Great Blue North Draft Report 1st Round Projection

Emil : 11/26/2015 11:04 pm
Updated on November 25th. Has the GMEN taking Oklahoma State DE Emmanual Ogbah. I know many (like JonC) have talked him up here. I don't get a chance to watch much of Oklahoma State, but his stat line is impressive. He has 12 sacks in 11 games, Listed at 6'4" 275, he just sounds like a NYG DE.

I know its early, but I enjoy GBN and Colin's insights. Anyone else familiar Ok St. who can comment on the projection?

2016 first round projection - ( New Window )
Like the position that they have us going for ...

But, I am trying to figure out why they don't have us drafting at 32nd position? WTH?

Excellent player
The_Boss : 11/26/2015 11:28 pm : link
Tune in to any game and he stands out, even in games like last week
when none of his teammates wanted to play. He profiles to an NYG DE to a "T". Like JonC, I've been talking up Ogbah all season. Tune into ABC on Saturday to get a first hand look for yourself when he takes on Oklahoma.

I'll be watching. I've been hearing so much, I have to see it for myself.

His #'s this year on a BAD defense are excellent. His last month of games have been especially impressive, in my opinion. What I like is they put him on both sides and he is still a force. What I don't like is the OSU coaching staff rests him too much. Now, maybe they're high on his backup and want him to get experience for next year when Ogbah's gone, but there is a noticeable drop off when he is on the sideline.
Many will love or hate Ogbah
Sy'56 : 11/27/2015 7:52 am : link
He has an NFL body and will handle the strength of the NFL from day one. He does well after engagement with blockers, showing the know-how when it comes to getting off blocks and flowing towards the action. He will be a very good run defender.

As a pass rusher he lacks the initial burst and lower body flexibility. He plays a high game. Tackles would rather go against a guy like him than the lighter but faster and lower-to-the-ground guys.

Top tier intangibles here. He will be a 1st rounder I think, likely projects to a Vinny Curry type with more upside.
Best 4-3 DE prospect I've seen so far
JonC : 11/27/2015 8:15 am : link
He might be a little limited athletically, as Sy said, but I think he demonstrates plenty of tools worth an extended look.

I need to see and read more about Lawson, he doesn't strike me so far.

The Oregon kid is more likely a 3-4 piece.

JonC and Sy, happy thanksgiving and thank you for your contributions to BBI, especially when it comes to the draft.

I can't remember if I read this or just heard it, but I thought Ogbah initially had some "conditioning" type issues as a Freshman/Sophomore, but committed to changing his body. Maybe it wasn't him, but thought I heard that.

Just reading write ups about him, makes me think of him as a potential LDE in an NFL 4-3. Given Sy's comparison, I like the idea of signing Curry (I think you'll see FAs leaving Philly like rats jumping off a sinking ship this offseason) away from the Eagles and drafting Ogbah. Besides, Ogbah is Nigerian, which means he will probably be wearing blue next year.

Will Emmanuel Ogbah be a first-round draft pick? - ( New Window )
Ogbah is built like a bodybuilder
JonC : 11/27/2015 8:30 am : link
That could be the root of conditioning issues, too much muscle, but that's a guess on my part. Hopefully he doesn't pop for PEDs. I think he'll climb the charts during scouting season, keep an eye on him.

Would Josh Docston

I'll bet dollars to donuts that the Giants sign Curry in the first day or two of FA.
Depending on how the draft plays out...
Reb8thVA : 11/27/2015 9:55 am : link
I wonder if Ezekiel Elliot would be high on their list. Might not be a popular pick but by god do they need a running back with some speed.

Elliot is great, and I wouldn't go crazy, but damn, this team needs a ton of defense. I'm tired of watching poor defense every week. They can win with non pro bowl type RBs, so I'd ideally like a pass rusher or CB if the value is there. Of course, free agency will take care of some of the issues, hopefully
Agree on the defense and pass rush...
Reb8thVA : 11/27/2015 10:05 am : link
I just don't want to see us get caught up in another Cedric Jones situation. I'd rather go talent over need.
They'll wrap up as many perceived needs as possible via UFA
JonC : 11/27/2015 10:12 am : link
They'll draft for talent more often than not, but RB tends to fall behind DE/WR/CB on their board unless the RB is something special.
I don't care if they draft an RB in the
Reb8thVA : 11/27/2015 10:14 am : link
First, second, third or fourth round but they need a RB with some speed who can be the featured back , even if they go RB by committee.
The one player I'm very curious about
barens : 11/27/2015 10:19 am : link
Is Shaun Oakman. Not sure if he is a legit first round player, or does he slide to day 2? When you watch him play, he leaves a lot to be desired, and then out of nowhere, he'll make an amazing play. But they are really few and far between.
I think Sterling Shepard
beatrixkiddo : 11/27/2015 10:20 am : link
would be a great pick-up in this draft, reminds me of cruz a little and would provide some needed insurance at the position.

I think DE, LB, and DB are all at the highest need of the talent spectrum. Pass Rusher first and foremost. A lot depends on how well they do in FA this year. Hope they set themselves up to grab BPA, would be nice to see a talented huge TE weapon on this team.
I think we need
old man : 11/27/2015 11:26 am : link
a pass rush DT alongside Hank.
We also really need a solid OL pick, again, in rds 1 or 2.
The FA class looks avg+ since teams seemed to have locked up the good OLinemen this past offseason.
Odi and Og-b?
Hankins essentially is your pass rushing DT
JonC : 11/27/2015 12:49 pm : link
and Bromley will be counted heavily to step up, and soon, as he has the opportunity to flash right now.

