Makes me nostalgic for the days of defense dominated football. After making the playoffs in 1981 and what was to come in the next few years, was certainly an amazing time to be a Giants fan after the 70s.
on that first sack he threw that tackle aside like he was an 8 year old kid or something. I was 14 at the time and remember the pick 6 like and the slide in the endzone like it was yesterday. I also remember the sack where he threw the QB down by his shirt. The first sack I didn't remember though. People throw guys like Ray Lewis in there with him all the time. They need to watch that tape of a young unbridled LT in his 2nd season. The kind of destructive force he was physically simply hasn't been seen in the 40 years I've been watching football.
you still shake your head, that anyone could be so dominant like he was.....even in his last season, at the age of 34, at the end of his career, coming back from an Achilles injury, he was still the best linebacker the Giants have had, since then......how did we go from a team with great linebackers, to guys that are just serviceable?
It still pisses me off, when you Google LT stats, Ladainian Tomlinson comes up....
Jerry Rice was simply amazing but I feel like I've seen WRs with more talent. Jerry Rice tops them because he had more heart. Joe Montana was certainly amazing as well but TBH the QBs of today and what they have accomplished have diminished his legacy a bit for me at least.
The only person I would put against LT as the GOAT would be Jim Brown. He was before my time and that is likely the only reason I put LT ahead of him. I only see Jim Brown from highlight videos and he's incredible to watch. Huge, fast, and didn't seem to know how to fall down.
Sorry I left OP's topic. One of my favorite LT games by far. Thanks for bringing up the memory.
Taylor sat out the first half and their offense still sucked. I don't think Simms played, he was always hurt in those days. Even with Taylor causing the first 2 turnovers, all the offense could get was field goals. 6-6 after 3 quarters on 4 field goals. We just focused on Taylor. I waited for the offense to get the ball so I could have desert at the table. After Taylor scored the TD, I felt like I was watching the greatest game ever! I still miss him to this day.
Was 14. Remember watching in amazement with my Dad.

Seriously. He friggin' rag-dolled that tackle without missing a beat. Then that breakaway speed on the INT...has there ever been a better pure athlete in the NFL?
why was LT coming off the bench for this game? Summerall mentioned he had a bad knee towards the end - was that the reason?
I believe he had sprained a knee against Washington the week before, had a brace & was doubtful for Det.
1982, strike-shortened season & Perkins' last year before the Era of Parcells.
was at my cousin's house for Thanksgiving. My father and I (living and breathing the Giants) insisted that my Aunt put a small TV in the dining room so we would not miss the game during dinner.
So, right before LTs interception return, we were passing food around. My aunt was standing up right behind me with a full bowl of peas. When I saw LT intercept that ball and starting running the other way, I pumped my fist in the air and knocked the bowl right out of her hands. Peas everywhere.
Many of you are too young to have really seen LT play. The videos on youtube are great but you dont get the true experience just watching some highites. To see the opposing teams change their offensive plans solely because of one player on our team was really amazing. Then, to watch LT still dominate no matter how many guys they put on him was even more incredible.
In many respects, some of the athletes in many sports today are better than those who played decades ago. However, I will easily tell you that if you did not see football in the 80's, then you missed some of the best football. Not only the best Giants teams but also the competition. The NFC East dominated. The Niners were great. The bears. Our backup players on defense would be better than most of our starters today.
So, if you liked the video that Kinard posted initially, then look at LT's game vs the Saints with separated shoulder. The saints game - ( New Window )

He was benched for the 1st half by Perkins for disciplinary reasons.
I still love it. Some forget he was actually very good in coverage also, because he could run with any RB. He also had great football instincts and IQ.
He is easily not just the best defensive player, but best football player I've ever seen. He is one of maybe 2 or 3 defensive players that could dominate enough to win a game by himself. The only other one I was thinking of was Reggie White. Ray Lewis isn't even part of a conversation for best defensive player.
My uncle had just moved into a new house in Florham Park. Saw that on TV on that day of live. I remember the star ledger saying he was faster than any of the RBs who played that day.
Besides LT being great, so was John Madden as an announcer.
Not sure there ever will be. I always wish I was just a little bit older so I could have had more vivid memories watching him live on gamedays.
This is the 1st time I saw this. Amazing, amazing and proof there was no one else like LT. Maybe in another 50 years or so ....
I was just wondering if our Giants ever played on Thanksgiving. Well, you answered my question. Thanks!

GOAT period. Not being a homer either.

Because they switched to a 4-3 you clown.
