They obviously have made no offers out to anybody yet and are not happy with anybody that they have interviewed otherwise they would have. We're going to end up the folding to either McAdoo or Spags ...
was the favorite and locking this thing up by Monday we would not continue to scheduling interviews. In the end it can be Ben but i don't think he is the favorite like others think
When the giants fired fassel, they had a plan while keeping their options open. It seems more and more like they really don't have any idea of a plan and they are throwing darts at a dartboard on who to interview. I am just waiting for Jim mora jr, Dennis Erickson and Rob Ryan to be interviewed next.
I would be making sure I got Hue Jackson in the building
Yeah this record is truly abysmal. Of course he didn't win Super Bowls. If he had he would still be coaching ATL and not available. Amazed at how many people say to ignore McDaniels failue in Denver or hype Marrone's 9-7 one season in Buff and then blow off a guy who has two 13-3's on his resume Smith in ATL - ( New Window )
for someone with NFL head coaching experience, they have to look at Smith. He coached the Falcons to five straight winning seasons. He never had playoff success but his resume certainly should garner some consideration.

Very good point. Lets all stay calm. Sure there is nervousness, but lets not jump the gun.
through someone close to the Smith family that he was spoken to last year about the vacant DC position. It was never really reported widely but apparently he was coming here if Spags refused or didn't work out.
Also it's been told to me that the Giants like him and see a lot of the late collapse in Atlanta as more of a personnel issue than a coaching one. Kind of like a reverse 2015 Giants I guess.
I'll reach out to my source and see if I can drag anything out.
I want Coughlin here. But he's gone. The entire coaching staff is gone (unless Spags or McAdoo becomes the new HC). But, even with that, the team should be competitive next year regardless of who they hire. The OL is much improved. They have Eli and Beckham. Add another WR. Shore up the middle of the D and voila - the Giants are competing for the NFC East (admittedly they did that this year too).
Odds are that whomever they hire as head coach is a three year hire and isn't winning a SB. In fact, history tells us that the Giants will go through 3-5 hires before finding a coach that lasts 8+ years.
But that isn't necessarily all bad. It's sort of like having a remake every few years. There's ton to talk about. Lots to follow. Tons of hope that the new regime will actually get things right. I've lived through such times with the Giants. At least twice. And it isn't as bad as some might make it.
Tom's gone. Nobody knows coaching well enough to know whether or not the coach they hire is any good. And, as I said, the talent level is clearly going to be on the upswing, so anyone they hire is going to look good the first few years. And it will be exciting.
then TC interviews with the eagles and now we're told loser coaches are being interviewed. I now believe the Giants have been covering-up dysfunction for the last few years. If I were McAdoo I'd be pissed they're consideirng Smith when I'm right here waiting.
of following the Falcons fan forum. Georgia is football country and the hardcore fans live and breathe it. They never took to Smith. The game threads would be "how is he going to blow this one?" Never liked his body language on the sidelines.
I'd be happy with either McAdoo or Marrone. I'd even be willing to give Teryl Austin a shot.
on Smith. Was Jax DC for five years 2003-2007. 4 top 10 defensive rankings.
No idea whether he actually would be any good or not. I suspect there's some skeletons in this guy's closet because his name hasn't been mentioned prominently for HC jobs. But on the record alone, he merits an interview. The reactions here are comical.
It's accepted as fact by the general public that the FO
is a major detriment to success. Gotta wonder if these coaches looking to fill TCs shoes are looking for more control as a result and the Maras are balking.

Possible. Also possible that Mara and Reese aren't agreeing so they're looking for someone they can "collaborate" on.
This interview is like some kind of psychological game they're trying to play on the fans. They interview Mike Smith and we get all worried thinking he has a chance at becoming the head coach. But they're really just buttering us up to accept Marrone or McAdoo so we'll feel like "oh, this isn't so bad. It could have been Mike Smith..."
These candidates are really better than Coughlin? Holy shit.
B, name one coach "better" than TC, short of Bill B. I doubt the criteria is better than TC (although at this point someone might be), it is somebody different from TC. Whether it is philosophy, defensive approach, conditioning, or personnel, something was not or has not been clicking for 2 or 3 years.
IMHO..
but if Tom does go to the eagles I'll know how the old-timers felt when Huff was traded to a division rival. Simms was old and just retired, LT too so this TC possibility will be a kick to the testicles if it happens.
These candidates are really better than Coughlin? Holy shit.

