Weird stat on Olivier Vernon

Andy in Boston : 2/10/2016 9:27 pm
64 games at DE in the NFL.... Zero batted balls/passés defended. Compared to 34 by JPP. He's on the short side for sure 6'2, but I thought this was strange. Not saying it's a concern , but that is another thing that JPP brings to the table that people don't realize .... Him and Watt lead the NFL in this category in the last few years. Thoughts?
Don't

think he's a great fit. He's short, doesn't get a ton of hurries, supposedly a cheap shot artist.
Problem is

There are so few pass rushers that are going to be available.
Von Miller is pretty short.

Jim Nantz was taller in the interviews. I was surprised how small Miller was.
A batted ball

Is a nullified play .... JPP has 34 of those .... It's equal to a run stop with no gain .... Very underrated stat.

Maybe so, but that doesn't mean we should spend on someone who isn't a great fit. Bring back JPP and Ayers, spend a high pick on a DE, Owa's second year should be better. That's a solid foursome.

Agreed .... But they may need to go the DT route in FA and get a pass rusher that way. Wilkerson can rush the passer.

Nantz is listed as 6'3" on a random, perhaps unreliable good search.

Very underrated

..and I believe Malik Jackson led the league in batted balls this year.

Has not shown enough to become a 10 mill or more DE in the NFL he teases you with one or two great games but not four or five. We have seen enough of these types of players look at the talent on the Phins DL he should have run into 10 sacks just from the QB avoiding the Wake and Sue. His play against the run has improved but his sacks numbers have not which was his best ability before.
Nantz is about 63

I'm 62 and he was slightly taller than me

Disagree. He had 11.5 sacks in 2014 and apparently for most of last season he was playing injured. Can't just look at numbers.
should read 2013

JPP is no longer a great fit and never will be IMHO..

This kind of thinking is how the Giants defense got to be LAST in the league. JPP is toast. I dont get the support for him here. If he wants to play for vet minimum then fine, otherwise, he walks. I think there is a culture issue here. This guy blew his fingers off and missed the whole season. I know he played in 8 games, but he couldnt wrap up. I dont care how "disruptive" BBI seems to think he was. Giants need to get rid of him and anyone else who selfishly fucks the team over. You can say it's an accident, he didnt mean to sabotage the defense, but his flat out STUPIDITY did just that. Anything above the vet minimum would be overpaying for this has been.
Vernon, Hali, and draft Lawson. Cant count on OO for shit. I agree with signing Ayers though. He actually produced in 2015.
Yeah. Its not about the sack numbers
KWALL2 : 2/11/2016 12:45 pm : link
Check out this guys QB pressure numbers? They suck! He doesn't consistently get to the QB.

The only thing he consistently does is pile up penalties.

We must do better than Vernon.

When you watch Vernon what exactly does he do for you say he is a guy the Giants need. I do not get it.

JPP is a better player 1 handed than Vernon is with 2.

Ayers is a better player than Vernon is

Vernon has the talent to be special but he has not done it I'm a big Phins fan he just does not produce from game to game. As I said he teases you but he disappears way to often when he should be destroying his man on physical ability alone. Wake is not as big as him but wins with speed power and desire not much difference between them physically but that desire is lacking greatly in Vernon.

There is no way JPP is a better player than Vernon with one hand that's just not true. If I was going to pay one of them 8 mil a year hands down it would be Vernon however i would not pay Vernon more than 10 mil absolutely not. As for JPP if he would take 4 mil and a bunch of performance bonuses i would still wonder is 4 mil too much.

Yep, saw Nantz was 6'3" - surprised me. Even so Miller looked to be a good 2 inches shorter and really not very heavy. I just expected him to be "bigger" than what I saw during the interviews. My guess would have been 6'1" 235.

But My point was Oliver at 6'2" is about the same as Miller, if not slightly taller.

IMO will resign with the Phins so that's one bad contract we could miss out on. Now his signing does give us a good shot at RB Miller but he to could not want to leave his hometown and a possible team on the rise.
