More like retires after getting cut.

is that better, worse or no impact re the salary cap?

Good for him

he has suffered so many injuries that it is wise to avoid putting his body through more pain. I can see him getting into coaching and I wouldn't be surprised if we see him as a coaching intern in a couple of years like Armstead.

the chicken or the egg.

I'd prefer if it was retire. Maybe they told him they were going to release him and he said he'd retire. He already said depending o his surgery he might retire....

Yup.
He had been talking retirement not too long ago
jcn56 : 2/10/2016 3:16 pm : link
It's altogether possible (although unlikely) that the Giants didn't even reach that point with Beason, and he just retired.

Either way, best of luck to him.
once a giant always a giant
mirwin : 2/10/2016 3:17 pm : link
not a hurricanes fan but always enjoyed those early 00s teams including big beast, i always thought when healthy early in his career he could have a Patrick Willis like career. Talent was all there.

shall we remember him from his rap song as the big Beast?

He's a good guy whose body just didn't hold up.
Anakim : 2/10/2016 3:19 pm : link
I think he has a future in the broadcast booth or on the sidelines
He can't stay healthy at this point
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/10/2016 3:21 pm : link
so it doesn't make any sense to keep trying. His time with the Giants was an attempt to resurrect his career. It's not happening, kind of like LaVar Arrington.

thanks
I would have loved to see him play healthy...

unfortunately it just wasn't in the cards. Best wishes to him in retirement.
So do the Giants
giantgiantfan : 2/10/2016 3:42 pm : link
incur his dead money since he retired?
The only way to reduce the ~$1.5MM dead money hit...
Big Blue Blogger : 2/10/2016 3:51 pm : link
...would be to go after him to claw back a portion of his signing bonus, which the Giants won't do.
Wow,
Mike in Long Beach : 2/10/2016 5:04 pm : link
He was fantastic when healthy.

I hope he finds his way in something else. Best of luck, Jon.
Rank your disappointment - Arrington vs. Beason?
Enrico Pallazzo : 2/10/2016 5:08 pm : link
Both, if healthy, could have been beasts for our defense. Neither, unfortunately, made much of a lasting impact due to injuries.
Enrico or may I call you Frank?
GiantsFan84 : 2/10/2016 5:13 pm : link
Arrington was the bigger disappointment because he looked dominant again in that Dallas game prior to his achillies injury.

It is actually better, no dead money.
arrington

looked to be amazing to my recollection before he got hurt.
Good player

Sadly health was never on his side. Our defense looked potent when we had Beason/Hill/Rolle in the middle of the field. Now we're baby doodoo soft in that area. We need to get back to being tough in the middle.

He was great in the game he got hurt. I remember thinking how he finally looked like an impact player.
He was fantastic?
Doomster : 2/10/2016 8:06 pm : link
He was an average linebacker who made plays......but compared to what he was playing with, it made him look like all world...
Thanks for putting in the hard work and being a role model

Best of luck going forward Jon

I know you wanted nothing more then to give it your all.
guy
bc4life : 2/10/2016 9:36 pm : link
gave it his best shot for team and his body failed him, and fans piss on his back as he walks out the door.
Doomster - average?
bc4life : 2/10/2016 9:38 pm : link
swing and a miss. When he first came over and was healthy made the defense a lot better. to a man, the players and coaches all said that.
How could he not
Doomster : 2/10/2016 9:56 pm : link
make it better, with what we were trotting out there for linebackers....he made plays and average linebacker would make, and compared to the rest of the LBers on this team, he looked like all world...

Factor in the non-starter qb's he faced, he certainly wasn't "fantastic"....maybe Captain Fantastic, b ut not fantastic....
you're confusing playing better than those
bc4life : 2/10/2016 10:07 pm : link
around you with making those around you better.
You can't say Beason didn't give it his all
David in LA : 2/11/2016 2:56 am : link
unfortunately we got him at the very tail end of his career. He played very well the year we traded for him. The next year he got hurt again and that seemed to be the last we ever saw of him as a great player. I was always a fan of the Giants/U of Miami players, they've given us good players for the most part (Armstead, Barrow, Shockey, Rolle, Beason, and a few others I'm sure I missed).
Semantics
Torrag : 2/12/2016 4:31 am : link
Convo goes like this...

Beason to Giants: I'd prefer to wait to see how my rehab goes to decide on my status for next season.

Giants: If you don't 'retire' now you'll be cut tomorrow.

Beason: OIC. Then I'll retire.
