Wife: How do they almost beat Pats, get killed by Skins?

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/30/2015 8:50 am
Anyone have any answers?

This wasn't a trap game. This was the most important game this team has played this late in the season in three years. That effort was pathetic. Shame on the entire franchise.

Still mumbling to myself, "I'm tired of this sh*t" this morning.

Ughhhhhh.....

No, he's got more than one WR to throw to, even if you discard Randle. His line was bad yesterday, but even when he had time he made some extremely shitty throws.

Only on planet 'Eli Can Do No Wrong' is it impossible for the guy to ever have a bad game. Unfortunately for dep and the Giants, this is Earth.

what the fuck is your problem dude? Did I even say he played well. Get a fucking grip asshole. This team lacks talent. And when you lack talent, your play will vary from week to week. It has nothing to do with how Eli plays or how he played. You turned my line of saying this team lacks talent to Eli does no wrong.

Shit gets old dude. Find some new material. You clearly are showing you have nothing to add to this thread other than to be a shit stirrer. Grow up already.

You could say the injuries on the OL affected them compared to the last game but they got guys like Prince back for this game so the defense was stronger than it was before. They added Nicks for better depth. Overall, the roster talent level didn't have a big drop off. Plus the players seemed to come out with no energy compared to the Redskins who were amped up and even OBJ admitted it. That's unacceptable and makes it look like a coaching issue if you can't get your players ready to play in a huge game like this. I know players should always be ready for every game in their NFL career but that's not always how it works. Things aren't always that easy. And if you have to give them a kick in the ass, you should.

The team cannot figure out how to

have a winning record in the division. Even when the Eagles flat out stink, they cannot beat them twice in a season. They can beat the Redskins like a drum when all that is on the line is a lower draft pick but if the division is on the line they play like they did yesterday. They also cannot beat the Cowboys with any consistency. I believe 10-13 in the division since the Superbowl win.

This is the kind of game the Giants OFTEN lose. I hoped for the best, but I SO expected this.

Call it post-bye, call it a trap game -- whatever? Whenever the Giants are in one of these all they gotta do to right the ship and control their own destiny is WIN this very winnable game situations -- and everyone picks them to win -- they come out flat and don't show up.

Yeah, the injuries are a big factor, but the sad truth is that the 2015 Giants are just not a very good team, and they have been exceedingly unlucky as well. But good teams make their own luck and find ways to win. Bad teams find ways to lose. And this is a bad team. Has been since training camp. The only reason they are still in it at all is because Romo and Bryant have been hurt all year as well.

And they still can't cover DeSean Jackson and never will.

things before this team shows what they really are...which is a woefully undertalented team that does not seem to possess any mental toughness or leadership.

I find it amazing we do so well on offense considering we have only one guy who makes plays. Reuben Randle is a disaster...his consistent failure to compete, game in and game out, makes me wonder why he is even out there. Unless Eli throws it right in his hands, it is either incomplete or picked off. He is absolutely no help to OBJ. We have no running game, no TE to speak of and really no slot receiver. How OBJ continues to put up the stats is a credit to his talent and work ethic.

On defense, we have nothing...no pass rush, a mediocre run defense, safeties who are ridiculously bad.

I think the only reason we are competing at all is we have a coaching staff that is coaching their butts off. The injuries haven't helped but our depth is pitiful.

And, quite frankly, this is what bad teams do...they will compete sometimes against a high ranked team but then pull stinkers against very weak teams.

are the defending super bowl champs, we played them at home, high profile game, we knocked out their best WR, they have first place locked down, it was a non-conference game

against Washington, we were without our starting center, we are coming off a bye and yes a bit live action rusty, on the road, our stating right guard goes down leaving us with a basically all-back up o-line, we're on the road, Washington is a tough team inside the hashmarks while we are better outside the hashmarks with our current injury situation, they had much more motivation to come out flying.

People really forget how bad the Giants looked in 2011

Pretty sure there were threads on here saying they hoped the Giants lost their final 2 games because the Giants were just going to get killed in the playoffs anyway...

In 11 against the Redskins Eli threw 3 picks including 1 in the endzone...

