I'm told former #49ers head coach Mike Singletary is interviewing with the #Giants today for their linebackers coach position.
"After he left San Francisco and settled in Minnesota, Mike Singletary looked in the mirror and saw what his wife had been talking about.
It was an epiphany-in-waiting. The sort of thing a wife tells her husband about over and over again and then one day the husband finally gets it.
Singletary, the fired head coach, stood eye-to-eye with the look his players, the TV audience and his wife had seen.
“I looked like I’m saying, ‘I hate you. I cannot stand you,’” he said.
He had every intention to communicate his belief in his players, that there was greatness within them. He had sent the opposite message.
“My body language had to change. My tone of voice had to change,” he said.
Singletary has been retooling his style because he wants to be a head coach again. For more than a year, he has studied all aspects of the game. He met with more than two-dozen lifer-type coaches and former players. He visited with strength and conditioning coaches. He has a former referee on speed dial.
These aren’t casual let’s-have-a-beer-and-write-up-a-scheme-on-a-napkin get togethers. These are daylong sessions, some of which Singletary films and then studies after the meeting is over.
Singletary doesn’t have to do this. He is the Samurai Linebacker. He is in the Hall of Fame and he’ll always be the defensive leader of the Super Bowl shuffling 1985 Chicago Bears. He makes between $20,000 and $30,000 for speaking engagements. He took a pay cut to get into coaching, but he views the profession as a vocation he’s unwilling to leave..." Link - ( New Window )

Mike Singletary could add his hard-nosed, no-nonsense mentality to the #Giants defense & additional accountability on the sidelines.
A former HC, the heart and soul of arguably the best defense of all time, not in it for the money or immediate advancement. Someone who knows the position that wants his guys to be the best in the game for the sake of helping the team win.
I can't think of anyone I'd rather have on the staff.
throw some pads on him and send him out there, he might be the best linebacker on the sidelines even if he's pushing 60 years old. Tell Banks to get out of the booth too.
1. Linebackers Coach- to make our group a hard-nosed, effective unit again.
2. To stand by the bikes with those crazy eyes! "You dare to get on those bikes??? Let me tell you about me back in the day, boy! You played with body parts hanging off your body!!! You played in the cold! You played to win! You played for your teammates!!!! Now tell me son....Do you still want to get on that bike?

in a position coach. The question I have - is he a good teacher? I honestly don't know.
One thing is for sure - something has to change there. It's been too long since we've had a good LB corps. And that something doesn't have to be one thing - change the scouts, change the GM, the director of personnel, the coaches, the guy who washes the LBs laundry - change very last guy in the organization if you have to, but the Giants have to be able to put a halfway decent linebacker back out on the field again.
When you look at the awesome LBs the Niners had during their run Â
I wonder how responsible he was for their development. Would be an awesome get. Bowman, Willis, even Borland and Aldon Smith.
He would have been gone before Borland and Smith came along, but the point is valid for the other two. He was also the Ravens LB coach and that unit was no slouch either.
If the NYG were thinking of drafting LB this year, specifically Â
In the drafting of LBs. even when the Giants draft LBs their talent evaluations have not been very good. as god as the team has been in identifying WRs they've been just as bad at the LB position. Maybe a different perspective will help.
RE: To me, Singletary ticks off a lot of the boxes I'd want Â

He seems to be a great student, so that makes me hopeful he will be a great teacher.
But that article doesn't really explain what went SO wrong, what caused the melt-down, and all the subsequent "I hate myself" soul-searching. And that's a bit concerning, IMO.
He doesn't sound nearly ready to be a HC anytime soon.
Linebacker coach, OK. But it also wouldn't bother me if he didn't get it.

I remember seeing him coaching up the LBs at the senior bowl one year and looked to do a great job. However, that was a small sample so I cannot really have a true opinion.

I have no idea how honest/accurate the Football Life shows are - but there, it seemed as if he was micromanaging, involved at too low a level to be effective as a head coach (in other words, still seeing the field as if he were a position coach). He also had a problem with holding people accountable - he went too far. I think that's the downside of being a HoF LB, some stuff that he was capable of is just outside the realm of most player's ability.
He brings a number of positives for both the D and LB's along with our coaching staff. Mac now has 2 former HC's on staff and both on the D side of the ball. Let's Mac have overall control however he can still focus on the O side with Spag's and Singletary on the D side.
Hopefully MS will also have a say in the draft at LB position. I believe that is the most important piece to this potential hire.
over well to head coaches. You can be that ultra-intense, relentless figure as a position coach, but trying to be that guy as a head coach doesn't seem to have a very long shelf life.
I think Jim Harbaugh was that guy in SF, albeit a far better mastermind than Singletary was, and Harbaugh's act is grating and uncomfortable and exhausting.
and Jim Tomsula have. They obviously know each other well as they coached together. Tomsula is still looking for a job....although he's a west coast guy. And we need a dline coach.

