I have learned Greg Bird is going to miss all of the 2016 season. Going for shoulder surgery tomorrow #Yankees
one of those things that most of us were really looking forward to watching this year, even if it wasn't going to be full time. Hopefully it won't linger.

Yankees say Bird's injury is a reoccurrence of a right shoulder injury sustained in May of 2015. More emphasis on healthy 2016 for Teixeira.
So why all the whining? Tex and ARod blocked him anyway.
I have no idea what he did to his shoulder, but so long as it fixes the problem and he is ready to go next spring, why worry about it. He will have a clear path to 1B in 2017.
On a related note, I guess that Tyler Austin just made the AAA roster as the 1B there. Probably his last chance- so see what you got.
Probably because we're not thrilled with the idea of our future 1B having a bum shoulder? Who knows how he'll come back from this?
You ARE aware that it is a right shoulder injury for a left-handed hitter, right? He may throw righty, but for a 1B, he just has to have a good enough arm, not a great one.
He is not a pitcher, so this is not as big a deal.

Bird's injury opens up a roster spot for Refsnyder. Dustin Ackley primary backup at 1B with Ref backing up Starlin at 2B
Where do people get this nonsense- BIRD WAS NOT GOING TO BE ON THE MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER, PERIOD. It does NOT open a ML roster spot for ANYONE. Now, it DOES open a spot in AAA.
Is I believe this will count as a MLB DL so its a year of lost control when he likely would have at least started in AAA(unless I am wrong about that).

Actually it's a pretty big deal when a 23 year old has to miss the entire season because of a shoulder injury, no matter what position he plays.
that's as much a concern as the fact that it's his front hitting shoulder. Those injuries can hurt a player's power for long after surgery (e.g. AGon, Kemp) and Bird wasn't some great defensive player so if his power is affected by this, it really sucks.
And yea he was going to start in AAA but given how injury-prone Tex, ARod and Beltran are he was bound to get some MLB playing time this year.

Out of ST you're right, it doesn't change anything, but the odds of a healthy Bird being up by July 1, if only for 15 or so days at a time, were probably close to 100%.

Source:It's unlikely that Greg Bird will work his way back by the end of the 2016 season, but it's entirely not out of realm of possibility.
1) Is this a recurrence or is it the May 2015 injury only now being fully diagnosed and treated?
2) Either way, it sucks and points out the delicacy of the shoulder joint. I have long maintained it is the most delicate joint to injure, especially in sports. For most other soft tissue injuries today, athletes can generally return at or near 100%, provided they rehab properly. The shoulder, whether it be a separation, dislocation, rotator cuff, etc. seems to have a high re-injury rate and never seems to be 100% afterwards.
3) If Teixeira stayed relatively healthy, this wouldn't even register much. But, he hasn't done that for several seasons. Even still, at least entering the season, I can't see how Bird would have been on the roster blocked at 1B and DH.
4) For 2017, though, this is a big deal. His recovery needs to be monitored carefully. There is now a good chance he won't be ready for the start of the 2017 season.
F'n shame. Kid is a star in the making. Now has to take a year off. Â
And speaking from experience, labrum injuries are not the easiest things to recover from. That right shoulder is all about extending through the swing; hopefully he can do so after rehab without it hurting. The pins in my labrum made it impossible for me to swing with the same extension in golf and robbed me of a lot of power.
the Yankees haven't had much better luck with injuries than the Giants Â
I always wonder why stuff like this pops up right before the season. Like, did they know and they were thinking rest would help? It's just so frustrating as a fan.

to add a hitter? Betances finished 15th in the AL Cy Young, and right now, he's a seventh inning pitcher, which to me is nuts, even with the Yankees potentially ragged rotation.
Trade?
RE: So, do the Yankees trade one of their three back-end relievers... Â

