Question for old-timers (1951 NFL Championship)

Elisha10 : 2/8/2016 11:56 am
I was curious if anyone from the pre-superbowl era won championships with 2 teams. Only one I could find is Norm Van Brocklin with the Rams and Eagles. However, Van Brocklin split time with Bob Waterfield for the Rams. In the 1951 championship game Waterfield had many more passing attempts, but Van Brocklin through the winning TD per my research. Is there anyone old enough to remember who started this game, and who was considered the starter/better player when they split time.
without looking anything up

I think they were #1 and #2 in passing yards in the league even being on the same team.
For two years they split duties by quarters

In regards to Van Brocklin's record in 1951:

"It's amazing that Van Brocklin has somehow managed to hold that record all this time," Hirdt said. "I kind of like it. The other strange thing was, it was not uncommon in that era for teams to split the quarterback duties. The [San Francisco] 49ers had Frankie Albert and Y.A. Tittle. The Rams had Bob Waterfield. He was their No. 1 guy, the veteran, a more accomplished passer than Van Brocklin, but he did not play in that game. The New York Times article said he was injured. Van Brocklin played the whole game."

I'm sure there are several who were champions/diff teams

Examples Pre Super Bowl:

Don Chandler P 1956 Giants P/PK 1965 Packers
Jerry Huth LG 1956 Giants LG 1960 Eagles
Andy Robustelli RDE 1951 Rams RDE 1956 Giants
Doug Atkins DE 1954 Browns DE 1963 Bears
Dick Modzelewski DT 1956 Giants DT 1964 Browns
Several Giants

I think Andy Robustelli won his first with the Rams. Don Chandler and a couple of others might have won with both the '56 Giants and the Packers.
Couple others

I assume the OP

was referring to QBs since the current talk is about how Peyton is the first QB to win two SBs with two different franchises, though plenty of non-QBs have won 2 Super Bowls with different teams.
Yes, I was just talking about QBs, I should of wrote that, I am amazed
Elisha10 : 2/8/2016 1:51 pm : link
people are talking about other positions, I am sure there are many more.
Then you are correct

The closest to Van Brocklin since the advent of the NFL Championship game in 1933 was Arnie Herber who was listed as a HB but was the passer for the Packers when they won championships in 1936 and 1939, then came out of retirement to play for the Giants and was the losing QB in the 1944 Championship to his old team the Packers.
One other note in the AFL/NFL context
Defenderdawg : 2/8/2016 5:00 pm : link
QB Tobin Rote 1957 Detroit (shared time with Bobby Layne) and 1963 San Diego won dual championships.with two different teams.
Van Brocklin

shares time with Waterfield (throwing to Crazy Legs Hirsch) with the Rams.
Then he goes to The Eagles where he shares time with Sonny Jerguson.
Then Sonny Jerguson is traded for Norm Snead and goes to Wash. where he shares time wtih Billy Kilmer.

Strange...
There is another QB lineage
Defenderdawg : 2/9/2016 8:43 am : link
The Giants trade a first and a second round draft choice to Baltimore for QB George Shaw in 1959, the 49ers acquire that second round pick from Baltimore and draft Billy Kilmer...the presence of mobile QB's like Kilmer allows the 49ers to switch offenses and makes the drop back QB Y.A.Tittle available...

Meanwhile the Giants trade Shaw to Minnesota in 1961 for the Vikings first round pick which the Gians include in a package to get Erich Barnes and later Del Shofner (it's complicated) and the Rams use that pick to draft Roman Gabriel...
