Hankins and ODB and the cap

1st and 10 : 2/13/2016 11:41 pm
A lot on here have been talking about signing 2 to 3 top tier free agents this year but I don't think we can do that as within the next 2 years we will have Hankins and ODB to extend. They both will take up a lot of cap room each, my guess is north of $10 million each per year. I am not a cap guy but I thought this was a point worth discussing.
beckham will become the highest paid wr in the nfl

you are right
We can extend Hankins now...

I'd be disappointed if this doesn't get done this offseason
I almost forgot

To mention Pugh who will also cost us as he has been a starter for 3 years now.
We can absolutely sign 3 top tier free agents

Plus still have money for Odell, Hankins & Pugh. I certainly wouldn't worry about it. Odell is essentially under contract for 4 more years. He has 3 years left on his rookie contract plus a year of the franchise tag.

Pugh has been average to slightly above average at best. His contract shouldn't be too bad.

They can use the option on him, at least. So he has two years left.
I would think next year would be better.

For two reasons:

1) Eli's cap number drops $5million freeing up room.
2) cap should be higher.

I'm no expert but the $5m could go straight to Hank.
OBJ isn't eligible for an extension yet under CBA rules
Torrag : 2/14/2016 7:28 am : link
...so that isn't an issue. Eli's contract decelerates after this season as well.

In the case of Hankins and Pugh I'd like to see Hankins get healthy and play well before extending him. In Pugh's case can we get him through a season without a concussion before dropping big money in his lap.
Even with those players coming up for resigning in the next two years

There is still plenty of money to sign FA. Also, the cap is still growing.
I like Pugh

But in not handing a guy like him a blank check.

I don't view him as an absolute 'must keep'.

He's a nice player and seems like a really positive team guy, but I think he's probably the 2nd, if not 3rd, best player on a really strong OL.
Sorry,

Hankins' value dropped after this season....he was not a force on the line up to his injury....and yes, I know who was playing to the left and right of him.....was he in a funk because of this? I don't know if anybody knows....but I saw a lot of one on ones he did not win...

Want to see him have an impact season, before opening the vault...
Totally agree

Pugh and Hankins still have something prove, consistency wise. Then they'll talk extensions.
Just remember after Hankins

Is Bromley(sucks) and Kuhn(even worse). We need Hankins plus someone else.
:)
