NFT: Knicks Chat 2/9: The Kurt Rambis Era begins!

bceagle05 : 2/9/2016 11:28 am
Two of our favorite douchebags are making some headlines: Stephen A. is reporting that Jeanie Buss is cleaning house in LA at the end of the year to pave the way for Phil's return, and Isola is reporting that Phil has an opt out in his contract at the end of this season, so he can leave us high and dry without compensation. Consider the sources, but that is an unsettling thought given that Dolan stooges like Mills and Houston would likely take over.

On a more positive note, Woj is reporting that the Knicks at least have Westbrook's attention, and Hahn always drops Westbrook's name as a future Knick, so hopefully those two have some legit sources on that front. Westbrook's always been the guy I've had my eye on, more so than even Durant.

Otherwise, we'll see if the tailspin continues tonight against Washington, the final game before the long break. Any thoughts on what Rambis might do to change things up? Gallo starting over Calderon? Tighter rotation? More O'Quinn? Less Sasha and Lou?

A shit show? Let's calm down a bit with that.

Plug in a starting caliber NBA point guard and they're unquestionably one of the top 8 seeds in the East. Plug in someone of Westbrook's caliber with some more experience/growth from KP, this is a pretty damn good team.
Of the things I remember
Aspano! : 2/9/2016 11:39 am : link
from Rambis taking over for Fisher when he was thrown out in the Lakers game (I believe?), was that he immediately sat Sasha. Aside from that, I don't remember any particular moves he made during that game.

...which is probably a good thing.
I'd

Seriously. Why not give those minutes to a young guy with some potential to have a future in the league. Every singe minute given to Sasha V. and Sweet Lou are wasted minutes.

I was disappointed that Phil doubled down on the triangle yesterday.
bceagle05 : 2/9/2016 12:16 pm : link
I was hoping to hear him say he'd be a little more flexible going forward. Thibodeau is by far the best candidate, but that rules him out completely. There will be a bidding war for Walton's services, so he'll have no need to cave into Phil's demands like Fisher did. The Cavs already made the Ty Lue move, so that leaves us with guys like Shaw and Rambis. Just brutal. Additionally, if Phil plans on bailing within the next year, I sure hope he doesn't saddle us with a five-year contract for a shitty triangle coach while he hops a flight back to LA. If he's not gonna work with the new coach for at least two years, then just pick the best guy for the sake of the franchise.
Let's not act like the Knicks got a pool of young guys with NBA talent

PER of 17 and per 36 minute rates of 14.4 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.1 blocks, 1.2 steals. Numbers suggestive of borderline stardom.

And yet whenever I see him I get frustrated. He fails my eye test. Notably, 3.4 TOs and 5.3 assists. But even more than that, he looks like a 35 year old out there to me. Not moving, reaching. Making stupid passes. Im just saying, I havent been pining for more KOQ run.

But if the season is lost, and IMO it essentially is (1-2% to make playoffs?), why NOT give him run? We know what Thomas and Williams are -- pending free agents (ETO for LT).
How about Walton convincing Phil
Deej : 2/9/2016 12:31 pm : link
that the structure concepts and movement of the triangle make total sense, but you need to resize it for the 2016 game where the league overall is a much better shot from distance? Fit a system that makes sense to the available talent. The year the Bulls won 72, the league tried 1316 3 pointers. Thru about 52 games per team, the league has already tried 1237 3s, on pace for ~2000. Game has changed, skills have changed, and the system needs to adapt.
The metrics may like him
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/9/2016 12:31 pm : link
but I think he makes as many goofball plays as good ones. He looks barely athletic enough to be out there.

