NFT: Who is the greatest American band ever?

Headhunter : 1/21/2016 8:27 am
Read a poll on CNN and I stunned by some of the rankings. So I ask, who is the greatest band America has ever produced? Not talking live or studio, just the greatest band made in America

The Byrds all the way
Uncle Frank : 1/21/2016 2:14 pm : link
Basically brought psych-rock, country-rock and singer-songwriter genres to the mainstream, while at the same time writing some of the finest power-pop and folk-rock going. Had a terrific stable of songwriters, including Gene Clark, David Crosby and Gram Parsons. Legendary Bands like CSN and The Flying Burritto Brothers came about only due to the depth of The Byrds talent pool.

When it comes to the top rock bands of all time, British bands easily top American bands -

Rolling Stones
Beatles
The Who
Led Zeppelin

Heck, even Queen

And all of those bands are rooted in American Blues and R & B.

Yup, agreed, but so do a lot of the American bands mentioned.
If we are talking North American bands

Only if you limit yourself to rock.

America kicks the world's ass when it comes to swing, jazz, funk, soul, blues, R&B, hip-hop, bluegrass, rap, and zydeco bands.

Too many boring old white guys around here. (Said the old white guy who is boring outside of his free jazz hobby.)

Allman Bros are up there

Bon Jovi??? Cut me a fucking break. Springsteen has pieces of Bon Jovi in his STOOL.

The Allman Bros influenced so many groups...

Don't forget Chicago. They're huge ... tremendously accomplished musicians who could ROCK.

Guess Who deserves to be on the list.
Santana beats the fucking snot outta Bruce
schnitzie : 1/21/2016 3:28 pm : link
Carlos' music was so much more innovative and important, and he's been around forever.

Shit he blew up Woodstock! He's continued to evolve and remain relevant. Santana is phenomenal, really.

Of course. I hate these types of lists because there are never any criteria. Absent any criteria, words like "greatest" and "best" really mean something closer to "your favorite."

The Guess Who are Canadian. If they get on the list then the real answer is Rush.
I prefer Santana to Bruce as well
AP in Halfmoon : 1/21/2016 3:36 pm : link
He's one of the greatest but I don't think of Santana as American. The Allman Brothers and Crosby Stills Nash and Young would also rank at the top of my list but again Young and Nash aren't Americans.

BTW, who cares where they're from. Great music is great music.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Maybe not the greatest but deserving of being discussed.

Pretty sure that Young is Canadian.

And Nash is British but they are still an American band.

Exactly. I consider them an American band and to me, they are the greatest - great songs, great harmony and Stills was amazing on guitar.

The Wrecking Crew.
manh george : 1/21/2016 4:47 pm : link
Not even close.

Quote:
The Wrecking Crew's members were musically versatile but typically had formal backgrounds in jazz or classical music. The talents of this group of "first call" players were used on almost every style of recording including television theme songs, film scores, advertising jingles and almost every genre of American popular music from the Monkees to Bing Crosby. Notable artists employing the Wrecking Crew's talents included: Nancy Sinatra, Bobby Vee, the Partridge Family (group), David Cassidy (solo), Jan & Dean, the Mamas & the Papas, the 5th Dimension, the Association, the Carpenters, Glen Campbell, Cher, John Denver, the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, the Grass Roots[9] and Nat King Cole.

The record producers most often associated with the Wrecking Crew are: Phil Spector, who used the Crew to create his trademark "Wall of Sound"; and Beach Boys member and songwriter Brian Wilson, who used the Crew's talents on many of his mid-1960s productions including the songs "Good Vibrations", "California Girls", Pet Sounds, and the original recordings for Smile. Members of the Wrecking Crew played on the first Byrds single recording, "Mr. Tambourine Man", because, with the exception of Roger McGuinn, Columbia Records—namely, producer Terry Melcher—did not trust the musical competency of the band's members.[10] Spector used the Wrecking Crew on Leonard Cohen's fifth album, Death of a Ladies' Man.

The Byrds are a great call
Cruzin : 1/21/2016 4:49 pm : link

The only way they are from UK is if that means the University of Kentucky. The Byrds are all Americans.

Carlos Santana is Mexican.
The Guess Who are Canadian.
Neil Young is Canadian, Graham Nash is British, so when someone asks " no one said CSNY" on a greatest "American" band list, it's safe to assume if 2 of the 4 members aren't American, they are not included.

Bruce Springsteen is probably the most down to earth megastar there is, how anyone could call him phony is beyond me. Springsteen suffers from depression and became a workaholic as his answer to deal with that affliction. He's as original as they come, a true street poet that rivals Dylan as a voice of the people.

Love me some Carol. Hip without trying.

I still say Beach Boys, especially because of sales and hits, but...

Weather Report had the greatest musician ever. That counts for something.

lol - that's quite a standard, not sure I can agree on that - but I agree that Jaco was the best bass guitar player ever and an otherworldly musician. I watch the video of him with Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker and Don April - the Shadows and Light band - a few times a week. Now that was a band! But Mitchell is Canadian so they're out.
