Missing 2 starters on O-line, Giants changing starters at 3 positions: Geoff Schwartz from RG to LG, John Jerry to RG, Dallas Reynolds to C. Source - ( New Window )
I hope this works. Honestly, I dont know if Schwartz is the better player. Flowers has struggled. I don't like having Flowers and Schwartz on the left side. Eli better get rid of the ball quickly today.
When other teams would fold under this...we are going to be fine.....Bank it.
Flowers in particular is going to benefit from the bye and have his best game of the year...Jerry is going to have a good game...
And Schwartz for all the pounding he takes here is a warrior who like Pugh is versatile. Reynolds is not a top pro but a top backup.
I bet that three guys playing three different positions and absent there three best players ...have none or a minimum of penalties..playing an away game in a noisy stadium....An Accomplishment.
And they are Giants and they are well coached and they are well motivated.
I don't like this at all. Let's not forget, Schwartz was horrid at LG
unless the coaches think they have a matchup that they like over on the left side that they can exploit with Flowers and Schwartz and maybe we see them try to run the ball more to that side today.
...that should help mitigate the effects of the reshuffle to some extent.
They didn't really have 2 weeks of practice. The players headed out for vacation on Wednesday the 18th and came back this past week. The coaches on the other hand worked this out.
that Schwartz struggled on the left, but that Jerry wasn't a disaster there on the couple of occasions that he spelled Pugh there, while he routinely was bad on the right.
aside from who plays better where, this changes up the chemistry all along the line, rather than just on the left
I thought there was a small chance that this would happen
We're missing 3 starters on the OL. I'm thinking we'll need 30 plus points to win this unless we can run the ball effectively. Nothing is ever easy for this team.
RE: I thought there was a small chance that this would happen
What is best at this point. Not what you really wanted to see for the biggest game of the season...but Washington is not the best team we have faced either.
Im sure Flaherty and McAdoo believe this is the best lineup, but holy crap that right side is troublesome and Schwartz was not playing well at LG last preseason either. This is going to be a much closer game then I originally anticipated, as long as the defense holds up. This might also be a game where specials can make a difference. Ugh!
This is more about Jerry, who they see as a much better RG than he is an LG. They expect the veteran Schwartz to be more flexible.
The scary thing is that thi may be a sign that they expect Pugh's concussion to be a long-term problem. They've previously been OK with Jerry in at LG for a game or two. Are they making this switch because they're expecting it to last longer?
has been playing better than expected and now in week 12 against a division opponent they are going to mess with the continuity and break it up? This is bizarre to say the least.
the best guard they have to be next to the rookie. That would explain the Schwartz move. So far, Schwartz has not been worth the $ it took to get him here. I hope this changes today.
My opinion is that after two weeks of practice they are
convinced this is the best option for this one game. Schwartz is a veteran and has played both. I'm guessing Jerry is better at RG, so they think this is a more solid line for today. There has to be a reason to do this.

The Giants didn't practice last week. The players were off. They only practiced this week.
Agreed, but I'm sure the coaches were reviewing film
Do we as fans ever really agree on anything? Even those in support of the move are assuming that we have had two weeks to prepare for this or just showing blind faith in our coaching staff amd giving them the benefit of the doubt over actually saying this is a good idea.
They probably want the best "puller" on the left side
I don't remember the last time they shuffled the line like this. It must have been a long time coming. Jerry when he is on can be average and not embarrassing. Moving Schwartz I don't get at all. But then again the coaches must know something we don't.
Last year, initially the Giants had Schwartz at LG and he looked terrible. Later in the year, for the brief time he was healthy, he played RG and played much better and seemed more comfortable. Jerry, when forced to play at RG last year looked terrible. This year, he has had to briefly fill in at both OG positions and actually looked decent when at LG. So, why in the world would you shuffle these two?
Schwartz is a better run blocker than Jerry. Since they seemed to be more productive to theleft side, that's probably why they made this move. (Schwartz also with the gimpy ankle so they probably don't want to pull him from the right side which also likely factored into the mix.)

If I remembered right, didn't he have troubles when at LG before?

Yes. They put him there to start in 2014 and he was horrid when he was actually on the field. He had NEVER played the left side in his life, always an RT or RG when he actually played.
GO GMEN

I do not actually get it.....but i am not paid to get it.

The whole O-line needs to step up.
Maybe a true West Coast offense day. The Giants may not attempt to run the ball except for check downs. Vereen may get a real workout today.

Uh, Bill Walsh once said that the perfect day in his offense was 250 yards passing, 150 yards rushing

Meant a veteran next to Flowers, especially one who is a starter.

guess is that they want a veteran next to Schwartz. No excuses. Next man up.

They could use one next to Schwartz anyway ;-)

Next man up, find a way to win a pivotal game.