Why? To replace a guy who would be a backup at best this season?
I was looking at MLB's top 100 prospects list and shaking my head. Â
We are all euphoric over having 3 players listed among the top 60, which is certainly good compared to the recent past. But it's frustraing look at how good the Red Sox, Dodgers, Jays, Astros, and Cubs are at developing young players. The players they signed off the back of a truck are out-hitting our 3M bonus babies, and their low-round HS talent gambles flourish while our college safe-bets can't hit their weight....
I know, I know, I am exaggerating. But it's beyond me why the Yanks can't poach front office talent from these organizations...
sooner if Tex or A-Rod broke down or faltered. We're talking about a six-month, 162 game season. And he's going to miss all of it? His HR/AB is irreplaceable. Teixeira & Rodriguez are 2 antiques. Very slim odds either lasts through all six months. They can move some guys around defensively but nobody will supply the power. The rationale that he was going to be sent out anyway is way too simplistic. He was next guy up.
Hope he recovers quickly and thoroughly. He shouldn't lose power with a torn right labrum. His 3-6 might suffer but the first baseman usually has the worst arm of anyone on the diamond.
Every year the Sawx are supposed to have a fantastic farm system, but what have they actually produced? Betts looks like a good players, Bogaerts can hit but isn't much of a shortstop, JbJ is a joke, Blake Swihart got a lot of press but wasn't any better than John Ryan Murphy. And they haven't developed a good pitcher since Jon Lester a decade ago.
but might net an extra draft pick. Now they can tender Teixeria and not worry as much if he accepts.
Why do people rush to show how little they know about labrum injuries?
The standard recovery period for a FULL recovery is 12 months, though some can come back faster.
Keep in mind that Bird played through this injury since last May- so he will know how to adjust post surgery. There is no reason to even consider Tex for 2017- maybe a Garrett Jones type of vet caddy to play once in a while, but nothing more than that.
it sure didn't look like it affected him later in the year. Or did playing through it cause the complete tear?
I mean, I hate knee-jerk MRI's, but sports teams really need to send players out to one even after a hang nail.
And the Yanks have the worst luck ever, along with the Giants. The select few prospects we have who manage to hit their weights always end up injured.
This could rob Bird of his power long-term, hopefully not.
It could Rob Bird of his ability to consistently swing the bat well, let alone with power.
Look, this is NOT the crisis that the knee-jerk reaction crowd here is making this out to be. Bird is a lefty batter who is having RIGHT shoulder surgery.
Just to give people a point of reference on how this impacts hitters, the Indians' 3rd round pick last year had labrum surgery in January 2015- was back playing with his college team in 2016 and played well enough to be drafted and play as a 3rd round middle INF- a position where you DO need arm strength.
WTF are you talking about? My point is that coming off the injury it would be smart to tender Teix and take the draft pick if he has a good year and hope he leaves. If he accepts it's only one year and insurance since Bird will have missed an entire season. I'm no doctor but here's what i know about Bird's injury. If it's just a repair there should be no long term issues, although Bird seems a little injury prone for someone so young. Back and Shoulder problems at 23. But if it's a partial removal of the labrum instead of a repair that's a big red flag going forward.

You don't know when to stop digging when you are in a hole do you. Now you are desperately flinging around increasingly implausible scenarios in a futile attempt to maintain that you somehow right.
First, after watching Tex flail through NUMEROUS seasons marred by injury, he is suddenly healthier than Bird? Right. Strike One.
Second, the Yanks are not going to tender Tex- he WILL accept if offered because he isn't going to get $16M elsewhere with his injury history. If he accepts, he is NOT "insurance"- he will play- which means that Bird is blocked because Tex has 1B and ARod is DH. Strike Two.
Finally, you are now just plain making up "what ifs" to make a case that doesn't exist- now it is "partial removal of the labrum"- come on, you are peddling fantasy now. Strike Three. You're out.
That's actually not the worst idea ever. Granted he's a piss-poor fielder at both positions.

Anyone know what the May 2015 injury was? Did Bird spend time on the DL in 2015?

Yeah he missed almost a month, from 5/7 until 6/4/15.

He missed about a month with a shoulder strain in the minors last year. According to the team he felt it again during offseason workouts.
