NFT: Islanders at Columbus, 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 2/9/2016 11:42 am
Beware misfiring cannons...onto 'Lumbus and the Jackets.

Same lineup as last game, Jaro Halak guarding the net. See, Strait acting like a punching bag standing up for Hicks earned him Cappy's eternal love and respect. Now he'll never sit.

KO plays in his 500th NHL game tonight. Congrats, Oakie.

Let's Go Islanders!

Keep on looking forward
No use in looking round
Carry your head above the crowd
And they won't bring you down

Can you stop? Islanders fans are supposed to stick together. The Islanders deserve to be criticized intelligently right now, and I'm all for it... but you're legitimately the only person who consistently ruins otherwise interesting discussion.

I'm asking respectfully, one last time, to give it a rest with the schtick and try and contribute something of value.

As for the team/game... it's incredible how if you give these guys just a taste of success, they immediately become complacent, and often, give back whatever it is they earn.

I apologize, Mike. I like you.

To be honest, I'm just so sick of the inconsistency of this team. I'll be at the game Monday, if you wish to meet for a beer.
Fair enough, Gutless Puke.
Mike in Long Beach : 2/9/2016 7:58 pm : link
I assure you there's not a soul on this thread who isn't equally pissed. Kwhite and I have had disagreements about certain players and the general state of the team, but he also comes to play when things are going well, too. It gives credence to his distain when it happens.

As for Monday, I would, but it's a day game and I'll be at work, so I had to sell it. Some other time.

Alright then.

I apologize to Pganut as well. You guys are true blue Islanders fans. I've been one for 38 years.

Lots of blind passes, not a lot of continuity. Okposo just made a nice diving play... but these guys need to trust each other and, simply put, get it the fuck together.

You cannot lose this game.

Halak didnt really have a shot at either. The 1st he gad 3 guys in front and didnt see it. 2nd was a terrible play by de haan that lead to a 2-1 onetimer he had no shot at

You are correct sir. Like I said following on Twitter before so assumed he let up softy. Really want him to find his game where he steals it

Still need to seize the reins. Can't give one up in return.

Gutless Puke, thanks. I've also been a fan for 40 years. These are brighter days and it's nice to have something worthwhile again. I'm enjoying the ride and hoping they eventually mature into an elite team. Bumpy ride, but galaxies beyond the mid-nineties to early-2010s dreck we endured.

I think Hickey's mostly been good but he's small, so he can get pushed around at times .

Some amazing chances there. Hate that it comes down to a SO. Outside of the 2 gaffes in the first, Isles thoroughly dominated in the 2nd and 3rd. The kid in net for CBJ has been the reason why the Isles don't win it going away.

We were the better hockey team. Coming into tonight, the Islanders had the 2nd worst road record in the East, behind only the Rangers... so that is a gritty, grinded two points.

Islanders are 11-9-2 this year against teams that currently hold a playoff spot... however... 0-3 in their last 3, and 2-5 over their last 7 (Rangers and Stars).

Important to come out, play well, and beat a very good Kings team.
Hey guys
theold5j : 2/9/2016 10:18 pm : link
Sorry I've misses a lot of game threads. My 2 and a half year old is not cooperating at all at night so it's been tough to get on. Great 2nd point. Next 4 games are huge. Then we have a 7 game road trip. Need to rack up the points now. Terrible shootout effort by Tavares. Was he doing his best Randy Wood (playoff penalty shot vs rangers) impression on that shootout.
Isles
pganut : 2/9/2016 10:19 pm : link
Despite the clunker against Detroit, are playing very well over the last 5 games. Tonight, they outshot CBJ, 39-19 after the first period. I'll lookup the info when it's posted, but the Isles possession numbers for the 2nd and 3rd I'm sure will be very lopsided in their favor. They were the better team for about 45 minutes, including the last 40. They definitely deserved the win. Credit to Korpisalo. Excellent effort.
Just looking at some stats...
JayBinQueens : 2/9/2016 11:54 pm : link
Isles are 8th in goals per game - with how much they miss the net and how many more goals they could have had this year, I'm actually surprised they were still this high..

14th PP% - not great but still better than 50% of the teams.

Biggest stat to me; They're 2nd in the NHL on the Penalty Kill. This has been the biggest and most obvious improvement for the team this year. Assuming they get into the playoffs, I think this improvement can help sway a series.

Only watched the third
Metnut : 2/10/2016 10:12 am : link
period last night. Was a pretty brutal pace as Howie mentioned about 10 times. Liked the goal to tie it up and thought the Isles were the better team.

Nice night for Barzal last night. 3 goals and an assist.
It was a well played games
Dave M : 2/10/2016 10:15 am : link
Minus some bad defensive plays. Korpisalo was really good for them as the Isles kept the pressure on most of the game. I didn't check out any stats but it appeared that the Isles possessed the puck at a 2-1 ratio. As MILB started before the game Strait had been, dare I say, serviceable? The playoff race is really tight and this team has to break the trend of inconsistency. It's time to make a run get a stranglehold on a playoff spot.

It's crazy. On any given night we've found ourselves anywhere between 4 and 9... even 3 when the Rangers slump a little.

about some players that might be available. Tell me yes or no and what you think it might take to get them.

Kris Versteeg LW Carolina
Alex Tanguay LW Colorado
Andrew Ladd LW Jets
Mikkel Boedker LW Coyotes
Jamie McGinn LW Buffalo
Nicklas Grossman D Coyotes
Kris Russell D Calgary

Personally, I would like Ladd or Boedker and then take a flyer on Tanguay. I also would like Russell to solidify the 5 or 6th spot. Thoughts?

I like Russell - do you think Boedker would be much of an upgrade to what we have - or more so an acquisition to push everyone else on the team?

I got stuck in a meeting last night, that I thooght would not last as long as it did. I always hate those. That being said Looks like we had a great start to the game then a lapse and then they turned it up big time. Need for Lee to keep scoring on the PP. Will help this team big time.

As for Russell I too like him he would fit perfectly here. As for Boedker I think he would look great next to JT. I has a nice % of goals scored on his shot. I think with JT he would score even more.

The islanders do not need anymore undersized defensemen.

He's Thomas Hickey, really. And his point will go down here because he'd be on the lower pairing of defense...I actually think Hickey is more productive if you put him in Calgary!
I know, I gotta get a life.. but am I missing something here?
Mike in Long Beach : 2/10/2016 11:42 am : link
Both ESPN and NHL.com have Okposo listed as -2 yesterday. But Columbus scored two goals total and Okposo provided the primary assist on Lee's goal.

So... error?
