Raanan's first mock draft pick

JordanRaanan : 3/2/2016 2:31 pm
Nailed last year's pick a month in advance when nobody considered Flowers anywhere near Top 10. Will try to do the same again. This is a little more conventional. Still have a few weeks to alter my pick after collecting more information. This is subject to change, but for now ... it's Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves.

I'd be v happy with that

Legit elite prospect at one of the Giants most valued positions.

As for the pick, I like it, especially since you said Jack and Stanley are already gone.

I second this motion
We need
ryanmkeane : 3/2/2016 2:45 pm : link
some ballers in the secondary. VHIII fits the mold of a true cover corner with elite skills across the board, his combine was off the charts. Would love this pick - especially since we can put him, DRC and Prince (if we resign) on the field all at once. Hargreaves does remind me a lot of Mathieu so I was happy to see Jordan bring that up.
Would be great if we could know for sure he'd be there
BillT : 3/2/2016 2:51 pm : link
It would take the pressure off the signing a FA at CB. Hard thought to roll the dice and count on him being there and him getting snatched up before our pick.
Ca t be upset with a top CB
superspynyg : 3/2/2016 2:54 pm : link
Unless we give a lot of cash to a FA CB.
LOVE the pick

Perhaps, but he is a two-way force at times.

Well Jordan
mrvax : 3/2/2016 3:20 pm : link
it's really hard to pick the draft without seeing what kind of presents we get in free agency. If the Giants sign a solid CB, you'd be best off revising your choice.

However, draft held today I can see Hargreaves as a good choice.
Jordan -
ryanmkeane : 3/2/2016 3:24 pm : link
Stanley has been knocked for "work ethic" but I honestly don't know how this came about. Have you heard this? The guy was great his entire career at ND.
Fine

pick, but I think hes gone by #10.
If Hargreaves is there
Peppers : 3/2/2016 3:33 pm : link
I'm all for it.

Problem is I have a hard time believing that in this pass first league 9 teams will pass on the best cover corner in the draft.
Makes a lot more sense than an RB.

Not Impressed
Front Row Endzone 102 : 3/2/2016 3:44 pm : link
At least after watching the following review.

He is fast and can cover well.

But he does not jam at the line, does not tackle well, and avoids contact if he sees that another defender could get there.

Vernon Hargreaves not impressive in these clips - ( New Window )

A) Hargreaves III would bet the BPA
B) We need a nickel back
C) You can never have enough cover corners
D) Who knows what will happen next year with DRC and Prince
E) Prince isn't exactly durable

Additionally, NYG didn't hesitate to draft Amukamara when they already had Webster and Thomas. (Thomas was entering a contract year, but they were hoping to extend him until his preseason injury.)
Here's his combine
ryanmkeane : 3/2/2016 4:00 pm : link
highlight video with every drill. Guy looks to have great ball skills and great hands too - didn't have one issue snatching every ball.

Actually:

A. You can never have enough pass rushers.
Don't put a lot of stock in those clips
BigBlueCane : 3/2/2016 4:53 pm : link
Hargreaves played in a PHYSICAL Gator defense that was too often left to rot because of their Offense.

He's a tough, hard nosed kid.

He's the best Cornerback in this draft ahead of Alexander and Ramsey (who is a safety really).
He looked very natural
Randy in CT : 3/2/2016 4:54 pm : link
and athletic at the combine. Saw a ton of him there. As an aside.

Agree with the negatives. Looks flat out terrible on the tape.
Great cover skills and very good athlete.
Ira : 3/2/2016 5:33 pm : link
The negatives are that he's relatively short and has short arms in a league where we are seeing more tall receivers.
Nope, not gonna be the pick, sorry.

That's who I picked and I'm never right.
I've said this on another thread
RobCarpenter : 3/2/2016 7:24 pm : link
I want NO part of Hargraves. His Citrus Bowl game was atrocious. Game tape is what matters, not the combine.

