Newhouse and Jerry

Rjanyg : 2/10/2016 7:16 pm
I know Reese just cleared a lot of space but is it possible Reese and McAdoo think either of them are starters for next year or even fall back options if we don't draft or sign viable replacements for Schwartz and Beatry?

At times they played decent but I certainly hope they have at least a RT in mind in free agency. Hart could be the next in line for Right Guard.

If we target a RT I would guess Mitchell Schwartz is the best one
Probably

Both should be cut though.

Why would you cut cheap serviceable depth?

Makes zero sense
They both have bargain contracts
Vanzetti : 2/10/2016 7:22 pm : link
not likely they are going anywhere
I doubt it
illmatic : 2/10/2016 7:23 pm : link
but I guess it depends on what happens with the defensive side of the ball in free agency. If they have to spend a ton of money to repair it, I think he would consider leaving someone like Newhouse as a starter. I have to think that Hart has a pretty shot at RG.

Flowers-Pugh-Richburg-Hart-Schwartz sounds like a pretty damn good line if they can manage to sign him. Jerry and Newhouse as some experienced yet not too old depth and they can draft another guy in the later rounds too. I'd be happy with that heading into next season.

That's idiocy. Some of you guys expect probowlers at every position, even backups.

If we cut Jerry and Newhouse who are our backups next year? These guys aren't nearly as bad as their reputation around here.

In fact, I'd say you could count on one hand the number of teams with backups better than Newhouse and Jerry.

Both were signed to be backups
JonC : 2/10/2016 7:28 pm : link
I expect them to go after a FA RT, and possibly a RG (with Hart in the mix).

on the roster right now because they're healthy. But they'll be the first to be replaced by other veterans or even a mid round draft pick. One or both could be gone after FA and the draft. The most you can say about either is that they might be in camp. Same for Mosley.

that would stink......
Mitchell Schwartz might be a hard sell

Acid, I completely forgot about Mosley but I thought he was a free agent? Reynolds is a free agent as well. Jones is under contract. If we added nobody our line is : Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, Hart, Newhouse with Jerry, Jones and Cleary as depth.
Both should be

upgraded, even if you just need them for depth. They suck.

If you would please enlighten us with a list the numerous backup offensive linemen in the NFL that are better than Jerry and Newhouse it would be appreciated.

Ok go...
Agreed

Mosley and Reynolds are FAs. You're right. I don't think Mosley will be offered a contract. Reynolds maybe something above vet minimum.
Newhouse and Jerry
BillT : 2/10/2016 8:15 pm : link
Are backups. That's what they were signed to be and they're better than average backups. They are here to do ST duty and step in for a play or two here and there or an occasional start. It was never intended for them to play 16 games. They aren't the problem. Losing multiple starters from the line for multiple years due to injury is the problem.
There has to be some vet minimum guys
est1986 : 2/10/2016 8:18 pm : link
That can play as good or better. If McAdoo thinks otherwise I won't be upset they both at the very least have experience of playing in this offense, as far as backups we could do wors. Let's focus on bringing in some impactful starters.
Newhouse and Jerry
Glover : 2/10/2016 8:26 pm : link
two names that will go down in infamy.
Agree,
Doomster : 2/10/2016 8:52 pm : link
they are backups.....unless there are upgrades for a similar price...

The line now is either

Flowers/Pugh/Richburg/FA/FA

or

FA/Pugh/Richburg/FA/Flowers

or possibly

Flowers/FA/Richburg/FA/Pugh

I see Hart as a b/u, not a starter.....

Once again growing pains, for an OL adding two new pieces, and the added possibility of reshuffled players....

They may be backups
Milton : 2/10/2016 9:44 pm : link
But they are currently the two highest salaried players on the OL. NTTAWWT
Jerry's inconsistent
bc4life : 2/10/2016 9:47 pm : link
sometimes okay, sometimes inexplicably bad.

Newhouse - maybe McAdoo thinks he can salvage him.

Bargain contracts work both ways, easy to keep easy to cut
If they STAY backups and don't have to play much, fine
David B. : 2/11/2016 9:52 am : link
But neither is a starting quality player. And FWIW, neither was G. Schwartz -- not in NY. When he was on the field, and that wasn't often, he was terrible. Maybe he was always hurt, but he was also always terrible.

The fact of it is that ALL last year, the Giants simply could NOT run to the right. Not even for 1 yard.

Didn't Geoff say he didn't want to play with his brother?
Why would you cut either?
Matt M. : 2/11/2016 10:05 am : link
They are relatively cheap and are here really for depth. These are the kinds of players you need for OL depth.

Mr. Nickels, answer back to this....
I have no problems with both guys staying on as backups
djm : 2/11/2016 10:31 am : link
..
The thing is, would you want either or both starting
micky : 2/11/2016 12:07 pm : link
and playing for long periods of time? Taken the injury history into account, they'd most likely be starting games (either/or) for the season.
