The combined moves are believed to create an additional $12.27 million in cap space.
Schwartz was scheduled to make $3.925 million in salary in 2016 and count $4.908 million against the 2016 salary cap. Cutting Schwartz saves the Giants $2.992 million against the cap with $1.917 million in dead money.
Beatty was scheduled to make $6.625 million in salary in 2016 and count $9.175 million against the 2016 salary cap. Cutting Beatty saves the Giants $4.175 million against the cap with $5 million in dead money.
Beason was scheduled to make $2.8 million in salary in 2016 and count $6.567 million against the 2016 salary cap. Cutting Beason saves the Giants $5.1 million against the cap with $1.467 million in dead money.

Only those that have been cut or are without contracts. Free Agency doesn't officially begin until next month.
The Giants should be very careful to get players that fit the roles the coaches set. It seems like the Eagles spent a lot of very good players who couldn't fit into the Eagles schemes.
I'd look instead at Michael Griffin types. Reasonably priced and, most importantly, hungry.

It's also how the Redskins got in trouble. They were always trying to patch up all their holes in Free Agency.

I see another 2005 type spree on the horizon.

Terps, the Giants are freeing that money up for something. The whole reason why McAdoo was kept around was to limit the transitions around Eli to get the best out of the remaining 4-5 years of his career. The Giants have a lot of holes to fill, so they need all the money they can get. But my assumption is that we are going to see them go after some defensive lineman in free agency and those guys don't come cheap.
all good moves, time for a team makeover...
An impact Defensive Lineman...
...a big WR to take pressure off ODB...
...a pass blocking OT...
...and a FS to correct the McCourty whiff.
I think we take care of those first, and then start filling in where we can.
Roster holes??
The Giants just got rid of 3 unreliable over 30 year old players...who would have been roster holes as soon as training camp starts...good riddance...the Giants are better off saving those spots for young, hungry, talented players like 21 year old Bobby Hart...who will give the Giants a better chance of playing a full season for far less money...
I think these moves are a no brainer...

That's an odd characterization from somebody who reacted this way to the prospect of the Giants paying up for McCourty a year ago:
put the $$$ into the D-Line. Dont buy a bunch of DBs when your line stinks
Would much rather beef up the D-Line than throw a bunch of $$$ at McCourty or Rahim Moore
when u have a great front 7 it makes it much easier to play S
If only the 2015 Giants had added Jerry Hughes (and his five sacks)... - ( New Window )
My point is - I expect Reese to take another swing.
Exhibit 1. Von Miller - after he gets his money, does his play improve, stay the same, or decrease? The money says his play will decrease. What's the X factor on a new team if somebody outbids Denver? (not that this would happen)
I honestly hope the Giants eyes don't get big when looking at some of these FA's. I don't think they'll overbuy, it's never been the Giants way. I prefer stockpiling up on the "above average" FA's
I'd hate for us to sign two or three mega deals and for these guys to come in and play "average" now that they have the really big money tucked away. Sorry, but look at SUH this year for Detroit - his worst year as a pro.
So Reese isn't correcting his mistakes here?
I'd like to see a solid FA WR signing if one shakes loose. As well as an obvious OL and DL FA signing. I would rather open the bank and pay Jenkins at CB than Prince, He's a better corner, and usually plays full seasons. Then address depth in the draft. I hope they resign Ayers and JPP, add a solid DT and look to build on the depth in the draft as well.
This team could use some TE help, and a solid RB, but with vereen and jennings both under contract I don't see them shopping again for one in FA, but rather the draft. Would love to see them take Elliot if the D talent doesn't fit or is gone by 10.

So, you're finally admitting he is responsible for these mistakes?
CB: Janoris Jenkins, Jerraud Powers
LB Danny Trevathan
S: Tashaun Gipson
OL: Donald Stephenson, Amini Silatolu
WR: Mohammad Sanu, Brian Quick
Since when is signing older vet the way to go?

