Giants Draft Prospect to Keep an Eye on: DeForest Buckner

area junc : 2/3/2016 10:33 am

6'7" 300 lbs. 22 years old.
A freak. In the mold of the intimidating DL's we used to have. Played 5T in Oregon's 34. Strong as an ox - long arms and huge powerful hands. Physical and smart. Despite his size he looks and moves like a Defensive End. Noted leader who received big credit from his coaches for making sure his teammates were ready. "Great at that," according to his position coach. The entire D was on his shoulders.
Considered a better prospect than Arik Armstead who went 17th to the 49ers last year and looked good.

Stats
2015: 83 tackles, 17 TFL, 10.5 sacks, 5 PDs,
2014: 81 tackles, 13 TFL, 4 sacks, 4 PDs, 1 FF

At first glance projecting to the Giants you'd pass right over this guy (34DE) but he fits nicely into Spags multiple-front D and seems to check all the boxes we might be interested in.
The key question is
JonC : 2/3/2016 10:36 am : link
do they project him as a legit pass rushing threat on the edge in a 4-3. If not, and it's a legit question, then I don't think he's an option at #10.
I like him. A much better pass rusher than a year ago.
yatqb : 2/3/2016 10:36 am : link
Has come a long way. PAC-12 DPOY.
Similar base projection to Arrington
JonC : 2/3/2016 10:38 am : link
definitely will be watching to see how he projects as a 4-3 ER.
Where does he fit?
The_Boss : 2/3/2016 10:38 am : link
3 tech DT? If he were 25 lbs lighter he'd fit as a DE in the NYG paradigm.
He looks like Chris Canty.

Leaner and quicker.
He didn't pop off the screen in what little I saw of him...
Dunedin81 : 2/3/2016 10:42 am : link
he could be an end or a 3-technique at that size, potentially very good at either. He's a solid prospect in a 4-3, even if it looks like he's a better fit as a 5-technique based on his measurable.
I mean,
Curtis in VA : 2/3/2016 10:44 am : link
can we just move to a 34 already?
No opinion on the player, but most of the mocks I've seen

have him going higher - is he a good bet to even make it to 10?

We'd probably need both Wentz and Goff to go in the top 9.
How strong is he?
est1986 : 2/3/2016 10:46 am : link
Can he put up 35 reps? What will his 40 time look like? To me he looks a lot like Leonard Williams, as far as his frame, haven't seen him ALOT but I do remember he got snaps as a lead blocker in a goal line situation other than that I don't remember seeing a whole lot out of him though.
I have no opinion on him either
AP in Halfmoon : 2/3/2016 10:46 am : link
but that's the type of player/position I hope they target at 1.

I think he's a 3-4 DE, but if he's on the board, he's my leading candidate for the Giants at #10. I think they'll just fall in love with his size and production, like they did with JPP.

He's mostly a bull rusher right now. He needs better pass rush moves. Guys that tall also typically have problems bending the edge, and OL can get under their pads.

Here is a good review of him, including his lack of success against Conklin of Michigan State.

Link - ( New Window )
I think he could play in any defense
BigBluDawg : 2/3/2016 10:50 am : link
But watching him his quickness reminds me of Mo Wilkerson, who seems to be on everyone's offseason wish list.
Maybe he will smoke some Weed
est1986 : 2/3/2016 10:56 am : link
And we can get him at 40.

Doesn't have the bubble butt or thickness through the chest of Wilkerson. I'm not sure that there's a great comparison to him in pro football...he seems unique in how he carries his size and weight. More like a basketball player, imo.
Another thing to consider is
JonC : 2/3/2016 10:58 am : link
the lack of success many of these front seven Oregon prospects have had in the NFL. They're generally very raw and underdeveloped when they leave school.
He's more Calais Campbell
JonC : 2/3/2016 10:59 am : link
with more AA.
Perhaps
LakeGeorgeGiant : 2/3/2016 11:07 am : link
Buckner is a guy Spags could play inside or on the edge like Tuck?
I don't think
ryanmkeane : 2/3/2016 11:09 am : link
the Giants brass would be interested in this guy. Then again, you can't fault the production and measurable. Just didn't pop off the screen for me. I watched Louisville a few times this year and Rankins was destroying people in the backfield. He's a guy I'd take over Buckner.

