The reason Cam Newton walked out on the press conference

widmerseyebrow : 2/8/2016 1:21 pm

Most figured it was just Newton in a bad mood.

But now we know the real reason why Cam bailed: He heard Denver's Chris Harris explain close by that their gameplan was to make Carolina prove it could throw the football (which obviously the Panthers did not do well on Sunday).

Here's what Harris said: "Load the box, force y'all to throw the ball. Can you throw the football? That was the gameplan."

Now watch this video of Cam listening to Harris' words before walking off.

It doesn't excuse his behavior but puts it in a slightly different light.

Very strange the NFL would set up the press conferences that way, with the opponents so close together. Very stupid.
Mental toughness
Moondawg : 2/8/2016 1:23 pm : link

It matters.
that might be the lamest excuse I've ever heard.
GMenLTS : 2/8/2016 1:23 pm : link
.
Right, sure it was
montanagiant : 2/8/2016 1:25 pm : link
Just as the question about his horrible effort on the fumble Was asked.

please with these excuses for him
micky : 2/8/2016 1:26 pm : link
He's an immature ass. Talented one, but a sore loser when things don't go his way. Or when they do, a arrogant jerk
Agreed
chopperhatch : 2/8/2016 1:26 pm : link
That def is different take on it. Harris was LOUD too. I imagine it'd be tough to do an interview in the same room as all the guys who just beat you in the super bowl.
If you watch the video
widmerseyebrow : 2/8/2016 1:29 pm : link
he's clearly tuning out of his conference and listening to Harris.

Now does it matter that he can't take the heat from a player talking about him in another room vs. some sports writer? No, of course not.
how does this excuse anything?
Sonic Youth : 2/8/2016 1:30 pm : link
This doesn't absolve him of how he acted at the press conference. All he's done is give ammo to the his critics. Really stupid move by him. He clearly doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks, but still, he deserves to be called out for it.
this is the very definition of making excuses for a child.
GMenLTS : 2/8/2016 1:32 pm : link
and I don't even care that much about his comments in the presser. I can't imagine how I would be feeling in that moment after losing the SB.

But you're supposed to be a professional and this is a job requirement. Suck it up and quit being a baby when the game doesn't go your way.
That's the excuse?
Randy in CT : 2/8/2016 1:32 pm : link
That would be his problem. Prime example.
please continue to enable this kid to act like a child
GMAN4LIFE : 2/8/2016 1:35 pm : link
either way i dont care but to see your "leader" sulk and be down like that, fuck it would suck. Hell look at Russel Wilson at the end of his game. He still believed even when it seemed all hope is lost. "biggest comeback ever" he said that over and over to his team. This guy looks for flags to help.
Game plan
giantgiantfan : 2/8/2016 1:40 pm : link
worked. Now I believe Carolina can throw the ball, but Denver made Carolina look like they didn't belong there.
This "excuse"...
Chris in Philly : 2/8/2016 1:41 pm : link
isn't making him look any better. He's still a petulant twat...
Because he's a crybaby douche.
Dave in Hoboken : 2/8/2016 1:41 pm : link

I don't get it.
an_idol_mind : 2/8/2016 1:41 pm : link
How does explaining that he walked out because somebody hurt his feelings make him look any more mature?
This is exactly why i do not like Newton...
That’s Gold, Jerry : 2/8/2016 1:42 pm : link
never have. It has nothing to do with colour or race...it has to do with class and how to handle yourself in these tough situations. Doesn't matter if it was Newton or Aaron Rodgers...you handle these things like a man, not a pouty adolescent.

Can you imagine Russell Wilson doing that? It is a shame that Newton and others have chosen to frame the way people feel about him on such a stupid level. It is all about actions and acting like a man, not a child.

Let's hope the next stage in his development is to become a mature man.
Warren Moon was just on espn
B in ALB : 2/8/2016 1:45 pm : link
Proclaiming this as Newton's excuse and said it's not Cams fault.

Petulant child acts like a brat, takes his ball and goes home - yet we should somehow think otherwise because there is another interview going on nearby? Please.
bragged all week
grizz299 : 2/8/2016 1:46 pm : link
and wouldn't dive after a ball ....Nope, the kid had to shut up or deliver....He played terribly ...which is one thing, showed no guts after the fumble and no guts at the press conference.
Maybe Cam Newton

And he has two coaches at the presser signaling to him to not act like a twat. Insufferable...
you've got to be kidding me
Greg from LI : 2/8/2016 1:50 pm : link
Oh, noes, he heard someone from the Broncos mocking his shitty performance? Better go pout with a towel over his head, stat!

Hey, Chris Harris is just having fun out there! Why is Cam such a hater?
even Lois Lane is tougher than that

how can you puke w/o a gut?
Let me throw this out to all of you
Larry in Pencilvania : 2/8/2016 1:57 pm : link
How do you think if Cam won the game and was MVP?

