Kirk Cousins Has a Really Good Group of Targets

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/27/2015 12:04 pm
DeSean Jackson didn't play in Week 3 against us.

Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Jordan Reed, Jamison Crowder...there are some serious match-up problems for the Giants there.

We'll also get a better read this week on how much we will miss Johnathan Hankins - Patriots different style of offense, it wasn't as much of an issue.

who is out/doubtful for the Skins as of now?
I think the only relevant name in the list eric posted
gidiefor : Mod : 11/27/2015 1:59 pm : link
is DeSean Jackson - he can be a cross the field thread and is very good at YAC - fortunately, one of the things we have done well this year is the way we've played YAC receivers. However, Jackson does add a dimension that we haven't faced with them yet this year. The other very fortunate thing is that the Washington Redskins Quarterback is Cousins - and he didn't face JPP the first game -- and I think that kind of equalizes the field.

It's gonna be an NFCE slugfest in any event and not a gimmee - but the Giants should be able to pull this out!
Cousins doesn't stink

Like a lot of QB's who aren't Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, he's going to have days when he looks pretty bad, but he's also very capable of getting into a groove. Shanahan believed in him.
p.s.-- If Prince returns at the top of his game, that will help.

And although Washington is not a really good team, they can move the ball. Also, Let's face it, our defense is mediocre at best. We have a solid chance to win but I will not be too optimistic until we have done so and the game is over.

I remember one of the first reports that came out in the media after we signed DRC. It revealed how when he was in Philly that he always ran stride for stride with DeSean Jackson. We'll be okay in the secondary, provided that our safeties take their heads out of their asses.
They've got quality receiving depth...
Torrag : 11/27/2015 2:37 pm : link
...but none of these guys is a difference maker. The only reason it's a concern is noone in our secondary beyond DRC and Prince can cover their grandmother.

Cousins is an average player. For me their lines are overrated. Their backers are mediocre. Their secondary is pedestrian. Washington isn't a talented club.
...
Mdgiantsfan : 11/27/2015 2:39 pm : link
Outside of Reed, I like the matchup of our DBs against their WRs. Add to that, Kirk is the QB and it makes me feel even better. Obviously any given Sunday can always be said, but this is a game that should set up well for Big Blue.

For me it boils down to Eli and Co. protecting the ball. If they don't turn it over, then I think they will be able to put up points against them.
The Giants best defense is getting to Cousins.
Boy Cord : 11/27/2015 3:02 pm : link
He is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with and without pressure. The Giants will have the three best defenders on the field Sunday with JPP, DRC, and Prince (DC's defense has minimal talent and it got worse yesterday with the loss of Culliver).

Since JPP's return the pass rush just looks better, even competent. Hell, the Giants LBs even look competent with Brinkley in the middle. I have faith in DRC and Prince to limit Desean and Garon. Cousins will be looking for Reed, Crowder, and Matt Jones as a result. The two most important defenders may be McBride and Brinkley. I also like the idea of Merriweather and Collins doing what they do best, and that's hitting. My favorite Giants game of all time is arguably SB XXV. They beat the hell out of the Bills receivers. Same thing here. If they catch it make them feel it.

It's important for the Giants to keep DC's receivers in front of them and avoid the big plays. More plays give Cousins more chances to make mistakes.

Back to DC's defense. Their front seven was supposed to be their strength. Rumor is Kerrigan is hurting more than just his hand. Hatcher has been the most active. For a lot of fat on the front they are doing an anemic job against the run and have 17 sacks. Keenum Robinson is out and week after week Cooley KILLS Perry Riley for his inability to shed blocks and cover. Murphy from Stanford has been a major disappointment.

Their CBs are Breeland and Blackmon and Hall. However, Hall is being forced into that role. Gruden admittedly wants him to learn the safety position. ODB should have a field day. An absolute field day. Eli needs to go after Vereen and ODB all day long. I know the OL is a mess (so is DC's, so we can't complain), but just get it in their hands and let them do their thing.

Back to the OP. I will take Eli, ODB, Vereen, Harris, Randle and Tye over what DC brings to the table. I like the Giants defense better as well. I will also take the Giants staff with two weeks of preparation. DC has one advantage, and that's home field.

The NFL is a week-to-week league. It truly is amazing the conclusions that are based on literally one game - hell, one freaking point!! In NY, think of the talk about Tom/Jerry and whether they stay or go. DC can turn into Philly sports radio in a nano second or they can talk about running the table. One point is all it takes. I like the a Gmen's chances.
Shut down the running game
David in LA : 11/27/2015 3:19 pm : link
and make 3rd down less manageable. I'll take my chances with Cousins consistently facing 3rd and longs.
One other thing DC has in their favor.

This is DC's season. Their backs are against the wall. What I can't figure out is if this means they will play tight or play like they have nothing to lose.
With Prince back
giantgiantfan : 11/27/2015 4:42 pm : link
I'm not worried. DRC has the speed to deal with Jackson and Prince can handle his side. If we can stop the run like we did the first time we played em we should be good on defense. We also didn't have JPP last time and you figure after 2 games and 4 weeks of practice he's knocked off most of the rust. This would be a nice gmae for JPP to let the league know he's back and that Nicks guy.
Look at this way
giantgiantfan : 11/27/2015 4:48 pm : link
would you rather be facing Jackson who is a go route receiver or ODB who is the complete package? Advantage: Giants on the W/R front, throw in our superior CBs. Everytime we play these guys people get worried. We've got Washington figured out until they prove otherwise. In the words of one poster we will rip off there heads and shit down their throats.
P.s.

