NFT: ESPN Has Lost 7 million Subscribers Over the Past Two Years

It was in August that Disney CEO Bob Iger warned that ESPN suffered "some subscriber losses," but a regulatory filing late Wednesday indicates a fairly hefty number: 7 million subscribers in two years.

Disney disclosed that its most profitable TV asset has 92 million subscribers, down from 95 million a year ago and down from 99 million the year before that.

Disney's Cable Channels See Steep Subscriber Losses - ( New Window )
Yea well people don't have cable opting for Netflix Hulu etc

When they modled what they need to play for games they did not assume they'd lose 7million subscribers.

I think they charge 6 bucks a month

Imagine cable went a la cart. They'd lose so many subscribers.
Live sports will keep them relevant.

I can't watch MNF on Netflix. Their inventory for live sports is unmatched.
More and more people are cutting the cord

I'd like to know how many cable stations have seen their subscribers go up.

They've all gone down but they also don't have the same expenses.
I'm one of them

The only show I miss is Pardon the interruption. I could care less about college sports which is really the only reason to have ESPN
Reddit streams make it so easy to watch HQ sports these days.

Id cut the cord if my roommate wanted to.

Verizon FiOs allows you to "build your own bundle," including a cable TV package without sports. But true a la cart programming would cause even more losses. Other channels would also be dropped.

Cutting the cord
DCOrange : 11/26/2015 8:28 pm : link
The actual number of people who have cut or are going to cut the cord in the next few years is minimal in the overall scheme of things. By then Disney and every one else will figure it out. And that will probably mean the ESPN junkies will pay (and be willing to pay) more to cover the loses. The cord cutting thing is over-hyped right now.
Sadly, there are not enough cable cutters
mrvax : 11/26/2015 8:49 pm : link
to force the cable companies to cut their crazy high prices. I really hope more & more channels become available through 3rd party companies like Netflix & Hulu.

I still have never been able to find an alternate to cable for one of my favorite TV channels, the ID Channel. And I've looked all over...
Cable TV as we know it is dead in 5 years
Bockman : 11/26/2015 8:51 pm : link
the vast majority of my friends (aged 28 - 35), have cut the cord. The ones who haven't continue to ask questions and are close to joining the movement as well.

Oh, and fuck E!SPN. Male soap opera garbage.
I'm A Sports Junkie

My wife and I got rid of the expanded cable package 20 years ago because our kids were becoming TV zombies. I thought I would go through serious ESPN withdrawal but frankly, there have been very few times that I've missed it. In fact, it makes me appreciate the limited times that there are sporting events on basic cable. Life does go on without ESPN. And if the Giants are on Monday night, I just go to a bar or a friend's house and watch. Don't need ESPN, don't want it.
The problem with ESPN is not the price.

It's the fact that ESPN stopped trying to be your goto source for sports news and began trying to be your social conscience.

Bad move.

My son is 26 and would never pay for cable. He streams everything or uses off air. Kids that age aren't buying the cord.
My son watches his stuff online too..

he is in college and does not even want a TV.
Anything to

get Stephen A and Skip Bayless off their television
Boo ya!
trueblueinpw : 11/29/2015 12:13 pm : link
Too easy. (Aside from MNF, I haven't watched that channel in years).
I have a FiOS Package without ESPn
Matt M. : 11/29/2015 12:20 pm : link
and I don't miss it at all. To start, I haven't been a fan of ESPN for a long time, and really only watched it for MNF when they took it off ABC. Now, in NYC I get any MNF game with the Giants on a local channel, and that is enough for me.
