we should trade Grant + Calderon for Lawson in a "heartbeat" as recently as last week.
Re the Grants -- both just look the part of NBA rotation players. They need to get in a gym this summer like Lance Thomas did and just work on the shot. Grant's shot is not broken, it's just inconsistent. Get it consistent and he's Reggie Jackson (a player he was rightly compared to pre-draft). Jackson's shot didnt fall at first either. If KP eventually hits his potential (IMO, MVP candidate player), then a guy like Reggie Jackson is a huge piece. Look at the shit Dirk dragged to a Finals. A great defensive center and glorified roll players. Link - ( New Window )
I dont think any of the public tools have it. But Lance's O/D ratings for December are 121 and 109, with a +/- of +8.1. In November he was 100/113 and -10.5. Big turn around.
BTW, KOQ is 132/100 in December and +12.9. KP is 94/99 and +.3 in December. Melo 100/106, +.1. Lopez 119/109, -8.3 (weird? unlucky?). Since getting back in the rotation, KOQ has played like a star bench guy IMO.
that stat and our Grant. More important for a PG to shoot then a PF.
Need to worry? He will either take it on himself to get better, or he wont. Im sure the Knicks are guiding him, but invariable you hear about guys improving their shot in the offseason. That's when you fix consistency problems.
I dont understand why it often takes guys 3, 4, 6 seasons to spend that summer in the gym working on a jumper. He's got an agent, a brother in the league, a father and uncle from the league, Phil, Phish, Melo, and Lance. If he isnt being told on getaway day to make it the summer of 50,000 jumpers (literally) then fuck him.
way more often than not, they get the most out of players. Especially retreads.
I wish Cuban owned some of the teams I root for.
They get a lot of positive pub for the climate around the team. When teams like the Mavs and Spurs pick guys up I always assume it's going to work out. Didn't work with Rondo (and doesn't always work) but they have a strong track record.
I assume a bunch of teams would take a shot at him, but none had $12 million in players to swap for Lawson. I wouldnt give Lopez or Calderon+ for Lawson.
Though the problem remains. PG is a unique position. Most/many teams build an offense around the abilities of their lead guard. Putting aside his current suck, do you build an offense around Lawson, knowing that he could relapse? If you dont, are you dooming the experiment to failure? IMO he's going to need to reinvent himself as a non-lead guard. If he can be a plug-and-play type backup, the risk is lessened. It's maybe mostly an attitude/approach issue. But tougher due to his size.

As a waiver claim I see zero downside. What's the worst case? He comes in, drinks and is a bad egg and you drop him?
