NFT: God& ^^& #$& *, F98& ^%$#%@& ing Christmas Lights

Just once, it would be nice if at least 50% of the strands from last year still worked (at least more than half way).

Clark, I feel your pain:(

I've been lucky this year so far...
Vinny from Danbury : 11/27/2015 6:55 pm : link
it looks like the only lights I lost last season are the incandescent Icicle String mini lights I had used for a few seasons. I also lost a line of color changing LED C7's. But other than that, everything seems to be working. I have a few things I haven't checked yet, so that list could still grow.

I do a relatively large display every year, for many years now. I've had a lot more luck since I stopped using LED strings so much. I rarely seem to get those to last into a second season. The old style incandescent ones just seem to hold up better for me once they get wet, or snowed on.

Having said that, I have 3 crates full of brand new light strings that I've picked up over the years as extras, and I have enough of some LED icicle mini lights I used several years ago to use this year without buying anything new, so I am going to use them in place of what I lost from last season. But most likely I'll have to replace those next year as well, as when I used them in the past, they just didn't last. I definitely feel your pain. Heh heh...
I hired a local company to do everything
AP in Halfmoon : 11/27/2015 7:24 pm : link
I added lights to a big bush outside and that was it.

AP are you in the Halfmoon as the Clifton Park area? If you are you did you get. I got a price from a local company and they wanted close to 2000.00 to do just my shrubbery and one large spruce tree.
The little lights are not twinkling

I know art and... Thanks for noticing.
I don't think there is a job I hate worse

Then putting up Christmas lights. The OP is right, the hard part is not actually putting up the lights, but getting those fucking leads to work.
Try

Star shower laser lights 2 min prep.
And statistically, you know there's a # of BBI ers
CRinCA : 11/27/2015 8:33 pm : link
who leave their lights hanging up all year.

I'll refrain from commenting further.

What's the point of putting them away if you're expecting to put them up again?
There is no winning with xmas lights. You may get lucky with back to
PhiPsi125 : 11/27/2015 9:47 pm : link
back years with no replacements but that is blue moon type of shit.

I came to the conclusion today that I will just buy new lights every year and then take the busted strings from the year prior and return them. If these stores can't sell me lights that work for more than one xmas season then screw them. I will never pay for xmas lights again.

Yes, we used Experience Decorating from Schenectady. They set up both trees and a bunch of decorations inside and out, outside lights, etc. My wife is really in to Christmas. They charged us $750. They had 4 people for at least 4 hours.
BTW
AP in Halfmoon : 11/27/2015 9:51 pm : link
I personally think it's ridiculous but the decision is above my pay grade
Sorry, I just can't hang up Christmas lights...
sb from NYT Forum : 11/27/2015 11:01 pm : link
...when it's 65 degrees out.
Obviously light strands eventually fail
Jim in Fairfax : 11/27/2015 11:54 pm : link
But if you have 50%+ of your strands failing every year you're doing something seriously wrong.

Either you're buying really shitty quality lights or you're treating them very badly. Probably both.
Yes, I buy shitty quality lights, and I treat them like shit.
Crispino : 11/28/2015 7:14 am : link
And yes half of them fail the next year, and yes, I curse up a blue streak because I'm so pissed. And no, I never learn my lesson.

Thanks AP, If it's not to late I may give them a call.
We buy new
Bubba : 11/28/2015 7:57 am : link
lights the week after Christmas for half price so we always have working strings for the next year.
Haha!

I know Home Depot (and I think Lowes) have a trade in program in November (they will take bad strings):

Quote:
It’s time to switch to LED Christmas lights, and The Home Depot wants to make that easy to do. That’s why The Home Depot is holding its 2015 Christmas Light Trade-In Event!

Starting November 5, 2015, take your old incandescent Christmas light strings to your local Home Depot store for recycling. You’ll receive a $3, $4 or $5 discount toward the purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified LED Christmas lights. You’ll get a coupon for each string of old lights you give us. (Limit 5 redemptions per customer.)

This ended Nov 15th.
