Although Nassib hasn't had the opportunities on the field to showcase his skills, I am sure he has been/is considered an option by a few teams. He is mobile, has a good arm and he has had time backing up Eli in 2 systems. This could be the year a trade will make sense to a team like the Browns, Rams or Texans. He may be worth a 2nd rd'r, at least a 3rd, which would be a huge plus for us this year. Another possibility, maybe more likely, would be to trade our 1st rd pick to the Rams or Texans. Either way, I would favor one of these scenarios due to the # of holes we need to fill.
If he can bring us a return that currently helps the team then I am down for it. I would even trade him for some veteran defensive help right now.
If Eli misses time we aren't winning shit anyway so why have a competent backup QB over starters on the field? If we had a solid supporting cast then I can totally see holding on to Nassib. Look at Dallas. The media verbally blew the Cowboys for their backup QB. How did that turn out for them?
Most feel the best the Giants could get for Nassib would be a 4th round pick. If the Giants trade Nassib for a 4th round pick, they'll have to either pick up an old vet and likely pay him more than Nassib or use a 3rd, 4th or 5th round pick on a rookie that will be less capable of backing up Eli in 2016 than Nassib.
Nassib is worth a 4th round pick. The Giants would need a 2nd round pick to consider trading him. It is unlikely any team would part with a 2nd round pick for a mostly unproven player.
Hence Nassib will likely be on the roster for 2016.
I don't get your point. Most felt the Cowboys had the best backup QB in football. How did that turn out? Was that money well spent?
It was a risk worth taking at that point in the draft. We hadn't yet signed Eli to an extension, who also could have suffered a career ending injury. Many teams also had a low first or high second round grade on Nassib, and we got him for a four and a six. In addition, he plays the most important position on the field.
I still think he's a better prospect than Kirk Cousins. More mobile, and a much better arm. As with any new QB, there would be series and even whole games where he would be gruesome, but he has a lot of potential.
If I was a team in need of a QB, I would try and get him for a three, and might even give up a two for him. All the QBs in the draft have question marks. Wentz may have the most upside, but he played at North Dakota State. Are you really willing to use a top five pick on him? Goff played at Cal, but has a lanky frame that might not survive the NFL. Lynch has the size like Wentz, but most of his success was against lesser competition.
Nassib has never really played, but at least he's been in the league for the last few years. His learning curve should therefore be shorter than the other QBs. Wait until draft night, trade back in the first round to get an extra two or three, and then ship one of those picks to the Giants for Nassib. I'd love to be able to keep him after this year, but I just don't see it happening.
There are five or six QB's in the draft who are considered worthy of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round picks and you get to keep them for four years without having to worry about backing up the Brinks truck.
In the meantime, we will probably draft a qb a year for the next few years to get ready for the post-Eli era, so it is worth looking at qb's available later in the draft.
Note that when he does walk as a free agent, he will count virtually nothing towards a comp pick because he hasn't played much for the GIANTS so he won't sign for a lot of money.
And make no mistake about it, he is going to sign somewhere else where he will get a realistic chance to compete for playing time. You guys who think the G-men can re-sign him are not playing with a full deck. Eli says he will play for another 5 years. The only way Nassib re-signs with the GIANTS is if he does not get even one single offer from any other NFL or maybe even CFL team.
As for a back up QB, this team isn't going anywhere meaningful with or without a decent back up QB, so they can pick up some young vet clipboard holder dirt cheap to hold the fort for a couple of seasons.
And if they can't trade him, so be it. It'll just be another pair of Reese / Ross draft picks down the tube.
And what makes Nassib such a sure thing to be a me do cRry the load if Eli does get hurt? No one here knows and IMO the coaching staff can know a bit more but he's never taken a meaningful snap in his career
