Irvin: 'Everybody' taunts Beckham Jr. with 'gay slurs'

“He deals with it a lot. For some reason, everybody goes after him with gay slurs. He’s a different kind of dude. He has the hairdo out, he’s not the big muscular kind of dude. The ladies all love him. He’s a star. I wonder why people are going in that direction. It blows my mind. I told him he can’t let stuff that people say get to you,” Irvin said.

if they say "not that there's anything wrong with that" then it's not really a slur.

can we confirm if this is the case?
I'm sure it'll stop now that he's shown it doesn't bother him.

is threatening to end his career while holding a baseball bat followed by dirty shots to start the game. That it was an irrelevant practice squad player doing it makes it even more persuasive as if there is an agenda set by the team or by a group of guys on the team. I don't think anything would happen with the bat, but it's about the message, and given the NFL's long history of bounties, I don't know why Odell shouldn't take the threat seriously. It's not like Noman hasn't admitted to attempting to blind a WR.

It doesn't make what Beckham did okay, but I don't sympathize with the instigator either. We as a country understand adequate provocation so much that we are willing to mitigate murder. I don't see why football fans can't harbor two separate opinions with a shot in the middle of the game.

This makes soooooo much sense, I'm struggling with the fact that people don't understand it. Nobody's giving OBJ a pass - but he was driven to that point, repeatedly. Whether it fits the narrative or not, his provocation does count for something.

Do you really think anyone was going to hit him with that bat? If that happened, you would be talking about a lifetime suspension from the NFL and a visit from law enforcement. The Panthers had that bat for a motivational prop and went overboard with their stupidity by pointing it at him. Sometimes you have to realize that NFL players are young, emotional and dumb.

but the progression of 21st century thought in developed countries has been to equalize and otherwise legislate against sexual-preference discrimination and the NFL has been making a clear effort to appeal to a much broader base in the past few years, such as women, etc. In that regard, I'm surprised that the NFL would allow this type of continued activity to continue. After all, if Beckham was being taunted for being black or called a n****r, then presumably the NFL would come down hard on the offender. Why are other slurs any different?

The gay slurs and taunting, swearing will eventually leave the sport as it cleans up its image perpetually.

But honestly, these guys can often be heard dropping N bombs at each other and saying a lot of trash to each other constantly. The gay slurs shouldn't bother beckham whether he is gay or not.

If beckham really wanted to turn the tables and to get into their heads he would start hitting on players between plays... Now that would be hilarious.

it wasn't that anything would be done WITH the bat. But when an irrelevant practice squad guy who means nothing to the organization is in street clothes in Beckham's face with the bat, it sends a message that comes from more than just Norman. It wasn't that anything would be done with the bat, but I could see how it would lead to Beckham to think a little bit more on the idea that the Panthers were intent on trying to injure him-- especially with Norman's history and the history of bounties in the league.

Was it all talk? Perhaps. But I understand how it could get to Odell. Odell has to be better than what he was on Sunday, but everyone has a breaking point.

The homophobic slurs are a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

bother O'Dell is proof that he's not gay, I would think. Doesn't really matter and shouldn't. This is the NFL, players smell bad, say nasty things about your mom and make fun of your haircut. You retaliate by being the best WR in the league. That didn't happen Sunday. Maybe it will next time.

Panthers came in targeting OBJ and walked out undefeated. Brilliant strategy. Point Rivera. Let's hope Beckham grows up in a hurry because he's gonna see the same thing every week until he proves it doesn't affect his play anymore.

My point was more, if they make using the N-word a penalty why can't "faggot" be included in that? Why is the N-word so powerful but calling Patrick Chung a "Chink" or a suspected gay player "faggot" any different? I mean yeah I guess you need to draw a line somewhere but not sure why the N-Word is the only "really bad" word.

Just bc Mike Piazza knocked up a playboy model doesn't mean we all don't think he's still gay. Now, with that mess cleaned up.

It is NOT Odell's job to suss out the intent of someone threatening him while holding a baseball bat, especially after alleged threats of bodily harm to end his career. I'm having a hard time getting around the fact that the circumstances show a pretty clear textbook case of Assault when the practice squad player gets up on his face with a weapon.

They can go fuck their pre game ritual and the douche bags it's supposed to represent. I remember that punter swinging an axe in the locker room when Jack Del Rio took over. That was a motivational tool / should that be allowed on the field? What exactly is the motivation with a bat? Let's break some kneecaps? Lets fuck ourselves with the fat end? What? I just don't get it.

Next Knicks game I go to I'll be expecting Carmelo to come out of the locker room swinging a hockey skate over his head to LL Cool J's Classic "Mama Said Knock You Put" for good fortune.

You're still missing the point. No one has ever said the Panthers were going to kneecap him with the bat.

The verbal threat of ending his career with the bat as a prop most likely put him on the defensive since he knows that the Panthers DBs have been known to play it dirty on the field whether its Finnegan taking cheapshots (like last season) or Norman with his admitted attempt at eye gouging. If they want to hurt him, they'll take cheapshots against him on the field, which we saw from the get go with that body slam and several other late hits that some of the posters, who were at the game have mentioned.

He fucked up by taking it way too far, but if you are going to say that he shouldn't have been on the defensive, you are naive as shit.

I don't even care enough to pass judgement on Beckham or the Panthers here. To me they are both kind of wrong. But some of you are lost. You act like these players don't hear trash talk or don't hear threats or don't face the likely-hood of injury or vendettas. Lol...are you guys really that dense?

These guys face extinction every week! Every game. Every single time these WRs step on to the field the odds are some maniac wants to all but kill them. Most of the shit we don't hear about. Most of time shit stays somewhat calm or quiet but it's just like the dark city streets or back alleys--you might not see it, but it's out there.

BEckham needs to calm the fuck down and focus on two things: Helping his team win games and surviving the NFL battlefield.

Cmon guys...don't act like BEckham is the only WR to receive threats or feel threatened. It's going on all the time. We just don't know about it.

theres things in life u just dont do and the bat in the face is one of them. f#ck football at that point
