Fassel changed his mind from CAR to DEN because of Cams shoe

OdellBeckhamJr : 2/11/2016 11:54 am
“All of the numbers pointed to Carolina. And when I saw Cam Newton walk out in gold shoes, MVP, I switched my mind right then. I said that’s not what a starting quarterback, MVP, leading his team — and I had a lot of respect for him during the season — that’s not what happens. You don’t do that. And I said this guy’s already become soft and that’s what he was."

and yet that would fit within the narrative that I have in my head.
And thus, Jim Fassel accomplishes mission #1

as silly as what Fassel said is

Those shoes were pretty foolish too
I think what made him soft is that

I think Carolina came in a little full of themselves

Also....Keep in mind that Denver was not far removed from getting pummeled in a Super Bowl. They had to have come in hungry.

Yep. It happens and destroying an opponent in a conference title game is fun for the fans of the winning team, but I'm more than willing to suffer through a nerve-racking close game before moving onto the Superbowl.

I'm not being critical of Fassel or anybody on that Giants team, or even Carolina, but it's easy to see how it happens.

I agree about overconfidence.
81_Great_Dane : 2/11/2016 1:10 pm : link
I interviewed Michael Strahan a while back. He talked about how the intensity jumps from pre-season to regular season (one reason not to get too excited about guys who shine in pre-season); from early season to a late-season playoff push; from late season to playoffs; and from playoffs to Super Bowl.

To me it looked like Carolina wasn't ready for that last jump in intensity -- like they were overconfident and when they fell behind and couldn't get going, they weren't able to refocus.

The thing about that kind of overconfidence is, when adversity hits, it doesn't turn into resolve, it turns into fear. Carolina looked overconfident at first and afraid later.

It worked for the Giants in 2007

That team talked a lot, and even made a gimmick about playing up the underdog role in the face of the everyone telling them they would lose.

I wonder if Cam has a Marino-like career, not as prolific a passer but great runner at QB and never wind the SB.

With few exceptions, it seems like a team that steamrolls an opponent prior to the Super Bowl tends to have a let-down in the big game especially if the other team really had to fight a battle to get there.

The 2014 Patriots are an exception that comes to mind, but it's notable that they have a very well-coached and seasoned squad.
Did Fassell announce this on air before the game?
MetsAreBack : 2/11/2016 1:39 pm : link

Otherwise i'm inclined to believe this is retrospective nonsense ... and even if it isnt, who gives a crap.

Anyway, was funny to see SportingNews article rip even his argument to shreds.
What color were Kerry Collins shoes?
Cruzin : 2/11/2016 1:40 pm : link

I know his pants were yellow from pissing in them after the first series against that Ravens D.

Cam is the best football player in the league at this time. He faced the best defense in the league and got his ass kicked. He didn't like that and acted like a baby. He'll learn.

Fassel, what a joke, it's gotta be the shoes.

walking to the locker room before the game and the people at my party were making fun of him for his outfit and shoes. My little cousin said Cam looked more like he was going to perform at the halftime show than play QB. Think he was wearing floods too which really made the shoes stand out..
ehh
PaulBlakeTSU : 2/11/2016 2:14 pm : link
I think this is a stretch. Cam could have very easily won wearing those same gold cleats.

Apollo Creed lost to Ivan Drago when he was overconfident and wore those American Flag trunks, but then Rocky wore those same trunks and beat the Russian's ass.

That the Fassel Super Bowl would have been a vastly different game if Keith Hamilton's DEFENSIVE HOLDING ON A DEFENSIVE TACKLE isn't called on Armstead's pick 6 in the second quarter. Game would have been 7-7 at halftime.

I'd like to see some statistics as to how many defensive tackles have been called for holding in league history.

Defensive ends get called for it sometimes because the running back tries to leak out for a screen and the ends grab them once they realize they are beat but if I remember correctly it was a PLAY ACTION pass, Hamilton tackled Jamal Lewis going up the gut after a fake handoff.

As you can tell- still pisses me off to this day.

I'm with you. Yes, I'm still pissed about that too. 7-7 at the half and that game is entirely different in the final 30 minutes.

I don't think the game would have been all that different. The Giants still needed their offense to do something, and it wasn't going to happen the way Collins was playing.

LOL. Oh man. I say the exact same thing. The Hammer somehow had a rep for holding. He had been called for holding like that a few times that year. In a superbowl though? Tackling a running back within 5 yards after a fake handoff? Awful call and definitely changed the complexion of that game. I love it paul. I can recall so many awful losses and bad calls that led to losses. I am sure it has been done but if I have more time Ill start a thread top 20 giant losses.I will just pontificate on one painful..painful loss.-How about 1988 to the jets last game of the season. We win we have the 2 seed and a bye in the playoffs, we lose we need the 9ers to beat the rams that night just to make the playoffs. Giants have 3 injuries to their Offensive line in that game. Some guy Ken Rose gets 3 sacks jets get 8 sacks but Giants still take the lead late behind a nice drive led by flip. around 2 minutes left and Bruce harper gets a great kick return, jets painfully drive down the field and win the game with a few seconds left on a pass from Ken O Brien to Al toon..over the outstretched hand of Tom Flynn. We lose the Jets beat us and manage to go 8-8 under Bruce Coslet and of course at night the 9ers wisely laid down like dogs against the rams. We were the only team that could have beaten the 9ers in the playoffs. That was the last game George Martin or Harry Carson ever played in as they retired after that game. Awful...awful loss.
I, too, will go to my grave believing that phantom hold
glowrider : 2/11/2016 4:43 pm : link
cost us the game. That int brought the momentum back to our side and gave hope for just enough time for the penalty to be even more of a disaster. Any chance or hope in that game ended with that penalty.

That said, they still would have had to beat an all-time Defense. Not impossible, just improbable.

that and a non-existant holding call that nullified a pic 6...

Geez, I didn't see this post and just posted the same thing.
It was a play action pass and the RB that was the fake hand off RB was grabbed by Hamilton..
I don't think it wouldve mattered
jnoble : 2/11/2016 5:31 pm : link
Maybe the score wouldve been closer, but we weren't beating the Ravens that day. Nope. They were a defensive buzzsaw that Kerry and the boys had no hope of putting up TD's against.

A couple people on BBI have suggested that since Kerry got hurt in the game, he shouldve been benched for Jason Garret who hadn't pissed himself like Collins. But even with that it's not like we suddenly wouldve started scoring TDs against that team

Remember who the opposing QB was that day. Trent Dilfer wasn't nearly as good of a QB as Collins. So you never know what happens. Football is a momentum game. Look at the Vikings NFCC game. 41-0? Really.
