about. : )

steve in ky : 11/25/2015 11:07 pm : link
Thanks, yeah that's what I'll do.

And all kidding aside I would prefer to be with my family (I even have a nice mother-in-law), especially for Thanksgiving because it's one of my favorite holidays but like you said sometimes the unexpected alone time instead can be a nice day. I didn't get married until I was into my thirties so I'm actually very used to time spent alone and do enjoy it as well.

baadbill : 11/26/2015 9:24 am : link
Thanksgiving ... actually it did more than die - a fire started in the oven that required the fire department to respond - now there is water damage in the kitchen and smoke damage in a greater portion of the house.
Well, if it makes you fell better

Renovation was supposed to be finished. About two weeks back ( actually the Paris bombing morning) the countertops were to be delivered and appliances installed. Water pipe burst in building destroying a number of apartments which were flooded and some homeless. Elevators flooded out. They got one elevator going after two days but no heavy deliveries allowed. Finally just got both elevators on line on Tuesday so delivery and restart next Monday. Despite this I still am thankful I have an apartment. The woman down the hall is living in a hotel. Saw a 90 year old couple in their bathrobes ( in the lobby which also was partly flooded). Their son was coming for them.

Keep the chin up, Steve. There are so many folks in the US who aren't as fortunate as we are.

You can probably purchase a frozen turkey on Friday or Saturday at a discount if you wish to try again at home in a few days.

Just listening to the game and surfing the Internet while our one year old sleeps in his car seat. Him and his sister are the same in that they never fall asleep anywhere other than in their bed/crib or in the car. And since he needs a nap, I volunteered to take him on a little drive and sit in the car until early dinner. And I enjoy my in-laws...but this is just relaxing.
Happy Thanksgiving, Steve

Sorry Steve about your back but how can an oven going out stop you from cooking?

What would happen if the power (or gas) went out?

Did you recently use the oven's self cleaning mode?
Crispino : 11/26/2015 10:49 pm : link
It pretty common for that to blow a temperature regulating fuse. Happened to us twice. First time I paid several hundred bucks to get it fixed. Second time was a couple of weeks ago. I went of YouTube, watched a video on how to fix it, ordered the part for $45, and fixed it myself. And I'm no handyman.

Happy End of Thanksgiving, hope you got through it with some eats and some (relative) comfort, and best wishes for good Holiday weeks to come.

Man, the back and neck things--have you had MRIs, chiropractor, doing yoga, something to put your structure in improvement mode? You always sound very on top of things, so I'm guessing you've looked at options (hopefully short of surgery). In any event, best wishes, again, always appreciate your mostly spot on posts.