This. I feel like people aren't acknowledging how banged up the Pats were when we played them. They are not some unbeatable juggernaut when the OL is in shambles and Brady's best weapons are playing hurt or out. Especially when they play Eli and TC

this isn't the 1st time we've come out way too conservative.

it's not just the O either. Spags had a horrible plan vs. the 49ers and did the same thing vs. Cousins.
the only times the Skins looked uncomfortable were the series he got aggressive. Both run blitzing + pass blitzing. Cousins does not handle pressure well but he will pick you apart if you let him sit in the pocket

same thing happened vs. Kap. We made Kap look awesome when he SUCKED vs. everyone else (and eventually got benched for Gabbert). everyone was playing man vs. the 49ers and Kap couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. we dropped into a soft zone and he destroyed us.

i'm a huge Spags guy but he needs to grow a sac and put some pressure on the offense.
Our starting OL...
Johnny5 : 11/30/2015 10:09 am : link
... had 3 backups in at G-C-G. It's not shocking to me that the offense couldn't do shit for most of the game.

Still I was pretty pissed. No sympathy from my wife though, she yelled at me and said "it's a football game get over it!" Almost caused an argument... lol [cry]

The plague of injuries and the wild inconsistency
Mr. Bungle : 11/30/2015 10:45 am : link
league-wide have really diluted my enthusiasm for the NFL.

I used to get so mad after a Giants loss. I wouldn't be able to think of anything else well into the next day. Now, five minutes after a game is over, it's the furthest thing from my mind. And that's because I just don't care anywhere near as much as I used to.

Not that long ago, the teams that were built the best were the best. And they would stay that way at least for several years. Now, to be among the "best" often means winning just enough regular season games to qualify for the postseason and then be relatively healthier than the other teams in the postseason and get the right breaks and bounces. So you have teams that look like complete crap for stretches in October or November going on to deep postseason runs in January (Giants included). And then the very next year, several of those "great" teams from the previous year look mediocre or worse.

It doesn't really excite me the way the league used to.

and the NFL is very competitive. I think we were probably a little overrated heading into the game and the Redskins a little underrated. That is probably your answer. I saw we were down 17 - 0 at the half and didn't even turn on the television. I had a gut feeling we would loose this game coming off the bye week.

I like the fact that we were at least able to score some points in the 4th quarter and were not shut out. I saw that as a positive. In years past when the team really sucked we would have been shut out.

I still think we are on the upswing. Big game coming up this week against the Jets. Lets see how we respond.

3 new starters on the oline and not as skilled as the starters they replaced, Eli throwing a few poor passes, turnovers, etc. The team talked the talk, but couldn't follow through and walk the walk! I put a lot of that on preparation. The coaches had two full weeks to change things up and it looked like the same old Giants to me! Washington also appeared to see the same things they've seen and had most passes well-defensed.

Perhaps the message is not sinking in, perhaps they need a change in scheme and philosophy?! Coughlin can't coach forever and I think his time might be coming to and end if he can't get his team to win at least 3 or 4 more games to get in. Mara will have a very diificult decision to make, but it might just be that time.
I do think if the Giants do not make the playoffs

This is a team that is totally fucked from top to bottom. A GM that assembles an injury prone and not very talented roster. Players don't really care when Washington smacks them in the mouth. Coaches didn't have this team ready to play. DRC goes out and then next offensive play is soooo obvious they would throw it deep against the scrub Reese has as his back up. But we totally didn't see it coming.

McAdoo's offense is really uninspiring. We are a mess. I mean, I've used this before but to quote Ed Harris (Gene Cernan in Apollo 13 "What on the spacecraft is good?" On this team, we have a QB and a WR.

Consistency is a talent in itself. If everyone were consistent at what they do, you would never be able to separate the good from the bad.

Reuben Randle has great talent. He may have a good game here and there. The reason he isn't consistent is because he isn't good enough to do that. Newhouse can have a good game here or there (as he has this season), but he's a middling player who's bounced around the NFL before coming to the Giants for a reason. It is why certain players are stars in the league and others are not. Those stars are able to be good 8 out of 10 times, while the others may only be able to give it to you 4 out of 10.

When you have too many of those kind of middling players on your roster, you will always be subject to this level of volatility. This is where the issue of the teams lack of high quality talent comes in.

Injuries were a

big factor in this lose. It is also the reason they needed to win the Cowboys' game to open the season when the game was all put won. They win this game or that game, they likely win the division.

Totally agree!

I was watching the Sunday night game and came away thinking, wow these two teams are loaded! Especially compared to the Giants. Sure Brady is losing targets like crazy, but even Scott Chandler would start at TE and Brandon LaFell would start at #2 WR for the Giants. Both defenses were stocked with talent, and none of the Giants RBs would start for either team.

The Giants better spend some money this offseason cause Denver, New England, Cincy, Carolina, Minnesota, Green Bay, and Arizona are not going to get bad anytime soon. The class of both conferences so much more talented than the Giants it's scary. Starting to agree with those who say we are really a 6-10 team if not for a elite QB and WR.