In my long experience as a Giants fan
Mike in Philly : 11/28/2015 10:21 am : link
I have seen too many occasions where they played down to the level of an opponent, losing games they should win easily. They've had a propensity to allow mediocre QBs to look like HOF candidates.

Fact is, Redskins do have talent in their receivers, and Cousins has, at time, shown the talent to play very well. The issue with him is he is not consistent with his level of play. We talk about good Eli vs. bad Eli, well with Cousins you get ok Kirk vs. atrocious Kirk.

As long as we win the TO battle and keep stupid penalties to a minimum, this SHOULDN'T be a difficult game. But...
You know what this reminds me of albeit not as hyped?

There are always legitimate excuses, but yes, we are the better team and I expect a win. That said, any team, i.e Skins in this case, can play over their heads for one game, especially at home and win, even convincingly

responses on this thread...many so-called "intelligent fans" completely discounting a division rival, including a QB who is completing 68 percent of his passes this season (and 80 percent in his last two home games). I think NYG fans only evaluate Cousins on the three terrible games he's played against us and not his entire body of work. Hopefully that continues. Is he a "good" QB? I wouldn't say that, but he certainly is capable of beating a pretty bad Giants defense. And the Skins do have some quality targets to throw to.

BigBlueShock...I don't know why you think I have an obsession with the Cowboys. Pointing out that they are a legitimate challenger to the Giants doesn't make me have some sort of obsessive "schtick"...BTW, have you seen their record against us the last five years? Same with the Eagles, but you don't say I have some obsession with them. If you ask me, you seem to have some issue giving Dallas any credit at all.

JOrthman, have you ever listened to local DC radio after the Skins lose? (which is often) Their fans never say the other team is better or played better. They always say "we beat ourselves" and/or "the refs screwed us."

BigBlueShock : 11/28/2015 11:45 am : link
Way to swing and miss. There is a HUGE gap between not giving an opponent any credit at all and your constant praise of all things Dallas the past few seasons. So, because I didn't agree with your judgement of their overall talent, that immediately takes me to disrespecting our opponents, territory? Oh please. Why can't it be somewhere in the middle?

And since you overlooked it, I'm not even the first one to bring it up on this thread, so apparently others have noticed it too. Your infatuation with Dallas' talent the past few years is well known. It's not me making shit up.

This has never been more apparent than following their last two losses. Doc Walker said the drops were the difference in the NE game, and we all know the refs cost them in Carolina. DC had 3 points until last-minute garbage time vs. NE. It was more than the drops.

And Eric is right on the money. This is how they comfort themselves and it has been going on for decades.
You want to look at stats on Washington
gidiefor : Mod : 11/28/2015 12:13 pm : link
let's look at stats -- the Skins are averaging 22.1 points and a little over 2 touchdowns a game

Their leading TD maker is Reed with 6 TDs on the season in 10 games
next is Garcon and Jones (RB) with 3 each - Cousins has 2 Rushing TDs - no one else has more than 1 TD scored on that team

they've had 1 game with over 40 points against New Orleans -- who has a terrible defense and besides that 1 other game with over 30 points in Tampa Bay

The Giants are averaging 27.3 Points and just about 3 touchdowns a Game
the Giants leading TD maker is Beckham with 8 - Harris has 4 - Randle and Vereen each have 3

they Giants out-scored Washington 32 to 21 in the last game and that was with Cousins 316 yds - Cousins has had only 2 other games with over 300 yds - Tampa and N Orleans

With Prince back in and the addition of JPP I think the defense should be better - Unga was the MLB the last time we played -- Brinkley is a damned sight better in my opinion --

Spags seems to have the Washington offense pegged really well - Eli has a lesser Washington Defense to play against than he had last time with a starting CB out and Kerrigan playing hurt - he didn't have a complete Offensive line last time they played either. Another thing is that Harris wasn't really being fully utilized on offense the last time they played.

Washington has Jackson to improve them this time and that may be their X factor -- but Cousins is not a world beater -- he's a dink and dunker -- he's not going to beat the Giants with the long ball with JPP and Ayres putting pressure on him and that's Jackson's supposed strength

I just can't see the Skins winning this one -- unless the Giants come out flat and just don't perform -- that hasn't been their MO this season -- so the Giants should be favored in this game and I fully expect them to seize this game and win it

would be saying they have no chance.

What is it when one says they have a really good group of targets and the Giants have some "serious match-up problems".

This coming on the heels of Eric telling the board several times over the past few weeks that with romo back, it was likely the Cowboys would run the table and be our biggest threat. Now that the old wishbone has been cracked again - I guess a different team has to be propped up, and it would look completely ridiculous to foist the Eagles in our faces as being a juggernaut.

So what does that leave? Kirk Fucking Cousins.

Not in years, luckily I've been out of DC Radio territory for awhile. I can only judge cousins on what I've seen and when I've seen him play he is horrible. He will have a decent game now and again and then fall way back down to reality. There were a ton of passes he missed last game that if he just makes a few of him, they might of been able to pull it off.
Bottom line is this
JOrthman : 11/28/2015 7:40 pm : link
Can we lose? Yes, but if we lose I think it would be more about us playing poorly then anything the Skins do. I think this team has shown so far they can play with the best in the league, so there is no reason they should falter to this team.

you said that with Romo the Cowboys immediately became the favorite to win the East.

And you did say it was likely they would run the table.

Because I've kept pointing out that games against the Panthers and Packers weren't these gimmes that people make them out to be.

Did you say "The Cowboys WILL run the table"? Probably not, but you indicated several times that a 3-7 team had a chance to run the table, and even put some comparisons to the Redskin team from RGIII's rookie year that it was a possibility.

That isn't a flat out lie at all.
