NFT: Gourriel brothers defect, headed to MLB

DanMetroMan : 2/8/2016 10:03 am
Breaking news. 2 Cuban stars, Lourdes is the one seen as the better bet going forward at this point as Yulieski is already 32 in June.
Yulieski will draw a lot of interest
Deej : 2/8/2016 10:10 am : link
Not long term. But he's probably at least a league average hitter for the next few seasons, if not better.
Yulieski
DanMetroMan : 2/8/2016 10:15 am : link
should get at least 50 million guaranteed one would think. Olivera got 62.5 signing at 29. Lourdes is the sexier prospect though.
Yulieski

Gourriel in 2015 23 games .535/.604/1.012, 10 homers in 86 ab's lol

Is Lourdes free to sign now or is he apart of the July 2nd signing period?
The reason I ask
Jay on the Island : 2/8/2016 10:30 am : link
I read that Atlanta is rumored to spend over 30 million on IFA on July 2nd and they are rumored to have agreed with Maitan for 4.25 million and the top catcher available Abraham Gutierrez for 3 million.

Both need to be cleared first. If Lourdes waits until October to sign he wouldn't be subject to the bonus pools so odds are he doesn't sign until post-October. Yulieski could impact the second half of the 2016 season if he's cleared soon enough.

Person familiar with "Lazarito" situation told me he thinks 16-yo Cuban free agent will cut a deal w/ a team but wait till July 2 to sign.
Apparently

they have both dropped the O from their last names for some reason. Now both are Gurriel.

Love the signal the Braves are sending their fans as they rebuild. It's about talent and getting to a level where they could challenge the Mets and Nats. The money saved at the MLB level will be aggressively invested at the amateur level.

Agreed the casual fans are up in arms but I love the rapid rebuilding strategy Hart and Coppy have instituted. They have said this years payroll would be 30 million+ more than it currently is and the reasoning supposedly is that 30 million is going to be spent on the international market. Honestly I would just be thrilled with just Maitan but anything more is just gravy at this point.
I just want the Maitan handshake deal to be true in the end.

Me too I am getting a little nervous about the whole situation because the Cardinals are reportedly not giving up on signing him.

I have honestly never heard of them being referred to as anything other than "Gurriel"

They have had an O since recently. See

1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yulieski_Gourriel

2. http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/yulieski-lourdes-gourriel-play-japan/

3. ESPN (todays article in fact) http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/14740201/top-cuban-player-yulieski-gourriel-leaves-team-dominican-republic

4. Baseball Reference http://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.cgi?id=gourri000lou;utm_campaign=Linker;utm_source=direct;utm_medium=linker-mlbtraderumors.com

So not really sure what you were seeing but their last names where "Gourriel" up until very recently

fact I'm having trouble finding anything saying the name change is even true. One guy said they dropped the O recently and I believed it (no reason to lie).

"A recent goodwill trip to Cuba from several Major League stars was “the greatest experience of my life,” Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tells MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. Gurriel, possibly the top Cuban prospect still in the country and the latest member of Cuban baseball’s most iconic family, was honored to meet such stars as Miguel Cabrera (“my hero,” Gurriel said) and Clayton Kershaw. He also received an informative pep talk from Jon Jay about what’s expected to play in the big leagues, and “hearing those words from a Major League player is something that will stay with me forever,” Gurriel said. The youngest Gurriel and his older brother Yuliesky — considered by many as the best player in the Serie Nacional — have both drawn lots of attention from MLB scouts but Lourdes Jr. insists that they will only leave Cuba with the government’s permission. (Note: the brothers are reportedly now going by ’Gurriel’ rather than the more commonly-known ’Gourriel’ spelling that the family has used for decades.)"- MLBTR

I misunderstood, my bad. I thought you were saying that there originally was an "o" at the END of Gourrriel, didn't notice the second letter of the last name being removed...Carry on.

That should be *Gourriel*...Pretty sure that they never spelled it with three r's...:)

Yeah but Olivera's signing was a bad deal at the time and looks worse in hindsight, while the jury is out on Tomas and Rusney Castillo. I think both will cash in because the league is pretty flush with cash but I wonder if there is a ceiling to it.
