Unlike many here, at the time, I did not think it was a big deal but BBI was right: it turned out to be a very costly decision. Parker had numerous back-breaking drops the first two games. If Jones is playing, Giants are probably 2-0 vs 0-2. The whole season likely unfolds differently.
And thought from his early career he'd ultimately be the Giants' greatest WR of all time.
But seeing the performance Eric notes, it's no surprise given the grand piano Nicks is lugging on his back. Injuries destroyed a promising career and it's painful to see.
should be viewed with Geremy Davis. He was sitting on a couch when we signed him, and got a game day jersey two weeks later against the Redskins. Davis had been with us since the draft, but was inactive for that game, and for the rest of the season. And that's true even though Davis plays ST, and Nicks doesn't.
It's pretty clear Coughlin had no interest in Davis, probably going back to the draft. If Nicks really was more deserving of starting, then that is an indictment of Reese, and maybe Mara as well. Mara said they thought about drafting Davis in the fifth round IIRC. He has also previously criticized Coughlin for not playing the younger players, including Jernigan. Coughlin of course would say that playing time is earned, and the players he refused to play, including JJ, never succeeded after leaving the Giants. But I wonder if Reese and Mara thought that Coughlin's refusal to play Davis was just another example of him not playing the players they drafted.
As far as Jones is concerned, he'd would have been with us if the Giants hadn't wrongly anticipated that Cruz would return shortly after the season started. They also overestimated what they could get from Randle. What a mess.
Tons of players want to play for other teams. So that's a poor argument.
You didn't need to be a psychic to see James Jones - even as a very, very ordinary WR - was out-playing people who made the team in the preseason. It's why so many BBI'ers were shocked when he was cut.
Looked like he was running in cement. I wonder if he needs to do what Strahan did late in his career and drop some serious weight. I know it's different positions but quicker and faster could help Nicks
How many snaps did he have? I'm sure if he was getting open Eli would've thrown the ball to him. Oh wait he did vs Philly on the final drive of the year and flat out dropped it
I remember a screen to Randle where Nicks was supposed to block. He watched two decenderz tackle Randle for no gain and didn't try to block either one.
How many snaps did he have? I'm sure if he was getting open Eli would've thrown the ball to him. Oh wait he did vs Philly on the final drive of the year and flat out dropped it
115 pass plays, 63 run plays. I agree, he wasn't getting open.
will be another area of need. This team needs either another solid #2 WR, at a minimum. Hopefully Cruz can give us something, but cannot be counted on. Davis is a JAG and will probably be brought in to camp to vie for the #4 or 5 WR position. Nicks is washed up and showed virtually nothing. Very disappointed because it would have been one less position to worry about, but boy did he look terrible. Lastly, Harris is at best a #3 or 4 WR, but showed me some skills this year.
We've had bad luck keeping our best receivers healthy.
& I am worried Victor might pack it in. He is a corporation and brand name now, who might decide that he no longer needs playing football.
In 12 years, Coughlin made 2 mistakes regarding personnel. Cameron Wake & James Jones. They had Wake in for a tryout the spring before he signed with the Dolphins. Jones would not have put up the numbers that he did this season for Green Bay, but he would have been very useful. All the blather on these message boards from guys who insisted they could cut down a team better than Tom.
On topic, Nicks dropped the last ball thrown to him as a Giant. Eli timed that gap perfectly between the corner and the safety. Sad end for a once great Giant.
And thought from his early career he'd ultimately be the Giants' greatest WR of all time.
But seeing the performance Eric notes, it's no surprise given the grand piano Nicks is lugging on his back. Injuries destroyed a promising career and it's painful to see.
The compartment injury is devastating and Nicks is lucky his leg wasn't amputated. That is how serious a compartment injury can be.
why was Jones #5 on our depth chart and not the clear cut #2? talent evaluation was TC's worst attribute, but some of the decision makers are still with the organization.
Derek Wake was a UDFA in 2005 when he tried out for the Giants as a D-lineman. He wen to Canada and played for a few years at LB before returning to US and signing with the Dolphins in 2009.
I don't think he tried out again for the Giants except the first time in 2005.
He plays DE for the Dolphins.
Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone who went from
don't think Nicks will even be invited to camp. This is a new regime. You bring somebody like that to camp, and he's just taking reps from a player you might want to develop. Cruz is going to have to restructure to come back, and might well be cut if there is any indication he's still injured, or hasn't regained his former form.
Hakeem Nicks

was signed late in the season and didnt know the playbook. I dont know what people were expecting from him.
that he could stay upright....
The guy is toast...he looks slower than the last season he played for us....remember all those catches he was going to make with Luck throwing to him?
But he did not have a good year in Indianapolis. Much as was the case this year with the short trial by the Giants, he was rarely targeted and apparently didn't do anything eye-catching when he was thrown to.
Of course, Luck had no need for Nicks to be a major contributor. He had his vets Hilton, Reggie Wayne and tight end Fleener. Nicks was only targeted 70 times, compared to 130 for Hilton and even 93 for Fleener.
Luck looked for Hilton like Eli looked for Beckham. He had a sensational season.
So the question is again did Nicks catch few passes because he was seldom targeted or was he seldom targeted because the he didn't have the confidence of the quarterback. When this happens in successive years with different quarterbacks you have to think about pinning it on the receiver.
Nicks might have value as a Fitzgerald type receiver who can go down past the sticks and use his size and big hands to snatch the ball out of the air. Nicks did nothing spectacular in the Super Bowl, but he caught 10 passes, seven of them for first downs.
In any event, we'll always have the Nicks of the 2011 playoffs when we pull out the DVDs to re-watch them. I'm sure that no one will be interested in watching the last six games of 2015.

I wasn't shocked. I was angry, and that was before the season started. Jones was our best WR in the preseason by a wide margin. He caught everything thrown his way, ran good routes, and even if not getting a ton of separation, he was the only WR using his body to shield defenders. He should have made the team and been the #2 or #3 WR.
As it is, if we opened with Harris as the #3 instead of Parker things may have gone differently also,
James Jones asked to be released

I'm not sure why nobody wants to accept this.
Because he knew he was down our dept chart. He could have been our #2 this season.
So, in other words, why didn't Jones and Coughlin consult a psychic ahead of time?
its not crystal ball gazing its educated guessing. Lotsa people are asked to make educated guesses in all walks of life and are expected to get a least a fair share of them right. Not sure the Giants were sucessful by that measure.
The person who has the real scoop on Nicks is Eli Manning,

He was an absolute stud for a while, just shocking how fast the decline has been

We'll never know
He did ask for release because he was the #5 receiver and Jordy Nelson just got hurt, so he knew the Pack would have him no worse than #3.

Thank you..he was not even targeted as much as he should have been. Camp will tell all...If hes asked to attend.

I would have bet serious $ in '11 that he was going to own EVERY Giants receiving record when he called it quits.
If I recall, both Janis and Abrederis were rated pretty well when drafted. It's our crack staff of scouts and talent evaluators that can't find them!
Just thinking about Giant WR since Coughlin came in as coach
hugely quality receivers
EVERY SINGE ONE OF THEM have had shorten careers
Think about Amani Toomer played 12 YEARS and was effective until the end
Something terribly wrong with Tom Coughlin Strength and Conditioning
hopefully new Regime will clean house.
To those that say James Jones should NOT have been released, you do NOT know TC !

The odds are stacked against Cruz right now... we need to draft another WR this offseason
but at the time cruz's injury wasnt considered season ending
Just awful.
