Don't be surprised if the Giants draft Ronnie Stanley.

Ira : 2/10/2016 9:03 am
Will Beatty is coming back from a serious injury and he'll be 31 next month. He's under contract for this season and next, but he'll be an easy cut after the coming season. The draft has a few high end defensive players who may be gone by the 10th pick. Other than Beatty, Flowers is the only guy we want to start at tackle. Pugh can play there, but the Giants like him at left guard.

The Giants need to upgrade their d first, but if there's no defensive player who's as high or close enough to Stanley on their board, and if they haven't added a tackle in free agency, Stanley could be the guy we pick in the first round.

Stanley's a very good pass protector and a developing run blocker. He'll need to get stronger to be effective against the run. In that respect, he reminds me of Beatty who needed time to get stronger when we first drafted him.

This is not my choice for our first round pick and I'm not even predicting it. I'm just pointing out that it could happen - especially if we do a lot for our defense in free agency.

I would be surprised as Hell
Carl in CT : 2/10/2016 9:05 am : link
Cause he won't be there when we pick.
I dont think that this will happen
superspynyg : 2/10/2016 9:06 am : link
only because I don't think that he will be there at 10. I am in the we need a def heavy draft but he, Tunsil are really the only two offensive players I would take at 10. All my other players are def: Jack, Alexander, Hargreaves, Lawson (still not sure he is worth #10), Ramsey.
I'm less impressed with Stanley than some.
yatqb : 2/10/2016 9:08 am : link
I don't see the great feet you'd like in a LT. He looks to me a lot like Flowers; that's not bad, but neither have prototypical LT movement skills, imo.
And the Giants need T that can play now
BillT : 2/10/2016 9:12 am : link
And I don't think Beatty is the solution. A FA there would make more sense.
He may be gone,
Ira : 2/10/2016 9:12 am : link
but Walter Football and Scott Wright (draftcountdown) both have him going to the Bears at 11. Boylhart has him going at 9 to the Bucs. If he does go before we pick, maybe we'll get a better defensive player as a result.
I'm not all that thrilled
The_Boss : 2/10/2016 9:13 am : link
With the defensive prospects who should be available at 10. Hargreaves, Alexander, and any of the DL not named Bosa really don't scream value at 10. I have a suspicion we go offense and Stanley is on my short list, along with Treadwell and Elliott.
if Stanley carries the grade so be it, but
JonC : 2/10/2016 9:23 am : link
I'd be shocked if we spent another top 10 pick on an OT.
I'd
AcidTest : 2/10/2016 9:25 am : link
be fine with Stanley, but as others have said, he'll mostly like be gone.

The Giants will go BPA, regardless of position, except maybe QB. That's why Elliot is a possibility. They aren't going to pick a defensive player simply because of our needs on that side of the ball.
I dont see them drafting Staley
blueblood : 2/10/2016 9:33 am : link
I can see them signing a veteran RT...
I would be very surprised
Vanzetti : 2/10/2016 9:36 am : link
I think RS will be a good player but Giants desperately need defense.

Also, Stanley was dominated by Shaq Lawson, so he is probably not NFL ready. Which means next year, he won't be any better than Beatty/ Newhouse.

Reese is trying to save his job. Doubt he goes with a guy who won't make an immediate impact.
I can see them drafting Stanley
section125 : 2/10/2016 9:38 am : link
if he is the top pick in the tier.

But until we see who Jerry signs in FA, we have no starting point for whom they might be looking at #10.

If Prince goes, MacKenzie and Hargreaves are in the picture. If they cannot get an adequate DE, Lawson and a couple others might be there.

Point is, the offense now is decent. The defense is horrible.
We have so many holes to fix...especially on D...
That’s Gold, Jerry : 2/10/2016 9:44 am : link
it wouldn't surprise me if he is there but i think the focus in the first round has to be on defense
HUGE ND FAN
TeamSchlitz1 : 2/10/2016 10:21 am : link
But I really would be upset if we picked him at #10, I would rather have Jalen Smith by a mile and it's not even close. If you take away that injury, he is a no-brainer top 3 pick.

Ronnie had way too many penalties this year... He was very solid, but not top 10 level. I don't see it unless he comes to the combine and blows away all the other o-linemen.