Put aside for a moment that this team is mediocre (avg to below avg talent + year in year out continuing injuries + lack of motivation from players=mediocre).Put aside that they are only afloat due to a god awful div.

You have a Skins team that just had their asses handed to them the week before. Sounds like Gruden spent last week telling them they were soft as tissue paper and that in the first meeting the Giants bitch slapped them...so lets say the Skins were properly motivated.

You have the Giants coming of a one point loss but hearing how close it was and that they have the Pats number-ya got to be pretty good to almost beat the Pats. This roles into a bye week where job one is to rest and heal.

Then you have Thanksgiving day where the Giants are basically given an early Christmas present by the NFCE and all of the media is saying that they are a sure thing to win the div. And... your facing the Skins who you beat something like 5 in a row.

Jim in Forest Hills : 11/30/2015 3:12 pm : link
is that the Pats are not that talented either. They do have Tom Brady but look at that offense. The OL is patchwork. Top 3 wrs now out. Dion Lewis out. They have a few impact players in Gronk, Chandler Jones, but they are not an elite team.

Watching them play, I didn't think they were a Superbowl team, just too many injuries, too many holes. They just lost to Osweiler. Malcolm Butler was getting cooked by Sanders.

Pats are better than the Giants and Skins but not by a whole lot.

Skins won the TO battle and got some good calls by the refs. In this league, thats enough to turn the tide.
the 2nd best reciever on this team is Shane Vareen. The #2 pass rusher
BigBlueCane : 11/30/2015 3:18 pm : link
is Nikita Whitlock, someone who made the team as a fullback.

There in a nutshell is the problem.

The team is poorly constructed and its players are a poor fit for what coaches prefer and NEED as opposed to want.

That being said, I have more faith in Coughlin doing his job then I do anyone in the front office doing theirs (maybe Abrams is the exception to this).
Team is not good enough to
giantgiantfan : 11/30/2015 3:42 pm : link
overcome injuries. And its fair to blame both. Backups across the offensive line, no legitimate 2nd receiver, no run game, no pass rush. The Pats are good enough to overcome injuries, well, they might have lost one too many at this point.
You win some; you lose some
Colin@gbn : 11/30/2015 5:39 pm : link
Hey Eric: Welcome to the wonderful, wild, wacky world of sports where the great equalizing factor is that on any given day players and teams motivation, intensity - whatever you want to call - is different every game out. Its why a MLB pitcher can go out and pitch a complete game 2-hitter in one start but can't get out of the third inning the next time on the mound. Its how a PGA golfer, who shoots a 65 on Friday, scores a 76 on the exact same course on Saturday but then comes back and cards another 65 on Sunday. And what makes it all so hard to explain is that it is almost entirely a subconscious thing. Players don't decide they are going to play hard this game and not the next. But anyone who has every played sports at some competitive level knows there are days when everything is clicking and there are other days when you come out of the tunnel roaring to go but when you go to push off on the first snap your knees are just so much mush.

It is also something that coaches have little control over. Indeed, any time you hear a coach or players say 'we aren't taking these guys lightly' they probably already have. and it happens to everybody. Remember back in '88 when all the Giants had to do the final week of the schedule to make the playoffs was beat a mediocre Jets team that had alraedy been eliminated from the playoffs, but they were only able to finally take the lead with 2-3 minutes to play and then LT and that great D let the Jets slice and dice them in the final two minutes to a game-winning score with 37 seconds left. Sound familiar.

I can guarantee you that the 53 Giants yesterday (well actually 46) were playing just as hard as they did against the Patriots. In fact, Tony in Tampa probably nailed it best in that you had the Giants coming off an emotional hard-fought game against the Patriots in which for all intents and purposes the Giants beat the best team in the league everywhere but on the scoreboard - and then listened for two weeks to everyone who said that the Giants could play with anyone and would be a team nobody wanted to play in the playoffs - while the Redskins festered all last week following an embarrassing loss. In many ways it was the perfect storm for the Giants.

And when you come out flat as the Giants did all you can do is keep battling as best as you can hoping that a some point the 'mo' changes. Certainly, we've seen enough games over the years where one team completely dominates the 1st half and then the opposite happens after the break. In this one it just didn't happen early enough. The irony of this game, though, ultimately could be that its an indication not of how bad a team the Giants are, but just maybe how close they are to being a reasonably competitive group in that they could go on the road and play a stinker for almost 45 minutes, but still come within a play or two (or 60-90 seconds) of pulling it out. Time will tell.