To me I think he'd act exactly the same just on the other end of the scale....a spoiled Bratty child
How does that in any way shed a different light on anything?
ShocknAwe80 : 2/8/2016 1:57 pm : link
All it does is show Cam's true colors and thin skin... Whether it was about the questions asked of him, or about Denver's game plan makes no difference. That is not the way to conduct yourself at a presser.
stupid phone
Larry in Pencilvania : 2/8/2016 1:58 pm : link

Francessa had a FANTASTIC line in monologue about Cam
ShocknAwe80 : 2/8/2016 1:59 pm : link
"He acted more like Louis Lane than Superman both on the field (not diving for that fumble) and off the field (presser)
it just highlights who Cam Newton is

A guy who can dish it out with all the dancing and posing but can't take it in return.

It's pretty clear Cam's "maturation" this year
widmerseyebrow : 2/8/2016 2:05 pm : link
was because he only lost once coming into this game. Same guy. It won't be long before apologists can no longer point to his age as an excuse. It's his character.
You
giantsblue1 : 2/8/2016 2:09 pm : link
Mean the same guy who was yucking it up on our sideline and taking a Eli throw away like he was returning it for a td has his feelings hurt over that???
Denver players saying
MetsAreBack : 2/8/2016 2:12 pm : link
'our gameplan was to make them one dimensional and pass the ball to beat us' (smart considering Carolina has pedestrian at best WRs) -- isnt exactly taunting now is it?

Lame excuse and shame on some in the media for buying it.
Did Chris Harris
therealmf : 2/8/2016 2:16 pm : link
also tell Cam to wear his hoodie up?

Seriously, I can't believe someone from the Panthers organization didn't tell him to uncover his head. It made him look petulant and closed off, just as much as his responses and actions did.
It is a lame excuse
beatrixkiddo : 2/8/2016 2:16 pm : link
Cam is just having fun though, ya know!

Couldn't be any clearer that he is a arrogant douche, but alas there are still those that feel the need to defend him. He's a great talent, incredibly skilled, but I just can't root for someone as obnoxious, and immature as this guy.
I mean... I believe that to be true
Mike in Long Beach : 2/8/2016 2:18 pm : link

for showing some passion and humanity in the game.

It think tts refreshing to see some guys aren't robots.
Yea,
Glover : 2/8/2016 2:27 pm : link
being within earshot of players from the winning team totally sucks. It also must suck to lose a Super Bowl, but someone please find me a Super Bowl losing QB who pouted like that.

Cam dances and celebrates when he wins and pouts and sulks when he loses the big game. That didnt surprise me at all. I would have been surprised if he stood up and did what he had to do after the game despite the loss. You know he had some garish, tacky suit ready had they won, but he donned a hoodie to hide after a loss.

I didnt think much of his antics on the field this season because he was really great, however, I did not like the sideline group photos when the game was still on. Now after his pouty post game, I'm not giving this guy anything, he is a classless winner and a classless loser. Asshole. Active destroyer of the concept of sportsmanship.
passion and humanity? baaaahhahahaha
Greg from LI : 2/8/2016 2:28 pm : link
If you're going to showboat when things are going your way, be man enough to take your lumps when you get your ass beaten. Otherwise, shut up.

I am more upset about his effort on the fumble. That's all I need to know about that guy.

But in the grand scheme of things don't hot dog around the field and press when things are going good if you can't take the heat. Being up there is a part of his job and he gets paid a lot of money for it.

Btw how you been man. Lost contact with you over the years and had to change my Handle when this place got hacked.
What did Harris say that was so bad, though?
jcn56 : 2/8/2016 2:32 pm : link
I get that it was basically them daring Cam to beat them - but is that supposed to come as some sort of a shock?
jcn - he didnt even say that
MetsAreBack : 2/8/2016 2:35 pm : link
he basically just said they wanted to make Carolina one dimensional and beat them by passing.

One could take that personally, as Cam clearly did. But they never said 'we're going to make Cam's arm beat us'

I personally took it as Denver knew Carolina's WR suck ... and game planned accordingly.

In any event, what teams dont try to take the oppositions best player or two and one aspect (run game, whatever) away from them? Somewhat standard stuff here unless I'm missing something.
Apropos of nothing,
an_idol_mind : 2/8/2016 2:36 pm : link
I'm not sure how having a prepared touchdown dance shows passion in the game.
This is a Cruz and Nicks game!

Make them go to Manningham.
Harris didn't even
therealmf : 2/8/2016 2:41 pm : link
know Cam was listening. He was just explaining the game plan. When he found out he apologized and blamed the NFL for putting the two conferences so close together.
I wouldn't want this guy on my team
Excitable Boy : 2/8/2016 2:43 pm : link
Even if he was handed to the Giants for nothing. Poor excuse for a professional football player . Thank God we have Eli Manning.