Someone mentioned earlier that he isn't very flexible or bendy and if thats true then he won't be effective the same way Tuck was. Part of what made Tuck so effective was that he had great flexibility and balance. You could knock him around and he'd never lose his balance. He'd just keep coming.
Spags plays a lot
area junc : 2/3/2016 11:12 am : link
of 30 fronts so he'd be playing a lot of 5T either way.
34, 33, 32, 31, 30 + a Joker. Spags showed it all last year
How does he compare to Leonard Williams?
robbieballs2003 : 2/3/2016 11:18 am : link
They seem similar in body type and ability to move around on the DL.
I'm impressed by his size and strength and athletic ability,
Ira : 2/3/2016 11:24 am : link
but I don't see him as a great pass rusher or as a great dt. Like the link says maybe he's a 3-4 de.
Buckner seems to be the Internet mock 'flavor of the day' for NYG.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/3/2016 11:33 am : link
From BigBlueView's summary of the latest mocks:
Quote:
Mocking The Draft
10. New York Giants: DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon
New York's pass rush needs upgrading, and Buckner is a great choice on the edge. He has unique length and athleticism, and finished last season with 83 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks....

NFL.com
Chad Reuter (four-round mock draft)
10) New York Giants: DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon
Building talent up front is a hallmark of the Giants, so grabbing a versatile defender like Buckner here makes a lot of sense.

Color me skeptical. Spagnuolo was gone when the Giants signed Canty. Spags eventually recruited Fred Robbins to St. Louis, and he seems to like some Hankins-scale bulk at both DT spots. As for DE, it's really hard for a man as tall as Buckner to turn the corner on a good pro offensive tackle. To justify the #10 pick for a 4-3 defense, I think he would need to blow up the Combine (and if he does, he probably won't last to #10)
I
AcidTest : 2/3/2016 11:41 am : link
don't think he's going to last to #10, but I'd be inclined not to pick him even if he does. But I do think his size and length will be attractive to the Giants.
Can't get a handle on him
Carl in CT : 2/3/2016 12:04 pm : link
Or Shawn Oakman. Both seem like boom or bust players.
Buckner
Dragon : 2/3/2016 12:13 pm : link
Is 300 but could easily be 310-320 and still shift along the DL depending on who you have to make him move inside. The move inside would not have to be permanent just on passing downs he might not be the JPP's of DE's but he could be something even better as a DE/DT.

Excellent comparison. I don't see the fit unless they go to a different style of 4-3 defense like the Seahawks played a few years ago.
just watch out
idiotsavant : 2/3/2016 12:49 pm : link
what happens if defensive linesmen are best value slightly lower, at, say, between picks 15 and 35, the giants draft another position at 10, due to clear value, then, by 40, all the good ones are gone, and we missed a chance to address a huge need with an unusual strength of the draft.

another trade down concept year, possibly with players like ncmdiche and billings and whomever out there
if one could trade down to 15 or so
idiotsavant : 2/3/2016 12:57 pm : link
draft ogbah AND billings or whomever, I have not looked really at players.

then start finding your linebackers and free safeties.

Every level of the defense is busted anyway. Might as well.
Calais Campbell
RAIN : 2/3/2016 1:00 pm : link
is a good comp. Not as strong coming out, but more flexibility. At DT, he won't be able to beat the double team yet.. which at #10 overall, don't know if that's acceptable.
Bruckner
stretch234 : 2/3/2016 2:23 pm : link
If he is available and Stanley is available where do you go
I don't see NYG burning another top 10 on an OT
JonC : 2/3/2016 2:41 pm : link
more likely they keep Beatty.
OT would have to be a no-brainer prospect
JonC : 2/3/2016 2:43 pm : link
otherwise they're going to prioritize DE, WR, CB and in that order, if possible.
Buckner can play both LDE and 3-Tech in a 4-3...
Torrag : 2/3/2016 3:25 pm : link
but he isn't the quick twitch pass rushers the Giants will prioritize first...if any are available @ #10.

Agreed. They have been pouring resources into the OL. If you look at the top 2 rounds of the past 3 drafts 3 of those 6 picks have been OL.
I'm not a scout
Glover : 2/3/2016 4:35 pm : link
or talent evaluator, but I would go with the guy who has shown the skills and techniques needed to play 4-3 DE. If Buckner is so much more talented than any other natural 4-3 DE prospect then it might be worth the shot that he can transition. Otherwise, dont draft a guy who isn't a natural fit for the position you want him to play.

Well, the Reverend Ernest David Kelley and his wife Clora, to start.

Dammit, Jim - I'm a doctor, not a 5-technique DE!
OK, DeForest was actually Bones's middle name.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/3/2016 5:01 pm : link
He was the most famous DeForest I could think of.

Anyway, drafting Buckner would recall Tom Brady's complaint during Super Bowl LXVI that, passing against Pierre-Paul, Canty, Tuck, Joseph and Umenyiora, he couldn't see DeForest for DeTrees. Or something like that.

Maybe his parents named him that because they liked to take walks in de forest.