Tomsula lives in California and has 3 kids. ....moving to NY would be a stretch , I would imagine.
on the possibility of a new hire for the Giants. I also agree and hope if they hire him they give him some new talent to work with and perhaps mold into greatness.
Sounds like a no brainer. Wonder if Spagnuolo and him know each other. Figure the DC would have a lot of input on this hire. One tough dude when he played. We can sure use that attitude on our defense.
He could only help our putrid linebackers. I thought Spags had the D playing with a lot of heart last season (obviously without much talent). Adding some talent and a guy like Singletary could really put some punch back into our defense.
If he is signed, I hope he still wears that stopwatch and crucifix around his neck.
I'm sure Carl Banks would merit consideration, no?
Carl's never coached. He's been a good analyst for Giants.com and works well with Bob Papa on Broadcasts, but coaching is a little different. The other guy that I would have considered however is Jessie Armstead who has been an assistant with the team on and off.
I want LBs who come out and hit people in the mouth Â
was Patrick Willis LB coach and he was the best MLB every year he played in the league which was a long tome 2007 - 2013 ( I believe). A real game changer. Hope this happens.
have a leader on the D that brings passion and heat.
Does it have to be a player?
I would say yes, it does.
What's being overlooked is the part that coaching plays in personnel acquisition. If you have a good position coach, he's going to be useful to those scouts in finding players who will excel at the next level, and can fit in to the system.
How many times has it seemed like we're drafting guys that just don't fit? I don't know how much of it is the coaches and how much of it is personnel, but when you get a position coach who has done well in the league and plug him in, if it's still not working you know where to point the finger next.
Singletary but we still need the damn players. How much better would our unit have been this year with him? Probably better, but he can't make them run faster...

No - but the coaches are involved in the personnel acquisition side of things - so hopefully your top flight LB coach can point out to the scouts exactly who he hopes to get in here.
I always felt he didnt get enough credit for those 49er teams. Although his antics ran thin, i believe he learned from them and think he can be a successful coach.
Not sure if this link has been posted, but interesting look at him. Singletary - ( New Window )

I think he's getting good advice and he's going about this the right way. He'd like to be a HC again someday. The path for him to do so is to get to the DC level and excel, and hope someone else gives him another shot.
He's not going to get a coordinator job after 2 years away from the game, regardless of whether he was a HC or not. So take the position coach job, hope for a promotion, and work your way back up to HC.
this guy was able to reach a big time star like Ray Lewis, he should get the attention of the Giants LB corps.
I dont think he will tolerate sloppy play from his unit. They will tackle, that I am pretty sure about.
oppose the 49ers drafting Patrick Willis in the first round?
I am a fan of this hire from a superficial level, as we don't have any insights as mere fans. He brings a credibility, experience, and toughness that that our linebacking corps has lacked for a very long time.

Paul, that's with ANY hire and why I'm incredulous at times with some of the "absolute" and "emphatic" insights into prospective coaches, GMs, etc
Singletary told me that while he has had some conversations with teams, he has not had any formal interviews, and has not been offered any positions as a defensive coordinator over the last two years that he turned down. “I didn’t want to be a linebacker coach again. I’ve been studying my tail off since I left San Francisco to become a coordinator at the very least, and hopefully become a head coach,” said Singletary. “When that didn’t happen, I began to work that much more, visiting coaches and learning everything I could possibly learn, primarily on offense.” Mike Singletary, Only Coach Fired Between 2010 and 2012 Not in League Last Year, Wants Another Shot - ( New Window )
gets him back into NFL.
Maybe his fire and reputation sway a FA LB to sign here, knowing a) we need LBs and 2(j/k) b)he will learn how to see plays the way MS sees the plays.
If he can stay healthy, he may turn Dennard into all that we have expected of him.

My thoughts exactly.
Then took TE Dave Young in the second. Young would be with the Giants 1 year and out of the league 2 years later.
Singletary, Howie Long, Rickey Jackson were all still on the board at that pick.
That was good. How about that Brian Billick quote:
"What they hired you for, they will fire you for."

He's a very good LB coach. Would also provide some heat on Spags to get the job done as DC.

I take it that he means that the Giants would have someone qualified and in place that could possibly take over as DC if Spags would fail

you do need 3 good man cover corners and a good safety.
I am suggesting the true DE as opposed to the old stud LB due to increase in OT size since 85.

I definitely agree with this thought.
If anyone saw A Football Life, MS has been dedicating himself to learning all about football, on both sides of the ball.