If NYG decides to cut Beatty loose, I expect them to go after a Cordy Glenn to finish the OL. Hart will get first crack at developing into the next RG, and they'll look at other OL prospects mid to late rounds.

When the draft finally gets here, expect the usual suspects at the top : DE, WR, CB to get first looks.
Consistent questions regarding character and motor with Oakman
JonC : 11/27/2015 12:50 pm : link
and he's 24 or 25 when next season begins.

Baylor has a big matchup tonight @ TCU, should present a good look at Oakman.

Per usual we agree. In fact, I would not be surprised to see the Giants go rounds 1-3 in this order, DE, CB, WR. They've spent three premium picks on OL in the last four years, that should be enough. Resources need to be spent elsewhere, like the three positions mentioned above.
Emil
JonC : 11/27/2015 1:02 pm : link
If they're able to retain Prince, then expect them to look for a slot CB as we know for a fact they made a big pitch to Buster Skrine last offseason, and were outbid by the Jets.

If the prospects are there when NYG is on the clock, I'm expecting a WR and DE in the first three rounds.
Not a fan
ghost718 : 11/27/2015 1:17 pm : link
Effort is also an issue with him.I've seen running plays where he barely takes 2 steps once out of his stance.

What the Giants need is Bosa,Calhoun, or both.
JonC
Emil : 11/27/2015 1:21 pm : link
My quick read on the talent thus far is that 4-3 DE actually looks to be pretty strong this year, with some quality prospects maybe lasting into the 2nd round. Unless a can't miss outside WR is still on the board, I think DE is the most likely play in round 1.

I know Prince has the injury history, but I think if you're the Giants you make a strong effort to bring him back. With Prince, they have the best to CBs in the division, and Prince is one of the best run defending CBs out there. A third CB is a must, and I think they have to address nickel CB in FA and draft another early.

Part of me wonders if the Giants will stick with Brinkley at MLB. He's proven the ability to be a very strong MLB in the 4-3 base. Have Kennard make the defensive calls, and continue to find the right guy at WLB. Thomas and Casillias seem like nice guys to have, but a difference maker would be nice at WLB.

Out of curiosity, which WR and CB prospects do you like?
Emil
JonC : 11/27/2015 1:33 pm : link
I haven't done as much homework on prospect yet, my current consulting role is demanding of my time.

Hargreaves is a consensus top prospect, but I've seen very little of him so far. I like Mackensie Alexander, Kendall Fuller, Kevon Seymour, and Lloyd Carrington, to name a few CBs.

My feeling is WR is a bit lean at the top in terms of talent, but I like Will Fuller and Josh Doctson. Dural, Caroo and Shepard might be 2-3 round range picks.

Would like to see the Giants get a younger version of Dwayne Harris in the draft. A swiss army knife type of guy.
If the draft went that way, I would take Billings.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 11/27/2015 2:53 pm : link
I know the Giants have 2 young DTs, but Billings is the best player available from that spot on (of the guys listed in this mock).

re: WR
JonC : 11/27/2015 4:30 pm : link
The two WRs they targeted last Spring in the 3rd round were Strong and Lockett, which provides ideas as to skillsets they were seeking.
Brinkley has played very well
JonC : 11/27/2015 4:57 pm : link
If he's their best option to replace Beason, he'll be back. I'd expect them to see who's out there via UFA, a 26/27 year old ascending talent, for example. MIKE and RT are two positions where NYG has preferred to try and fill with veterans for 20+ years.

Yup, Michael Barrow and Pierce come to mind. Someone might shake loose.

What are your thoughts on Schwartz? I am trying to keep an open mind, but he has been the least impressive so far. Newhouse seems to have held up better.

It depends. I do think Billings would be a good pick because he is like the DT most of us were clamoring for 2 years ago in Aaron Donald. very quick off the ball and can be a terror in opposing team's backfields. You sandwich him between Hankins and possibly a more recovered JPP and you have that the D-Line causing pressure it couldn't do this year. Heck, Maybe Billings and Whitlock's quickness up the middle would be enjoyable to watch. I would not doubt the idea of drafting him at all. Bromley is a overdrafted DT and the only other option would probably be Markus Kuhn, which none of us would argue is good options.
Your concept isn't wrong
JonC : 11/28/2015 8:44 am : link
it is the shortage of draft picks and how NYG tends to prioritize positions among those six precious picks that will likely push DT down the ladder.
For anyone who watched that game last night,
barens : 11/28/2015 8:45 am : link
Oakman just doesn't do it for me. I don't know if it's effort, or a lack of talent despite his freakish size and athletic ability, but his impact is just not felt. He easily lets himself get blocked and pushed around by what should be inferior competition, and the pass rush is just not there.

Still very curious to see if a team takes him early given his size, and if rocks the combine.
It appears weather ruined the game
JonC : 11/28/2015 9:00 am : link
but Oakman definitely plays very tall, isn't instinctive in playing two ways or finding the football, and doesn't play with physicality.

He is athletic and rangy and could probably be pro coached up quite a bit, but he feels like a boom/bust choice at this stage.

I think the Giants have several needs worthy of first round
Jersey55 : 11/28/2015 10:59 am : link
