Should Peyton be fined by the NFL for promoting Budweiser?

Milton : 2/8/2016 4:11 pm
Quote:
In a post-game interview with CBS's Tracy Wolfson, Manning said he planned to "drink a lot of Budweiser" to celebrate his Super Bowl victory. A few minutes later on the winner's podium, the five-time National Football League MVP again brought up the popular brew, saying, "What’s weighing on my mind is how soon I can get a Bud Light in my mouth."

Since "active players are not allowed to endorse alcoholic beverages, per league rules" shouldn't there be some form of punishment for Peyton's obvious attempt to circumvent that rule? The first quote is obvious enough (otherwise he would say "drink a lot of beer" instead of naming the brand), but the second quote can leave no doubt that he is advertising for Budweiser and the fact that he is part-owner of two distributors is proof enough that there is financial compensation.

I get that it's hypocritical of the NFL to deny the players a revenue stream that they themselves take full advantage of (Budweiser being a main sponsor of the NFL), but a rule is a rule.

Oh I am that guy, for sure... I'd definitely pretend to like a good beer to fit in with the cool kids.

Luckily, as it turns out, I actually do know the difference between a good brew and those Michelob Ultra' you're presumably drowning in during all these 3rd period meltdowns, lately.

I think 95% of the people who choose Budweiser over better tasting beers do it for reasons of price (in other words, Budweiser is their favorite beer at a price that fits their budget). If price wasn't a consideration (and for Peyton, it certainly isn't) they would likely choose another beer as their staple.

I would bet that's wrong. While less expensive than craft beers, Bud is hardly cheap. There are many less expensive beers available, some that are arguably better. Many peopke dislike craft beer.
When he said it once
giantsfan227B : 2/8/2016 4:41 pm : link
I thought whatever. When I saw him mention it on every interview then it annoyed me. Not because it is beer. Just because it was so blatant. I heard he wasn't getting paid by Budweiser to do that but he owns shares of 2 different Bud Breweries so he obviously has an interest.

Don't know if you caught one of the first guys he hugged walking onto field as soon as game ended was that Papa John guy. He definitely was taking care of his outside NFL businesses.

Yeah I mean, he was definitely paid. He said it twice. Once on the on-the-field interview, and once up on the podium when getting the Lombardi.

He was not paid, Bud themselves have come out and stated this. They did send a bunch of cases to the locker room, but they did not pay him
What exactly are they going to fine?

No, it would be different because Disney isn't an alcoholic beverage. There is no rule against active players advertising for movie studios (or pizza chains for that matter), but there is a rule against active players endorsing alcoholic beverages.

Is it hypocritical of the NFL? Definitely! But it is a rule and Peyton violated it.

$10k? $25k? Budweiser would gladly cover that as the free advertising they'd get out of the "controversy" would more than make up for it.

They are a really good beer so hopefully bud doesn't ruin them. They'll probably keep the same quality for a couple years and then slowly go downhill.

If Peyton violated an NFL policy he should be fined. If Budweiser was a sponsor of the NFL, maybe they put him up to it like the Disney thing. Can you be fined for advertising a product that sponsors the NFL?

I am as much a craft beer guy as anyone but if you are hanging out On vacation and start drinking at 11am at the lake or the beach, you are not drinking IPA's all day. The first sip of an ice cold Bud is still tough to beat

This from a guy whose fridge has 3 diff flavors of Shed, Schmaltz Messiah Nut Brown, Founders Mothers Milk and Browns IPA. I do also have Bud Light in Bottles

In the summer at the lake fridge there is also labatts blue light, Michelob Ultra Amber, Pacifico and the like

Showing my age. We didn't how good we had it when we had hundreds of independent breweries in this country. I loved Schaefer beer because it was such a mild beer it had a sweet taste to it. Rheingold was more bitter. And there was Knickerbocker, Ballantine Ale, and Piels in the New York metro area when I had my first beers.

Moved to Wisconsin in early 70s. Home to Miller, Pabst, Schlitz, Blatz, Gettleman, Old Style, Leinkugels, and Point.

And that's the way it was all around the country. Local breweries and a few beers that were sold nationally. While today we have all these micro-breweries the independent breweries are gone. All of the older beers are simply labels for Coors-Miller and/or Budweiser.

Miller at its peak under Philip Morris ownership slugged it out with Budweiser. The top marketing guy at Miller used to have a Budweiser Rug under his desk so he could stomp on it everyday.

But no more. Accountants run these mega breweries with their umpteen labels with virtual no distinction in taste.
There are more independent breweries in

If he was going to go out pimping bud, it should have been the green kind. THAT would have been a gif for the ages.

He didn't get any money. He has an ownership interest in the company, I believe, which is why league rules were circumvented. He wasnt directly paid for his promotion, but he hopes to profit from it.

That whole interview was embarrassing.
Big Blue Blogger : 2/9/2016 3:10 am : link
Wolfson sounded like she hadn't even watched the game, and was just trying to set up her one money question: "Is this your final game for your career?" Which was stupid, because Peyton obviously wasn't going to answer it, and he was ready with a product-placement response. She could have asked a more open-ended question about the future that gave Manning room to announce his retirement if that's what he was inclined to do. Instead, she asked a graceless, direct question and got the non-answer she deserved.

When CBS went back to the booth, Nance seemed pretty dismissive of the whole exchange. No idea whether he was set off by the way Wolfson asked the question, or the way Manning responded.

The Budweiser plug was tacky, but that's OK - it just leaves more room for Eli to be the classy Manning brother.

He has a stake in Bud distribution centers. While the product placement was a savvy guerilla marketing tactic, it was very tacky and yeah, he will probably be receiving a fine for violating the alcohol sponsorship rules for players.
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 2/9/2016 10:47 am : link
1) It's not a question of whether you are bothered by it. There is a clear rule prohibiting active players from advertising alcoholic beverages. If his supposed free shilling of Bud falls into this category, then he should be fined 2 times.

2) Personally, I just think it was embarrassing.
It's unfortunate

Just because you don't like one of them (IPA) doesn't make them swill. It just means you don't like them. It's like say T. Monk sucks because you don't like jazz.

Should he be fined? if it's against the rules, then yes. but they won't because he is currently the golden boy of football.