Good post.....I am wondering how much of that avail money is actually going to go to "brand new" players........we have seen a host of teams try to stock their team thru FA and it backfires.
My question: how can this avail money be used to extend current players? Just for example, a player like Hankins. Before he hits free agency, we re-work the deal to keep him in blue for five years instead of just two more.
MLB Danny Trevathan
FS Tashaun Gipson
WR Marvin Jones Jr.
TE Dwayne Allen
RG Alex Boone
Among others, of course
Do they have to decide right now? If so, wouldn't the smart play to always defer cuts to post-6/1? That way, if you decide you wish you hadn't deferred it, you can just leave $2.5MM (in this case) of cap dollars unspent and let them roll over to next year. Essentially, you could decide later whether or not to defer it while giving yourself maximum flexibility in the current year in case you need the space.
Traditionally, Reese tries to patch as many holes as possible in FA so he has more flexibility in the draft. I would guess that we're going to see a defense focused FA, coming away with upgrades at S/CB, possibly DE, and a lower tiered addition at MLB.

Re: Trevathan - during the super bowl they showed all LBs on the Broncos fastest straight line speed in 2015 (guess it was from recorded in televised games) and Trevathan was the fastest of their LBs...
My guess, three years from competing for a Championship and that is if McAdoo and Reese get lucky.
McAdoo signed for four years, will need to show real progress in next two years or he will be out.
Manning and Beckham still the only sure thing, if neither gets hurt --- the rest are just supporting cast ( and not very good and keeps changing ).

Trevathan's knee scares me. Would he wind up another Beason?

Sometimes that's not the worst thing. We've seen teams outbid for talent and never get the ROI.

I don't mean to suggest it was a bad idea to cut these guys. I just mean that the reactions of "woo hoo!" are probably not really considering the cost of filling these three spots in FA. If that's how the Giants go to fill the spots, the 12 M freed up will probably not be sufficient unless we are shopping on the discount rack. The dead money is sunk costs, as was mentioned, and I'm good with the cuts, but the Giants didn't generate some financial windfall today. It is a real acknowledgement by Mgmt that we needed to move on.
Newhouse is likely as good as a 31 year old Beatty, coming off two surgeries and playing a relatively unfamiliar position. Newhouse makes a million and they still have Jerry making about the same. Neither player is a permanent starter but they can spot start and are good backups with bargain contracts.
Giants don't need to cut him until they need that cap space to sign someone else.
I hope the Giants do a good job of getting the word out to agents that there are going to be some real opportunities for UDFAs to come in and win not only spots on the roster, but to potentially get some decent burn.
It could give them a leg up on attracting some of the more desirable UDFAs
Obviously if UDFA is the highlight of the offseason, we are all going to be very sad. But this crossed my mind as a potential positive even after the draft is over.

Thanks goodness and nevermind the dead money.
The dead money is there, once you sign a player to a contract....it doesn't disappear....it's there to the end of the contract.....
So cutting a player, and worrying about dead money is senseless.....whether he plays or is cut, that money is built into the cap negatively....what controls Beatty's fate, is one, his physical condition, two, whether he is willing to restructure, three, what might be available in free agency, and fourth, what is available in the draft.....
Fact is, he is 31.....coming back from not one, but two injuries.....there is no way he is getting an offer, anything near the 6.675M he is getting this year....if he shows up with physical problems in OTA's, or doesn't restructure, you have to seriously look for a replacement...
We all knew Beason was gone....
There HAS TO BE someone better than Schwartz out there, with a better medical history and talent, than this guy....
Cruz, has to restructure.....he is a complete unknown.....we ASSUME the calf has healed....we still have no idea if that knee is solid, he never played on it last season.....you have to plan as though, Cruz will not make it....if he does, it's a bonus....
JPP despite the injury to the hand, has a slight hold on the Giants, because they don't have, one single DE on this roster than can start....Wynn took a huge step back last year, and OO is looking like wishful thinking....You make an offer not to the 2011 JJP, but to the 2015 JPP, who had one sack in 8 games......
