In Spags defense. He's smart, knows the defense, has leader qualities, is capable of blitzing and we know Spags loves his A gap blitzes.
-Move Kennard to the middle, bring Brinkley back as insurance.
-Sign Bruce Irvin to play strong side
-Draft Jaylon Smith to play weakside when he's back healthy. Thomas/Casillas could hold it down until then. And Jaylon has the ability to be our Mike if the Kennard experiment fails.
One of the Giants' biggest moves was changing the strength & conditioning coach. That's been a hot topic on BBI but not so much elsewhere. If they cut down on injuries, guys like Kennard, who have missed a lot of time, could really take off.
stay healthy, looks like a fit at MLB. Forget this rushing the passer OLB BS. He is big tough and smart, as well as fast enough compared to the stiffs we have been using there.
are entirely different roles, skillsets, and most importantly instincts. Kennard also has demonstrated some ability rushing off the edge, that shouldn't be minimized so easily (and no, blitzing the A gap is not the same).
I'm not so sure DK has the lateral movement, COD, backpeddle, or speed to run down the ball sideline to sideline.

This sounds like an interesting plan. But do you take Smith at 10 or do you try to trade back and get him later. He's not going to make it into the second round.
I don't know much about Sheppard, but I know he seems more popular among Giants fans than Dolphins fans who say he was a liability against the run. I'm not sure why his name is being thrown around so much here.
Brinkley is a good rotational player and excellent backup
Spags was quoted as being happy with his play but thought it would have been preferable to have him at the start of the season so he would not have to learn the defense on the job.
I feel more comfortable with Brinkley than Kennard, and Kennard has yet to prove he can stay healthy.

You seem to forget Kennard started at mike backer for USC as a sophomore my guy. And he played well for a young player notching 72 tackles 7 for a loss and 2 sacks.
Two of our scouts said on finding giants that they believed he could play inside. Hermann said in an article that we have worked him at mike incase of injury and they felt he could play there. Casillas said Kennard had the mic in his helmet and was making the calls.
As far as blitzing the a gap and rushing the edge, obviously both are different but Kennard has shown the timing it takes to get home. It's actually his explosion that hinders him as an edge rusher. That wouldn't necessarily hurt him blitzing from mike as timing is most important.
Also, Kennard is rarely ever off the field playing the majority of our defensive snaps (when healthy). I think being a 3 down player says a lot about his abilities as a backer.
You have to remember we aren't asking him to play mike in a Tampa 2.

I take Smith at 10 and don't look back. He's a rare talent. Top 5 pick if not for the injury. Getting him at 10 is a steal. Yea he might miss the first 10 games of his rookie season but I'm drafting this guy for what he'll give us the next 10 years. We can't be short sighted in that regard.
The move to inside helps him and the team he plays 1st and 2nd down on 3rd he is off the field.
Early in the season when he was playing well, they were using Kennard in coverage. Not sure about the move to Mike. They need to get speed at all three levels of their defense. Brinkley, though an all-time tough, guy and great team player, can't run. Spagnuolo made the comment late in the year that he wished the Giants would have had Brinkley for the entire off-season. That makes me think they will choose him to start in 16. I think that's a mistake. You can't play good defense in the NFL these days unless your linebackers can run. There are too many passes thrown .

Spagnuolo is playing defense circa 2005 which is part of the reason his defenses are getting roasted alive.
Unless St Stephen of the Blitz had his head deep in the chips and salsa during the Super Bowl, he saw defenses with fast linebackers and MLB's that could run sideline to sideline and outside backers who could stay with RB's and get into passing lanes on either side. Many of the posters here are children of the 80's who are still stuck in the big, strong MLB, WLB who can cover, SLB who plays the run roles.
Kennard should be the MLB (provided he can stay on the field- a major If) and Brinkley should be on the bench. There really is no full-time role anymore for the big, slow LB which is why Minny let him go in the first place. Unfortunately, outside of Kennard, that is all we have.
And if you think Kennard is too small, he weighs 15 lbs more than Kuechly.
We just got rid of a guy that couldn't stay on the field
Where we differ is your projection is largely built on his college performance, and some scouting soundbytes. Whereas mine is based on what he's demonstrated in the pros, and where the coaches have actually deployed him on the field in games (despite the soundbytes from Finding Giants), and what I see as his strengths/weaknesses, etc.
Spags doesn't run many Tampa-2 principles, but that really only means the MIKE drops aren't as deep into the levels of the defense. He still has to handle all MIKE assignments, he's not funneling the ball by the DL, etc.

Rey is unlikely to leave Cincinnati.

Yes, Vincent Rey. I mentioned him the other day.
Do it.
