Tuck: Early retirement becoming a trend in the NFL

During an in-studio appearance with The Dan Patrick Show, Tuck was asked if early retirement is now becoming a trend across the NFL. His response likely won't make NFL commissioner Roger Goodell happy.

"Yea, it is," Tuck said. "I think because, one, the game of football and being an athlete gives you so many options outside the game. If we want to go do some other things, we have those options. It ain't like it used to to be. There's so many things outside of football.

"And now with all this stuff coming out about injuries and, you know, talking to the old guys and seeing what they're going through, it's something in the back of your mind. I don't think it makes the decision for you, but it's part of the decision process."

Justin Tuck: Early NFL retirement is a trend, considered Giants reunion if Tom Coughlin stayed - ( New Window )
11 seasons in the NFL?

is that really considered an early retirement? That is a sincere question .... he is not a QB.

I read all his quotes about other options these days .... but, after 11 seasons of crash, bang, boom at the LOS .... I would like to see the average career length for DL in the NFL. For RBs it used to be about 2.5 years ... but, that was before the game transition to a "pass first" league.
I think playing 11 seasons

as a DE/DT is a pretty good career
11 years is not

Retiring early.
Superbowl week sucks.
Where did Tuck say he retired early?
robbieballs2003 : 2/3/2016 7:47 pm : link
It was a general question about the current state of the NFL.
Don't count the years he's played
est1986 : 2/3/2016 7:53 pm : link
Count the years he has left in which he could still make a roster spot somewhere... If he has some years left in the tank and he's retiring than why wouldn't it be considered an early retirement? And I don't get how you guys got what you got out of this he was asked a question about the leauge in general not about himself..
It's a general question

asked to a retiring player. Not everything in the interview has to be about tuck personally.
I think that will trend will change in the near future

With the rapid advancement of technology and with the NFL now putting the health of its players as a top priority, I could easily see players' careers being extended. Wouldn't surprise me if we saw players play until their late 40's in 10-15 years from now.

True, but one would naturally assume it had some relevance to Tuck beyond simply retiring. It's fair one would assume they meant Tuck's retired early, which he certainly hasn't.

is 32. Not young...towards the end...but he could have squeezed in a couple of more years.
Better too early

than too late.

Great interview. Thanks for posting.

account the money some of these guys bring in, it's a sensible choice. After you've made your millions, and if you've had the smarts to invest it wisely, the only possible reason to stay would be a ring, IMO.
I looked up Patrick Willis

of it has to do with salary cap and teams feeling they have to play the younger guys before they hit free agency. NFL will be fine if players retire early. I don't believe it will happen. The game has bigger issues with all the rule changes and making it so offensive. I get more turned off by that than anything else.

watching 45-37 football games and saying this QB played great and blah blah. No the defenses blow and they can't hit anyone any more.
Unlike Strahan
Giants2012 : 2/3/2016 9:58 pm : link
Tuck had a lot of injuries and took a pounding playing inside, going against Guards and Tackles which were significantly heavier than he. Let's face it, he played a lot of DT.
With more and more

football players passing away at young ages and that many more living out their old age in poor health I am surprised more don't retire once they have achieved and played out one nice contract.

This is one thing where Tiki had it right although ironically it seems like he blew through his money since then.
seeing how beat up his body
Ned In Atlanta : 2/3/2016 10:18 pm : link
seemed to be toward the end of his tenure here, I'm actually shocked he squeezed out a couple of decent seasons in Oakland. Hope his body doesnt fail him in retirement. Dude seemed to take a pounding

How can you say that they now put the health of the players as top priority when they still have Thursday Night Football not allowing players to recover from the prior Sunday? Also they are not having games in London and considering other foreign sites with players' health in mind.

The top priority of the NFL is making every dollar they possibly can!

You lament the game going the way of the offense and defenses not able to hit people like the old days. But the ways of the old days are killing and disabling its players at the same which may eliminate the game altogether...

which would you prefer?
Only QB's can play forever

and get paid more then anyone else. All the more to cap the QB salary and spread the wealth more evenly
