Very unfortunate to hear.

Is he the youngest player to have been known to be afflicted? If I were a current player, I would think long and hard about retirement after suffering my first concussion...

It's possible that his experience playing in the NFL lead to the addiction. Sad all around.

"Last week, representatives from Boston University and the Concussion Legacy Foundation notified the Sash family that C.T.E. had been diagnosed in Tylers brain and that the disease, which can be confirmed only posthumously, had advanced to a stage rarely seen in someone his age."

Very sad.
His brain was very similar to that

Of junior seau. Seau was 43 and sash was 27. So sad and terrible. How can this game survive? And the better question is should it?

Ben in Tampa : 1/26/2016 7:20 pm : link
This is a multi billion dollar business, so there will be big money in developing tech that can prevent concussions/brain damage/CTE. For example, one of the primary doctors who discovered CTE is working on a neckband that mimics the capability of a woodpecker.

There will be many attempts at a solution. If they can't find one, yeah, it's probably the eventual end of the game.

From the linked article ...
Josh Sash, eight years older than Tyler, said his brother sustained at least two concussions in high school, one documented concussion in college and two with the Giants, including one in the Giants playoff victory over the San Francisco 49ers that earned the team its berth in the Super Bowl after the 2011 season. [...]

Those concussions are the ones we definitely know about, Josh Sash said. If youve played football, you know there are often other incidents.

but are there any documented studies revealing the prevalence of CTE in the general public?

I'm not trying to minimize CTE but there is so much unknown about this disease that it's scary. We can only diagnose it postmortem, we have no clue what the symptoms are, no clue how to prevent it. The first real breakthrough was identified only a decade ago.

Is there any real indication that CTE doesn't exist in everyone on some level while more pronounced for athletes of contact sports?

The hard reality is that the majority of the guys playing big time college and then NFL football are not growing up rich and will never stop doing whatever it takes - including crushing hits - to make it. Like boxing, MMA, even jockeys - when there is a way out you take it no matter what the odds are against you and what the negative health factors might be. And if you have ever been around youth football in a poor area or a football crazed area, you know those leagues are not being run or coached or parented by overly educated people and these studies are never going to impact that level. Like every dangerous sport, the suits will continue to get richer and the talent will continue to be thrown away when they are no longer needed.

I was a marginal Grammar and High School player and while never being knocked out in a game, I remember at least a half dozen times where I had the "white flash" on impact and seemed to become conscious a second or two later. I don't know how players make it through 12+ years of playing HS, College, and a brief NFL career unscathed. Some will, my guess is the vast majority won't.
Towards the end of the 2011 NFC Championship game
mstyles22.0 : 1/26/2016 11:07 pm : link
There was a special teams play where Sash got knocked out COLD and stayed in the game. Multiply that over his playing career, college and high school...who knows how many instances like that there were.

Scary stuff.

Completely agree. Its not like all of these guys are deciding between being a doctor or a LB. Most are trying to change the direction of their lives and will do whatever it takes.

That will quickly impact the player flow downward and upward.

So much for the Old Cosell Rant, "The Knee!!!...ALWAYS The Knee!!!". The Orthopedic impact of the game is now a deep after thought to the severe Brain Trauma that is much more common to players at all levels.

I recall reading that when it was announced that Glenn Campbell had Alzeimer's, some people harkened back to an alcohol relapse and related crazy behavior he had many years earlier, and wondered if it could have been the very early symptoms of the disease.

From what I have read, it seems quite likely that doctors will eventually be able to fully diagnose CTE in living patients. I wonder how that changes things.

I'm trying to imagine what tech solution will prevent the brain from moving forward upon violent impact. Even improvements in helmets, so far are not able to prevent the brain from moving and colliding within the skull.

You have to wonder how many active players have this same condition.
Two things:
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 1/27/2016 6:22 am : link
It will be mothers who learn about CTE and refuse to let their kids play that will lead to the downfall of the game. Bennet Omalu, the pathologist who discovered CTE, was quoted in a recent interview in response to the question "What percentage of NFL players will suffer CTE, in your estimation?" Omalu said, "100%."
"What?" said the interviewer.
"100%," said Omalu. He suggested that there will be a range in terms of degree, but everyone will suffer from it to some degree.

Can't they do that now with a brain scan, or isn't that sophisticated enough to detect CTE?

even gymnastics, figure skating, hockey, basketball virtually all sport have there blows to the head.
How does sample bias play into this?
mushroom : 1/27/2016 7:58 am : link
There are studies out there (Loyola) that bring into question CTE and concussions. The vast majority of the brains examined were from subjects who were exhibiting major problems. Very few from "healthy" individuals with similar concusion histories. Also there is concerns that most retired players live longer than the general public and some brain changes may just be from the aging process. Regardless, the NFL (even if for its on self interest)should stridently look for ways to reduce concussions

Blows to the head are part of the game in football...lumping in those other sports is silly....Hockey is the only sport that comes somewhat close with checking. And checking is not a part of the game at many levels.

You can't be serious. It's a matter of risk. Football exposes players to far more risk of head injury than those other sports.
The #1 sport
mushroom : 1/27/2016 8:46 am : link
On a percentage basis for concusions is Girls Lacrosse. Now many more play football so there is many more concussions.
Focusing on concussions is all well and good
Rob in CT/NYC : 1/27/2016 9:19 am : link
But virtually every player on the field takes some jarring impact on EVERY play - no other sport can make that claim - hockey, lacrosse - relatively length periods of skating/running with a big hit interspersed.

Its the cumulative impact of sub-concussive hits that does the damage, and no sport (other than boxing) causes its participants to see such a large number of such hits.

I don't believe it can. I'm unaware of a way to have an employer get out being sued after hiring employees for a job they know will kill them or shorten their lives substantially.

Once the liability becomes too great and the money can't be made from it the game will disappear.

So football only started causing concussions while Goodell was commissioner? Guess Paul Tagliabue is off the hook in your world.

I wonder how many Soccer players get CTE? The doggone ball is pretty hard and to do a header on some of those long passes and corner kicks has got to hurt. Don't tell me it is infrequent. To get to be as good as those guys takes hundreds of balls of the noggin in practice from the time they are little kids.

I think concussions are an issue, mainly at the youth level, but its from contact with other players, not the ball.

But I doubt it gets to the level of CTE that NFL players are experiencing

I have read several places that football is worse. You get full body force followed by rapid decelleration from both sides of the collision. F = MV. You get an awful lot of MV out of these collisions, and helmets don't eliminate that to any significant degree.

As far as detection in living individuals, MM, they were just about there in 2015, according to the link, but I haven't read anything yet which confirms that this can be done with confidence.