That's what I'm saying. None of these guys hold a candle to TC. Spags, McAdoo, Marrone, Smith? Bullshit.
Unless they're biding their time for Hue Jackson and hope that the Steelers can somehow win on the road tonight. That's a hire I wouldn't mind.
Dude has won a lot of games. Most on this board are, like me, probably just cringing at the thought because of the bonehead decisions he made in the playoff game against the Giants in 2012.
I wonder if this is because the McDermott interview is probably
He was coach of the year 3 times.
Was very successful in Atlanta (especially compared to their history)
He had 2 bad years at the end, but is he worse than the other candidates?

Mark, he has been a trainwreck in many other games with game management. Also 1-4 in the playoffs.
Twice his soft Falcons were the 1 seed and lost. During Hard Knocks he whined his team isn't tough. He is just what a frachise who lost all credibility needs.
His GM (Demitroff)is worse than Jerry Reese.
He is a terrible game manager. Especially time outs and play clock
He could not motivate a man on fire to jump in a lake.
He does not know what a run game is.
He was coach of the year 3 times.

Only guy available close to the resume is Cowher. Me, I'd prefer a defensive minded coach. So none of the mentioned coaches is going to look exciting. There are no sure bets. But TC just didn't have it anymore, for whatever reason, I do think it was time for a change.
guy on my list. I would take a flyer on a college guy before I gave this guy the job. Just a horrible coach. I was actually comparing Coughlin to this guy at the end for all of the bad decisions made late in games.
when he took over. Their prior year record wasn't good but they had some players, especially when they added Matt Ryan who played pretty well as a rookie QB and Michael Turner in free agency (I think).
He rode a talented team to good records but got nowhere, and showed plenty of tendencies over the years to not manage clock and game situations well. It spiraled downward as the roster weakened, particularly the defense (which was his specialty).
Why would you want a guy who can't win with all that talent he has. I mean they arguably have a star player at ever position group. And not to mention top flight Asst coaches.
This is starting to point toward the Giants biding time
for the playoffs to start and a candidate they want to speak to becoming available.
Not sure if that lines up with the rumors, but between Saban in the college ranks and McDermott, McDaniels and Patricia in the NFL, the next week or two might make a bunch of interesting names available.
Maybe the Giants weren't thrilled by the conversations they've had to date, and want to hear some more people's take on the situation.
Doesn't it behoove the Giants to speak to as many names as possible? They get to hear what people roster wise & how they would tinker it, etc. The odds of them hiring Mike Smith are pretty low anyways.
And if they did hire Smith....I might just down a bottle of Jack Daniels like Belushi in 'Animal House'.
Why would you want a guy who can't win with all that talent he has. I mean they arguably have a star player at ever position group. And not to mention top flight Asst coaches.
They're 12-4 and they've been playing without their starting QB. What are you talking about?
he has been out of football for a year and needs his name to get circulated. I mean people are shitting on him and that's fine, but the guy did have 2 13 win seasons, 4 double digit win seasons and 5 winning seasons in 7 years. His winning percentage was .589. And, you want to talk about injuries, the Falcons were decimated by injuries the last two years of his tenure.
In 12 years here, Coughlin had 4 double digit winning years. 4. The difference between Coughlin and Smith is playoff success. That is not to say that is irrelevant or should not be counted, but I would reckon we could do a lot worse than Smith.

I truly believe that Saban wants the Giants Job. He has a lot to prove in the NFL and this is the best job available for him.
this is a job that hopefully is only open every 10-15 years. ...
Take a look at the coaches for the Giants over the past 50 years and you will see that it is a 3 year job much more often (3-4 times as often) as it is a 10 year job.
I don't think he is the guy I would want, but it is just mind blowing to me how people shit on someone on this board with a record like his. Odds are that he is a better head coach than anybody who has walked through our door so far to be interviewed
than Mike Smith. He had some very successful years in Atlanta prior to his last two when the defense was devoid of talent and the OL fell apart (sound familiar). Criticism of his record in the playoffs is fair, but it's not like Mike Smith was a bad head coach.
By a number of coaches. But the same people who use it as a final barometer conveniently leave out the 2 Super Bowl titles and 2 Afc Championship appearances.
posted re: his coaching records, last two years notwithstanding.
"blah" personality - you mean he is not a vivacious guy like Bellichek
I'm pointing out that, despite the stats and coach of the year awards and numerous job openings, no other team has shown any serious interest in this guy.
Belichick had the monotone but he always had an edge to him and was a player motivator. Don't see that in Smith.