Stated that what he determined from the Superbowl and Denver's success, is that in today's NFL you have to have the pass rushers. OR the o lineman to stop them.So if Stanley grades out significantly higher than the available pass rushers I'm fine with Stanely
Giants are in need of defense
blueblood'11 : 2/10/2016 10:26 am : link
Defense defense and more defense. That's why they'll probably go offense.
long time fans may really loose interest
idiotsavant : 2/10/2016 10:27 am : link
if they have to watch another year of weak DL/LB/DB play.

Pugh is not so shabby for 2018 left tackle anyway.
I think we should take BPA
chuckydee9 : 2/10/2016 10:30 am : link
We have tons of money to be spent and we should spend it on Defense, cause thats where majority of our holes are.. On offense we get a 2nd WR and a solid OL we should be fine.. this way we can draft the BPA.. Almost anyone we pick up as a FA on defense will improve our defense..
Doubtful Stanley is there but
Cruzin : 2/10/2016 10:37 am : link

if he is then that's the pick, no question about it.

Grab Stanley and figure the rest out later. Thank the Lord, Santa, Karma or the ghost of Wellington Mara that we now have a bonafide, top flight O lineman.

He won't be there though.
None of Beatty Injuries are of the Recurring Type
OntheRoad : 2/10/2016 10:58 am : link
so switching to a healthy player would really not improve the injury risk very much.

I believe the Giants hold Beatty in slightly higher esteem than BBI. With Beatty, the OL is close to complete (just shore up RT). He is a much better LT at this point than Flowers.

Teams want to retain good players when rebuilding. Beatty is a much better risk/salary combination than either rolling the dice on a free agant or spending a first rounder. Can't understand the constant desire to dump him.

I agree defense needs most of the draft & FA placed there. Disagree that they should put blinders over their eyes and ignore all offense prospects in front of them. That would be stupid and I don't think the Giants will do that.

analyst should be fired. The conclusion from the Super Bowl should be that speed in the back 7 (or 8 in a 3-4) kills

We don't have any outside of DRC.
Well, here's why...

It's not a matter of dumping him, it's who is available in the draft or free agency......how many years does he have left? If there is a replacement out there, you use his salary towards the replacement....he is not part of the Giant's future....
Stanley
stretch234 : 2/10/2016 11:36 am : link
If here is there you run to the podium. The guy is a top 5 player. Only defensive player I get over him is Ramsey

Will not matter. he is not making it to 10
Given the need
old man : 2/10/2016 11:45 am : link
for solid young D players, and the #10, I would be disappointed.
But I would not be disappointed if he was selected.
RS-JP-WR-BH?-EF gives us a nice young OL.
If they cut Beatty
jeff57 : 2/10/2016 11:47 am : link
Wouldn't surprise me at all.
Even when they cut Beatty
Cruzin : 2/10/2016 11:54 am : link

It doesn't get us any closer to Stanley.

Trade up?

Can't see that happening.
Now that they DID cut Beatty
George : 2/10/2016 12:29 pm : link
it suddenly looks like a very real possibility.

Not a probability, but a possibility.

He was abused by Lawson
chilly460 : 2/10/2016 1:29 pm : link
Watch the Clemson/ND game, Lawson worked him over pretty good, which scares me. Lawson is very solid, but I wouldn't say "elite", so spending a 10 on Stanley is concerning.

Could just be a bad matchup type thing, Lawson is sort of an anomaly being a power guy with good hands versus a speed guy at RDE, so have to see more tape to see if it was a one time thing.
I've been watching that Clemson/ND game that's been mentioned.
Ira : 2/10/2016 5:04 pm : link
It's a great game to watch because there are several players in it who are going to do well in the NFL. Assuming Myles Jack and Bosa are taken, Shaq Lawson is the guy I most want the Giants to draft. Then, of course, there's Stanley, Fuller and Prosise(sp?). I did think Lawson got the better of the matchup, but I was still impressed with Stanley - with his footwork and quickness out of the stance.
If we "need"
Randy in CT : 2/10/2016 5:05 pm : link
a player at a certain position, chances are we will fill those gaps mostly in free agency.
Defense defense defense
Torrag : 2/10/2016 6:35 pm : link
Unless an offensive player is a clearly superior talent the 1st Round pick should be on defense.

If we shoot the moon on defensive free agents my philosophy could change.
our total lack of pass rush this passed season
Jersey55 : 2/11/2016 4:51 pm : link
is the main reason we lost so many games and for that reason I can't understand why people want an O lineman in round one, this league is all about rushing the passer.
