If I missed something and he was signed elsewhere, please just go onto another thread. Thanks.
If not, and he is still available, a couple of thoughts: I'm sure there are some unpleasant feelings on both sides but unless that bridge has been burned to the ground, perhaps they can still kiss and make up. Maybe the new OL coach can do something. If he can pass the physical why not? We thought very highly of him in the past and paid him a bazillion dollars.
All those waiting for a third or fourth rounder to step in at tackle this year, get real. We can use that # 10 pick elsewhere unless this GLARING HOLE is not solved by draft day.
Waiting for a summer cut from another team is very, very risky. So why not Beatty? Suck up whatever bad feelings there are. Gotta be pretty cheap by now.
He is not an option. We need a RT. Beatty is not that.
He's sick of the Giants.
Somebody else will need him.
Beatty wants to play LT and he wants to start, he thinks he'll find that somewhere.
Beatty has had interest from other teams (LA and DEN) and turned down the tryouts because he wasn't 100% recovered, but both have filled their vacancies since so it will be interesting to see where he winds up.
and I'm not a 100% believer in the "Giants don't want Beatty" mantra. They didn't want to pay him, I believe that.
but the Giants also separated ways with Aaron Ross, Hakeem Nicks, Brandon Jacobs, Barry Cofield, Craig Dahl, and probably others, that eventually also returned.
so while it's unlikely Beatty ever wears a Giants uniform again, I wouldn't use the superlatives some people do.
Both sides benefit more from a fresh start, it's simply not going to happen.
"Free agency is a piece of it, it’s a part of it. You can’t hang your hat on free agency. We added some nice pieces, we added some young players in free agency who can come in and make an impact for us, but we have to indoctrinate them into the program. We’re excited about the guys we added that way, but there’s no replacement for the draft."
I get the idea the priority is the draft right now. You had/have some OTs who they probably consider, safety, and Powers at CB, but I get the sense if a spot is a potential target in the draft they don't want to close it out in FA. In other words, they would not want a scenario where they made a deal for Davis, lets say, only to have one of the tackles starring right at them in the 10 spot. I have a feeling that is part of the holdup with Powers as well with a guy like Heargreaves as a real possibility.
My point is simply this: I find it difficult to believe that an offensive tackle, getting his head beat in by defensive ends, game after game, year after year can suddenly turn "soft". Or worse, "Not want to play" or whatever terms are used. Not that it cannot be true, just difficult for me to believe.
My guess is that it's something else. Maybe money. Maybe he said something or did something. Or, maybe his coach said something or did something. Bad feelings can fester and build into untenable situations.
It would be sad if we missed out on an elite player in the draft because of some He Said - She Said storyline. I admit to being skeptical of certain stories and Will Beatty turning "soft" or "Not wanting to play football" is right up there.
At the time, we really had no other option (other than the franchise tag, around $10 million) than to sign Beatty to a long-term deal. But it was hardly "a bazillion" dollars. It was a very reasonable contract for a starting left tackle.
John Jerry told him. You know, pillow talk.
He said the Giants FO was split on Beatty from the time they gave him his big extension. Some didn't want to extend him, others felt they had no choice. It was one of the biggest personnel battles he was involved with or party to from what my friend says.
But Coughlin was not one of the ones anti-Beatty from what I've been told.
this link from BBV shows some of Beatty's best moments in 2014. If Flowers plays anything close to this we'll be fortunate.
Beatty key to offense resurgence - ( New Window )
As for his money, I remember everybody here on BBI bitching and moaning about how much he got.
pjacs & Über nailed it.
Beatty could be welcomed back. He is a good player. Nothing to this "soft" talk when a guy breaks his leg running to crush someone at the second level. Give me a break. The Giants want to upgrade every position every chance they get. They will see how the draft unfolds and if we don't draft a T in the 1st two rounds we should be trying to acquire RT-Anthony Davis from the 49ers for a future late round pick. If that falls through I'd expect them to contact Beatty.

Its soft within the context of the NFL. He's always injured and rarely playes banged up. Its always something and its hard being confident in him playing close to a full season. I think its a very reasonable concern.