By a number of coaches. But the same people who use it as a final barometer conveniently leave out the 2 Super Bowl titles and 2 Afc Championship appearances.
whats the difference between Coughlin's record in Jax and Smith's record in Atlana? One championship game and Smith made it to the divisional and lost to Rodgers and the Packers at home. the only difference you an say about Coughlin is that he built a team from scratch, but to criticize Smith like he is some JAG is absurd. If Smith is JAG, so was TC
copycat league - notice how a few hot names are being courted by everyone. does that mean they are only capable guys? I don't see how - none of them has ever been a HC, it's all speculation.
I think it's just such a crap shoot. I certainly have no clue who should get the job, I just dug around and found enough preliminary info to suggest his name belongs in the hat as much as anyone else's -
of the team we blew out in the playoffs during our last run, couldn't even score a single offensive point (there only points came on an Eli safety). Terrible defenses. Just no.
actually his defenses got better for most of his tenure
Just got some word on this from my connection to Smith family.
Smith coming in for a "HC" interview but it's also for both sides to feel out the possibility for him to become DC.
I'm guessing if he knocks it out of the park HC is on the table but he might best be suited as a coordinator, like Norv Turner or Wade Phillips.
I'm also told and take this for what it's worth - that Smith really likes McAdoo and would love to work either above him, below him, or alongside him.
Very interesting. There is so much going on here that we fans just have no insight on. We all need to stay calm.
What if this time next week it's Marrone as HC, McAdoo as OC, and Mike Smith as DC? I think the only position I would even question is Marrone as HC. And what if its McAdoo as HC, Marrone as OC (which would be a promotion for him) and Smith as DC?
he wrote a book - a motivational type subject - he went on to say how he learned from his mistakes in Atlanta - He will be a very strong candidate with his interview
"NFL head coach Mike Smith lead one of the most remarkable turnarounds in NFL history. In the season prior to his arrival in 2008, the Atlanta Falcons had a 412 record .... Under Smiths leadership, the Falcons earned an 115 record in his first season and would go on to become perennial playoff and Super Bowl contenders earning Smith AP Coach of year in 2008 and voted Coach of Year by his peers in 2008, 2010 and 2012.
>You Win in the Locker Room First <(his book) draws on the extraordinary experiences of Coach Mike Smith
Or did he get his team to overperform in the regular season?
He would not be my first choice but I would be fine with him. Much better winning pct than Coughlin. Team also has floundered since he left, which suggests losing seasons were not his fault
RE: TCs regular season winning percentage will be bested

Giants scheduling former Falcons' HC Mike Smith to interview for their HC job, per league sources.
What do you mean ?
Shocking with the personnel issues and an aging QB
Quote:
It makes it seem like something else is going on.
What do you mean ?
In my opinion they are interviewing someone we have no idea about.(Cowher,Gruden or a Saban/Shaw). You just can't go from TC to Mike Smith
Smith in ATL - ( New Window )
I don't want him, but I know a lot of people blame it on Thomas Dimitroff. Including Brent Grimes wife who definitely has a good idea of what goes on.
Several articles out there that they disagreed on how the Falcons should be built. Well Smith isn't there so Dimitroff must be doing something wrong.
Now if Coughlin becomes the coach of the Eagles, then I will be livid just because I couldn't stomach the sight.
Let the process work its course before we panic. Think how many of us were happy with the TC choice in 2004. I was admittedly on the fence.
"It's McAdoo"
"It's Spags"
Very good point. Lets all stay calm. Sure there is nervousness, but lets not jump the gun.
And relax, its just an interview...its called due diligence.
Pretty much

Go on...
Source confirms #Giants will interview Mike Smith on Monday. Defensive coach, 66-46 in reg season with Atlanta
This smells like 60s-70s to me.
I'd be happy with either McAdoo or Marrone. I'd even be willing to give Teryl Austin a shot.
Mike Smith would make me sad.

The other being Cowher who appears to be out of the picture barring a change of heart on his part.
I know I'm rooting hard for KC today. I just have a weird feeling about Bill O'Brien.

Team crapped the bed when the running game died. But to assert that they never ran well is inaccurate.
Given all the job openings, it's reasonable to ask why he has drawn so little interest. The answers for me are that:
a) there's nothing positive that stands out about him that he is going to bring to the table and
b) he has the negatives of bad game management decisions and a "blah" personality.
