Rodney Harrison on Cam: "I would try to take him out."

BlueGuy : 2/5/2016 11:17 pm
"Cheap Shot" Rodney Harrison is just as sick in retirement as he was when active in the NFL. When asked about Cam Newton and his 'Dabbing', he said the following.

"The defense is different from when I came in the league back in '94, the mentality is different," Harrison said. "You let a quarterback score, you let him dance, and you see it time and time again on film. If I was playing against Cam Newton, I would try to take him out. I would try to take him out."

Harrison added, "I would try to hurt him. I would go right for his knees. That's the goal. You want to knock him out -- that might be the difference between winning and losing the Super Bowl."

What a fucking cocksucker! Holy shit! How does NBC keep him on board after comments like those. Does Hot Rod have CTE? I'd hit you with my car if you targeted my knees and ended my season/career. I mean, shit, why not? One good hit deserves another. Right, Rodney?

Fucking loser.
What an ass...
j_rud : 2/5/2016 11:50 pm : link
I wish all the analysts/commentators/etc who play the "well things are different now, when I came into the league" card would just shut up about it already. Put that nonsense to bed. I bet you had to walk to practice 3 miles, uphill both ways, in the snow "back in your day" too. That's what these guys are starting to sound like, grandparents who lived through the depression telling their families how lucky they have it.

Play hard, play physical, make your presence felt. But it's never been the "status quo" to intentionally try to hurt another player. Maybe for a handful of guys but guess what? They're all assholes just like Harrison.
Him saying it is more outrageous
Glover : 2/6/2016 12:32 am : link
than the fact he or current players might do just that. These guys hit each other as hard as they can on every play. If it happens between the snap and the whistle what's the problem? We already know that many players are aiming for the lower extremities to avoid penalties and fines for hitting up high.

Rodney is a douche, and I think his opinions are often way off base, not on things like this, but just on the game of football. He will get shit for saying that, but I'm sure he's not the only one who feels that way. Cam's dancing and posing for every first down he runs for is taunting the other team. It's legal, but it's still taunting, and its only natural that defenses will use that as motivation to play harder, hit harder, hit Cam Newton harder when they get the chance, and maybe hit so hard that there is hurtful intent. It's not illegal to hit a ball carrier as hard as you can in the knees.

I dont have a problem with what he said, it's up to NBC to decide whether they want one of their commentators saying stuff like that.

Yes, Glover. It is. If you don't like my 'taunting', get a better defensive coordinator. Or defense. Or both.
I saw the interview
joeinpa : 2/6/2016 7:44 am : link
On the Dan Patrick show. The comment was made not in reaction to Cam "dapping" although that was mentioned, it was in answer to how would you stop Cam as a player.

Not suggesting this makes the comment any less egregious, but does put it into proper context. He also made it clear this was common practice by most defenses the majority of his era.
But doesn't Cam say people don't like him because of....
Crispino : 2/6/2016 7:48 am : link
his race? Weren't the Titans players who confronted him on the field about his over the top celebration of the same race as Cam? And isn't Harison too? I think most players and fans who don't like him don't like him because of his behavior, not his race. So tired of the race narrative being pushed by Cam and the media all week. And Cam, after bringing up the idea that people don't like him because he's Black then gets pissy with the media when they continue to ask him about it. Ugh.

Still leaves Harrison being a piece of shit though.
I'd take

a safety on the Giants that was as good as Harrison in his day right now, and I believe we'd all be in his corner.

Until he said go for the knees. There's nothing wrong with a defense taking out a running QB with hard, legal, shots. This is football not baseball

Concur with all your points. But there is an element of racism involved.

I m around many black youths and athletes on a daily basis. There are things I am aware of that I cannot fully appreciate unless I could walk a mile in their shoes

I m certain Cam s take is influenced by what he has experienced.

One question, because I do not remember. Was there ever the same outcry towards Aaron Rogers and the discount double check celebration.
?

And if no, why not.
Poor, sad Rodney Harrison, he has never learned to use his head....

Harrison never said he didn't like Cam, he says in the article that he doesn't have a problem with his celebrations. He was answering on how you stop a player like Cam from being effective.
Joe, I think people generally have a tolerance....
Crispino : 2/6/2016 9:35 am : link
for athletes' celebrations up to a point. When they go beyond that point, people get annoyed. I don't see it as a Black/ White thing. The Aaron Rodgers thing is quick, and then it's over. If he went to the extent that Cam does, I think people would give him shit too. I can't define the line , but I know it when I see it. Odell Beckham often crosses it for me. And if Eli went through 15 seconds of gyrations and dance steps, I think people would call him out for it too. Cam obviously crosses that line when players get in his face over it.

Cam takes the look at me, I'm superman and can dance, thing way too far. Show some respect for the game and the opponents. You know, class.
A stupid thing to say by Harrison, but he always was an asshole
Victor in CT : 2/6/2016 10:36 am : link
Furthermore, Cam has an equal or better shot at taking out a jerk like Harrison by simply lowering his shoulder and running his 250 lb self over him and it would be well within the rules.

Yeah but that right there is old school football. There is nothing "old school" about specifically targeting a guys knee, its just dirty. Now hitting guys harder then you need to to and targeting them with hard legal hits, thats a different story. Had he said "you need to focus on him and give him some clean hard hits to take try and take away his ground game, make him think twice" that comment would've never caused a negative reaction IMO.
I accept as long as he pays.

Harrison delivery was bad, but many times have had their manhood taken by Cam running over some guys for first downs. I go back to that comeback game when he played at Auburn and the Tide had them dead to rights at halftime, then he forced his will...if he does that tomorrow and Peyton plays like the last few games this will be another Carolina blowout unless Goodell calls in at half-time to slow it down for 4th quarter theatrics to hold views for advertisers.

His celebration
MotownGIANTS : 2/6/2016 3:21 pm : link
Controversy is racially motivated. Aaron Rodgers celebration becomes a national advertising campaign ..... Cam is a thug (PC term for nigger)