From your lips to God's ears. I'd love to know what offense Kerr would've run if he had taken the job. I'm hoping Kerr made the same case you did and Phil was on board. I don't think we need to run the exact triangle offense Tex Winter drew up in his spiral notebook 50 years ago.
Why not use the 2009-10
Semipro Lineman : 2/9/2016 1:49 pm : link
LA Lakers for your example? Being that it was only six years ago that a team using the triangle offense won a championship. By the way, that season the average 3pt attempts per team were 1487 with the Lakers shooting 1562 attempts. Seems to me that the offense evolved to take advantage of the trend when it had more capable players.
So while the Knicks are currently shooting about 7% less threes than league average, who do you suggest should be shooting more from behind the arc?
Also you can look at someone like the Spurs
Aspano! : 2/9/2016 1:59 pm : link
Who play at one of the slowest paces in the league, and shoot the 5th lowest number of three pointers.

The Triangle is meant to get open shots from everywhere, not just in the midrange. Where those shots come from will depend on the strengths of the lineup.

Fair point. The counter is Phil's seeming pooh poohing of 3rd point oriented offenses during the playoffs.

Knicks actually have some decent 3 point shooters. Their overall 3P% is dragged down by guys like Sasha and DWill (and somewhat Melo) taking too many. Indeed, take away DWill and Jerian and they're ~10th overall in 3P%.

I thought Atl's interest was in opening up the PG spot for Schroeder (SP?). How does trading for Hill alter that? Hill is a pure 1, and a starter.

Hill has been more of a 2 with Ellis. He is more than capable of guarding 2's despite his size. Atlanta has been looking to trade Korver so i guess they are looking for a Schroder-Hill backcourt with Baze at the 3.
Is it a possibility that

giantsfan44ab : 2/9/2016 2:40 pm : link
that could potentially save them if its only a 2-3 weeks timetable. They do play the Hawks twice, raptors and cavs in the next 2 weeks so they could conceivably drop out for a bit. It looks like a top 4 seed might be out of the question for them though.

Also, If i remember correctly, when Lance was there Hill took on more of an off guard role. He's always been more of a combo guard I guess. His shooting really helps him at the 2 spot.
I think he's a 1 even if they put him at 2
Deej : 2/9/2016 2:49 pm : link
last year was his best, and he was a 1.

Last year was really the only year he played without PG. Every other year it seems that he took a backseat to another player at floor general duties.
He's probably best as a PG
giantsfan44ab : 2/9/2016 2:56 pm : link
but most starting PGs today are more capable game managers than him, there aren't many teams right now where he would be the ball dominant guard.

Huh?
Firing Fisher doesn't make them a shit show.
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/9/2016 5:16 pm : link
That's what everyone wanted two months ago, now it's a shit show?

They're performing pretty much as expected with a current lousy stretch. This was never going to be a playoff team. Just a better team than last year, and they could use that as a foundation to build off of. If you thought they were going to do any better than loiter around .500 you were being optimistic.

Don't bother man. Some people don't get it.
No issue with firing Fisher, it had to be done at some point.
bceagle05 : 2/9/2016 5:37 pm : link
If anything, it shows that Phil is willing to acknowledge a mistake, swallow his pride, and make the right move for the franchise. Hopefully the short-term effect is a hot streak that at least gets us back near .50o by season's end. It can only help in free agency.

I will have an issue, however, if this coaching search is limited to triangle cronies, particularly if Phil is bailing in a year or two. I'd rather he leave us Porzingis and Thibodeau when he rides off into the sunset.

That a wide open three for KP is not a good shot and it's not a shot they want him taking. Especially since he just shot two free throws (after missed shot and offensive rebound). Huh.

Yeah. I don't know. If KP is open he should shoot the Fucking ball.
Clyde argument made no sense
Deej : 2/9/2016 8:36 pm : link
it's a bad shot because KP lacks confidence. So isnt any shot from KP therefore bad? Clyde has been really brutal. Like the end of Ralph Kiner's career.
KP should shoot whenever he is open
Vanzetti : 2/9/2016 8:37 pm : link
The problem with KP right now is that if you pass him the ball and he does not shoot immediately, he fumbles the ball when he tries to dribble or pass. The other team is just swatting at the ball whenever KP has it and generating turnovers or breakdowns on offense.

Also, when he and Lopez are on he court at the same time, the offense is terrible. No movement.