What ankle? He broke his leg at the end of 2013. And had no choice for his treatment.
he tore his pec in 2015 OTAs and had no choice.
he tore his rotator cuff while recovering from the torn pec and that's where some say he had a choice. I'm not going to be a knight of the keyboard and call someone a pussy for not playing OL through a torn rotator cuff. I'll leave that to the toughest among you.
He also in between all the injuries played 16 games a season for three consecutive years. So, it's not like he's begging off for minor aches and bruises IMO.

The Giants want no part of Beatty. Beatty would never be welcomed back. You are delusional.
they have 5M in dead space, but they saved 4+M on the cap. If they were to sign him (and for the record I do think it's unlikely) if they sign him for $1M vet min or even $2M 1 year deal it still saved them $2-3M on the cap. Dead money is dead no matter what, since it represents guaranteed $$.
Quote:
and now any dollars for resigning him would basically be added to that $5 million against the cap. The Giants would look really foolish by resigning them b/c the cost would have been less had they offered or negotiated a pay cut. (and maybe they did?)

stop, there is no "if". the Giants have no plans of even entertaining the notion of signing Beatty. He is a thing of the past.
Move on, people.

A pay cut would still have saved more. Assume he would have accepted a pay cut of $4 million. Then he would only cost $5 million. By cutting him and resigning the dollars are more.
Regardless, I don't see him signing for Jerry money.
Signing him to that extension was a big mistake. Everyone in the FO knows it now.
I am so sick of hearing your self importance and definitive comments on so many topics. Why don't you "Stop It" and go somewhere else.
For starters your handle is, if I read it correctly, to eliminate or fire our brand new head coach before the season even starts. Just brilliant.
Hopefully, you are an eighth grader and getting your kicks here. If older than that, I'd suggest getting some medical help.

Um, what the hell are you talking about? This right here just shows your level of intelligence. 'nuff said.
Conklin is a sure thing. There are no holes in his game.
Anthony Davis can be a liability in pass-protection. And his passion for football needs to be questioned as well.

I'd like to know when you polled everyone in the FO?
Regardless, what revisionist bullshit. At the time, the Giants had no better option at LT than to come to terms with Beatty, who was coming off a pretty good season. They weren't going to tag him, and they weren't going to find his replacement in free agency or the draft. They signed him to a reasonable contract for a starting left tackle and drove on.
By the way, if you think Beatty was inconsistent, you were not watching the games. When he played, except for 1 year, he played well . He was a good, not great but good, LT. And he was payed like a good LT. To his credit, after the bad year, he manned up & accepted the blame and improved.
Yes, that's what Reese has been doing...ignoring defense in the draft. Except that since he's been the GM, he's drafted 33 defensive players and 30 offensive players. 10 and 10 in the last three years.
4 on D, 5 on O.
In the last three years, 3 on O, Pugh, Beckham, and Flowers, but you could make the case that Reese has used the first round to upgrade the O-Line in recent years because he didn't do that - for whatever reasons - for far too long. Prior to 2013, the last time he used a premium pick on an O-Lineman was 2009 - Will Beatty, 2nd round, #60 overall.
Were they angry because he wouldn't play RT, instead of LT, if he was asked to do so.....
From Beatty's perspective, did he feel if he played with the rotator problem, he would injure himself and not be able to play next season?
As far as the front office arguing if he was overpaid, that is on Reese......Reese backs himself into corners.....he did it with Rolle, Beatty, Baas, Beason.....he had no replacements, he doesn't draft players to take over, and then he is forced to fill a need and has to overpay.....
We don't even know if Reese approached Beatty about a pay cut....Beatty is smart...he knew he was not going to get his current pay on the open market, as a free agent......so if Reese made an offer, how much lower was it than Beatty's expectations? Or did Beatty overvalue himself, and may find himself accepting much less out there?
Of course this is all speculation, as to whether Reese had this discussion with Beatty....like I said, we will never know what did/did not transpire between the two of them....
Can you point me towards the Magic Trade Tree? Is it planted next to the Magic Trade Down Tree?
The offense was okay last year, except for the fact that they couldn't run the ball when they had to, and they were close to the bottom of the league in time-of-possession. Seemed to me that they racked up a lot of yards and a lot of points in a lot of losing efforts.