Every year fans get hard-ons b/c of how someone does in the combine when they should be looking at game tape.
Hargreaves
Modus Operandi : 3/2/2016 8:19 pm : link
Isn't physical and doesn't tackle well? What? Smaller, yes...but he may be the most physical DB in the draft.

so you base you assessment off the one game you saw...

ok... nothing to see here..
Scouting reports
grizz299 : 3/2/2016 10:22 pm : link
suggest he will have trouble in the pros because of his size...and that the larger receivers will isolate wide on him and force mis matches.

If so, I say no and look at Lawson, Rankins or Stanley
I'm sorry, but as much as having a lockdown corner is great n all
chopperhatch : 3/2/2016 10:49 pm : link
The height really bothers me.

Plus, I really think Ogbah is the guy. Big OL bastard with great athleticism and length. Reminds me a ton of JPP. Makes even more sense if we bring in Williams and resign JPP. Have a rotation of MW, JPP, OO and Kerry Wynn with Hankins, Bromley, Cullen Jenkins and a 2nd/3rd rounder DT and that's a pretty nice D line rotation. Provided we don't get fisted by injuries.

I could live with Hargreaves, but I'd rather make a push for Sean Smith rather than resign Prince.

For the people saying he is to short
nygiants16 : 3/2/2016 11:06 pm : link
You do realize he is the same height as revised right?
I'd be shocked
Big Rick in FL : 3/3/2016 6:50 am : link
If he gets by Miami & Tampa. They have 1 starting CB combined. That CB is old, expensive & Miami can't deal with his wife.
VH was amazing initially for the Gators
Andy in Halifax : 3/3/2016 7:46 am : link
less so near the end at Florida. I wonder what caused the decline. Still a very good prospect and I would imagine CB would be high on the Giants list of wants.
That came out a bit rough
Andy in Halifax : 3/3/2016 8:00 am : link
He was amazing early on, looked like a sure top 3 pick. Still played great later just not quite on the level he was at as a freshman.

Would be a very good pick imo.
VH is an excellent, physical, willing tackler
JonC : 3/3/2016 8:51 am : link
especially for his size.
Not sure if we want him tackling
Capital Rs : 3/3/2016 8:58 am : link
Otherwise giants end up with Prince 2.0 - a potentially great CB who's periodically out b/c his body can't handle his physicality at the NFL level. From what I've been seeing/hearing from others, this would be a great pick though.
Good Lord
Greenpoint : 3/3/2016 9:36 am : link
You've got to laugh at someone who says "look at the game tape" and calls Hargreaves a Combine warrior. Or sees him get beat and says he sucks. All CBs get beat.

This kid's a football player. As per his game tape. Get a clue!
kid is a beast!
Gmen108021 : 3/3/2016 10:27 am : link
I would LOVE this pick, he will probably play FS in the pros but he is just like mathieu thats a good comparison minus the off the field issues or weed issues. I like him, he just knows how to make plays. has a nose for the football, more than i can say for the other shit shows we have had in the secondary, draft him let prince walk because he asks for the world and doesnt match it with world beating play. then sign a guy like sean smith or jenkins and you then have the option to move VH3 to FS and collins over to SS where he belongs down in the box blitzing making plays around the LOS. I would sign up RIGHT NOW for a secondary of VH3 at FS Collins SS DRC and sean smith as your two boundary corners.
LOOK

LOOK AT THE 3 MINUTE MARK! The ball skill is INCREDIBLE for a guy his size. he high points the ball beautifully. this kid is a stud

I love the choice but he might not drop to us.
ReneNYG1 : 3/3/2016 1:17 pm : link
As long as he can cover and get picks he can have funny looking hair all he wants,LOL He is legit I really like him as our top choice but if he is gone I am having a hard time between Elliot or Shaq.
Vernon Hargreaves III
ReneNYG1 : 3/3/2016 1:24 pm : link
To go even further heading into this draft he was my favorite player,we need turnover and he is a pick machine, and he hits hard for a corner. He does it all, this work be a great choice and I can see him leading the NFL in INT in the future.
