CHICAGO
Biggs Chicago Tribune: Could the Bears land free agents Malik Jackson and/or Danny Trevanthan?
"Jackson isn’t an elite pass rusher but he’d he’s a very good defensive end and has the ability to flourish in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 scheme. So, I think there will be considerable interest in him on the open market and he indicated at the Super Bowl that he’s very much looking forward to the process when I spoke to him. He’d give the Bears a cornerstone player on the defensive line. Again, he’s not going to be a dynamic pass rusher but he’s tough and physical and he’ll be good vs. the pass and the run. Trevathan was the team’s leading tackler and would be an instant upgrade for the Bears at inside linebacker. He moves real well and will be paid well too. There is no question the Bears need to be better at inside linebacker but I don’t know if spending $7 million (Trevathan might get that much per season) is the best move at that position. We’ve seen players coming off Super Bowl winners get overpaid in free agency and they’re not the same player. Why is that? Well, if the Bears sign Trevathan, he’s not bringing Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware, Wolfe (a defensive end that had his contract extended last month), Jackson and others with him. Plug him into the Bears defense and he makes them better. But he probably doesn’t look quite as good as he does in Denver. Gather what I am saying? Sure, I think the Bears consider both of these players. What the Bears really need to do is draft guys like Jackson and Trevathan. Jackson was a fifth-round pick and Trevathan was a sixth-round pick in 2012. That’s what you call ideal draft and development. It takes time and patience and you’ve got to hit. Bears coach John Fox did just that in Denver."

This is a very salient point -- the Bears have money to spent

What Marvez says is consistent with what Schefter, Garafolo, Raanan and Rapoport have all said. McAdoo was not ordained; Philly forced the Giants hand.

I think it was John Mara himself who wanted a head coach with prior experience. Marrone was completely unacceptable to Reese. Smith was the compromise (and Hue Jackson was going to be another live possibility until he scratched).

Go to 24:00 of the Papa-cast for Marvez's comments.
