The #Giants add Martin Mayhew to front office. Takes spot of Matt Harriss who went to Lions. So help w/contracts + special projects
Cue people complaining about importing Lions decisionmakers.. Â
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today announced the hiring of Martin Mayhew as their director of football operations/special projects.
Mayhew, the Detroit Lions’ former general manager, will work closely with assistant general manager Kevin Abrams on all aspects of the salary cap, CBA compliance and player contract negotiations. He will also handle special projects as assigned by general manager Jerry Reese.
The Giants had an opening in their front office after the departure of Matt Harriss, who recently joined the Lions as their vice president of football administration. Harriss had been the Giants’ director of football operations.
Mayhew spent 15 seasons with the Lions. He was the team’s general manager from late 2008 until last November.
Mayhew originally joined the Lions’ front office in February 2001, as senior director of football administration/staff counsel. He was promoted to senior vice president of football administration/legal affairs on Feb. 3, 2003 and on Oct. 14, 2004, he was appointed senior vice president and assistant general manager.
Mayhew played nine years in the NFL as a cornerback for Buffalo (1988), Washington (1989-92) and Tampa Bay (1993-96). He was the Bills’ 10th-round selection in the 1988 NFL Draft and was a starter on the Redskins’ Super Bowl XXVI championship team.
Mayhew is a graduate of Florida State and Georgetown University’s Law Center.
Reese must want to really get fired. Let's hire the former GM from one of the worst franchises in sports to be special projects and assistant capologist. Lions were one of the worst in dead money last season with close to $20 million in dead money. What it worst almost $10 million was for a player playing on another team, Suh. Quite a resume he has. Woooooof!
As unsuccessful as the Lions have been recently (and historically) I like this guy's drafts. Hopefully he has some influence on players and another informed opinion will lead to some good drafts and free agent pick ups in the future.
Do you hire Ross's eventual replacement and have him work on special projects but in reality it creates a transition.
Eventual, maybe - short term (as in after this draft)? No, because he could just as easily wait on the sidelines for a couple of months until the changes would be official.
RE: LMAO hire a castoff from a loser organization Â

Doesn't look to me like collegiate scouting is really this guy's forte. He rose in the DET ranks as a legal counsel-- a contracts guy. I can't see how this has much of anything to do with Ross.

'Special projects' - guess Mayhew is taking over the Penske file.
